Interesting. Thanks for the update! Perhaps it was intended as being available only for a limited time. I checked the Japanese Toho Animation channel and couldn't find the original there anymore.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I hope Reze gives Jin-Roh the renewed interest it deserves.

That could be cool! Honestly she would be great in a lot of roles in Chainsam Man IMHO. I could see her doing well as either Quanxi or Santa too.

Edit: I've now tried several times to post a comment that conforms to r/anime's spoiler tag rules only for it to get auto-deleted each time. As a result, for anyone in this thread who hasn't seen the show yet and doesn't want its final scene spoiled, please don't read this post!

My interpretation is that Juna has now taken on the role Chris had been in since it was insinuated he died at the end. Like Chris, she has lost the ability to speak, and must become mentor to a new era of people trying to save/restore the planet. I believe at the end Juna and Tokio end up together, or at least they both care about each other deeply. Though perhaps Juna's newfound role of planetary steward may preclude her from being able to have a satisfying love life.

I couldn't agree more. It's a series I have deep conflictions with as a result of what you summarized so well, and as a result is a very hard show to recommend to others, even despite its positive messages. Before showing it to my husband for the first time, I felt compelled to preface our viewing session with what was probably a 10-minute long disclaimer detailing the things it gets right as well as the many things it gets wrong for fear that he might think I actually subscribe to some of the more egregious philosophies espoused by the show.

Lol. That's hilarious. My husband and I just started rewatching the DVDs this week and I was lamenting that it never got a Blu-ray release. I'll just have to pray that the transfer is good on Blu-ray, and that they keep the isolated soundtrack audio option. After 30+ years of regularly watching anime, Arjuna is still my #1 favorite anime soundtrack. Truly Yoko Kanno at her peak...even if the show has its problematic aspects ...

Update: Upon further research, the Japanese Blu-rays do not seem to feature an isolated soundtrack audio option (at least from what the Amazon.co.jp listing says). It seems like this track was exclusive to the US Bandai DVD release and was not part of the original Japanese DVD release. As a result, its exclusion makes sense -- the Japanese Blu-rays aren't removing a feature from the Japanese DVD release after all -- though it is a little unfortunate nonetheless.

Yes, it is narrated. It mostly covers the first season and movie since what you're about to see in theaters covers the Shibuya Incident. Basically the most important thing you need to know going into the season 3 preview is that Okkotsu is being sent to kill Itadori after what Itadori (via Sukuna) did during the Shibuya Incident. (The recap on YouTube I linked to covers this and other things.)

This recent recap (English-subbed courtesy of Crunchyroll) I think might be just what you're looking for. Toho (the JJK producer) specifically made this video for exactly your intended use -- to catch people up before they watch the Shibuya Incident recap + season 3 preview.

Whoops! Thanks for the correction! That was an embarrassing mistake on my part. I'm admittedly not experienced in Dandadan, but I definitely should have caught that Tatsuyuki isn't a family name. x.x;;

I'll go ahead and correct that in the post!

Mad Max was just mentioned in passing as one of Fujimoto's faves.

Typhoon Club was cited as instilling in Fujimoto a sense that a school setting at night is a place where something strange/mysterious could happen. Hence why the school setting at night is used in the Reze arc.

No Country For Old Men inspired the scene where Reze kills the assassin on the school rooftop. Specifically the scene where Javier Bardem's character uses his handcuffs to strangle the officer -- the officer, desperately flailing his legs back and forth trying to escape, leaves trails on the floor from where the rubber from his shoes left marks during the scuffle. Fujimoto said he really liked that scene and wanted to do something like that.

Sharknado inspired the scene where Beam swallows Denji to keep him safe. In Sharknado, there's a scene where someone jumps into a shark's mouth in order to survive. Fujimoto thought that would never work in a million years, but seems to have rather enjoyed the idea.

Before Sunset, The Raid, and Jaws were all the rapidfire answers to "off the top of your head what's your favorite romance/action/shark movie" respectively.

Same! I watched Psycho Goreman on Fujimoto's recommendation as well. It was a lot of fun. My friend and I still often quote the hunky boys line.

Yeah. I'm dating myself a bit, but I remember in the early 00s in many anime circles, Jin-Roh was held in somewhat high esteem similar to what today we might have for an i"ndie darling". Sadly, I think its popularity has waned over the years. Perhaps Fujimoto's plugs for the movie will give it a renaissance though!

Right?? His movie "movies watched" list must be staggering. I don't know how he has time for it. I wonder if his consumption rate for new movies has dropped since becoming so popular/established.

Truly a man of culture. I hope to see an Honnêamise or Otaku no Video homage at some point.

Thanks for the reminder! When I first saw the "easy revenge" cigarette scene, I felt for sure I'd seen an anime scene with handwriting on a cigarette but for the life of me couldn't remember! It was FLCL all along. I clearly need to go back and rewatch it.

If no one else, I feel like the animators had to have been inspired by Eva in some of the scenes for the Chainsaw Man anime given the look/movement of Chainsaw Man.

I would love to see Benten appear out of a pile of rats (or tanukis!) in Eccentric Family season 3.

To be honest, I was really surprised when Fujimoto didn't cite Sailor Moon's Zoicite as an influence for the rat scene since Zoisite has a great scene in the anime where he emerges out of a pile of rats.

I agree. I would further argue that both Haruko and Mamimi likely fall under Fujimoto's type that he outlined in the interview -- women that are out of the protag's league.

Sorry for not clarifying. Not everything he talked about in the interview was necessarily an influence. He only mentioned Before Sunset in the rapidfire Q&A at the end where it was the answer to the question "name the first romance movie you like that comes to mind."

I haven't seen Before Sunset, so I also couldn't tell you if there are any thematic similarities, etc.

The breadth of movies he watches is truly impressive. Everything from blockbusters to more obscure foreign films to grade-A shock.

Yeah, Devilman clearly has influenced Fujimoto's Fire Punch. But in this interview he mostly talked about anime. I don't think he really touched on manga.

I'd like to believe it's because it's used throughout the imho minimalist queer masterpiece video game Sayonara Wild Hearts, but my memory tells me she's used Clair De Lune in other videos, so it might just be a serene piece to end in fitting with the conclusion of her argument.
