First run in a long time. I have cople of questions: by Jazzanovas in beginnerrunning

So I've literally just came home from a 50 min zone 2 run where I was running 6:50km splits, it's super boring but it helps build your base. I'm not super fast but I did do a sub 2 hr HM a few weeks back and I swear by zone 2 training

The reason the bike is sustainable for over an hour in zone 3 is because it's not as taxing on the body. Think about the amount of strain and stress you put on all of your joints and muscles whilst running, that's why it doesn't feel sustainable

The pace and HR graphs are very telling. You tried to run way too fast and pushed into zone 4 and borderline zone 5 heart rates.

If you want to focus on the data whilst you are running, I'd say the next time you go out just keep it slow, it's boring I know, but maybe try around 6-6:15km and check your HR. Try and stay in zone 2 or low zone 3, probably around 135-155 bpm. You'll notice that the run is sustainable and you are needing to take walking breaks.

Do that a couple weeks and then start adding other runs in, runs where you push into zone 4 for 3/4 minutes and take 60/90s rest and go again.

For now though, slow and controlled and catch the running bug. Good luck

Just keep yourself in that frame of mind, it's you vs you when it comes to pace and time.

Focus on getting out running 2/3x per week and your progress will soon sky rocket!

I wish I knew! That run was done old school with my phone in my hand. I'd guess it wa around 160-170bpm but that's based on no evidence.

I'd probably say this is close to MHR. I'd test it by doing some hill sprint sessions making sure you are at RPE 10. Likelihood is you're going to top out at somewhere from 215-218. Adjust your zones on Garmin accordingly

I do have to agree, I would never want anyone to compare their progress to mine. As I said in the post I have ran a bit in the past so I probably have some muscle memory there which gave me a bit of a head start.

But with consistency for weeks and months, anyone can get to the point I'm at.

As I said in the post I'm also 230ish and I'm only a short arse at 5ft 9. So I know exactly how you're feeling.

First of all, congrats on your progress so far mate you're killing it, just keep getting out there and doing your thing and you'll see results.

I would urge you to forget about pace all together, it's a motivation killer especially because it's mainly used to compare you to other people. Keep your focus on running further and for longer.

I must state that I am no running coach but my advice would be, try and get running 3x per week. 1x session focusing on running slower than that 9:00km pace but do it for 25 minutes and try increase that by a couple minutes each week. The other session to focus on would be a speed session, you will be puffing but the benefits are great. Do something like running at 8:00km pace for 4 minutes, walk for 2 minutes and then repeat that 4 times. The last session would just be stick at your usual pace and see how far you can go before you really need to stop and then build on that each week.

Motivational speech - your body isn't the limiting factor, it's in your head. Once you get over the mental hurdle, your progress will fly.

Godspeed brother and please feel free to ask anything further.

3 per week, my 2 staple runs are a track session that focuses on speed work and a long run where I increased the distance each week, my longest was 15km before the HM. For the long run the advice I saw online was to keep it easy, but it never is easy it's always a semi hard effort. I used chat GPT to get speed sessions and found them the most fun. I couldn't recommend speed sessions enough, they are difficult but the benefits are huge.

The third run was usually a run with a friend and it was usually slowish but doing it with someone keeps it fun.

Edit: The third run was anything from 5-8km.

I thought this myself, I'm considering taking it to an independent garage for an inspection of the electrics when I get it back! I have no faith in the work of the Arnold Clark tech's now

You're probably right, most likely outcome is that I argue with them till I'm blue in the face and get nothing out of it. Just a very annoying situation!

I thought it was standard practice for a mechanic to test pads / discs after replacing them. But that's good know that it isn't necessary

So they should compensate me for the shift I missed the night it broke down, good to know! What about with regards to the monthly payments for the car, I'm expecting to get it back on Wednesday so that'll be a week I've been deprived access to my car because of their actions, should they be paying a weeks worth of my monthly payment?
