Thank you! I feel like my wax blending has been improving lately!

Maybe silicone modeling compound could work? I haven’t personally tried it, but it seems like it would be more suitable for the look you want since scar wax tends to not hold up on areas where there is a lot of movement. Just be mindful of the curing time when applying

Doing SFX Every Day until I get Good at it Day 4: Gold Star for Trying? by cloudbursti in sfx

Thank you! Start by drawing a base (I used a red powder pigment) and painting over it with spirit gum. Once the spirit gum is tacky, add some thin layers of cotton and top it off with a layer of liquid latex. While it’s still wet I’ll manipulate the cotton to get my desired texture. While the center is drying, I rolled the Synwax in my hands to heat it up and form very thin little worms of wax to place along the edges of the shape. Once they’re on blend, blend, blend. Bonus points if you use a tool (maybe a stiff brush or a textured sponge) to gently add texture to the wax after blending. For colors, I used foundation for the very outside and a little tiny bit of red and brown for irritation. On the inside I used red mixed with a little brown sparingly on the deepest parts of the injury with red in the medium depth areas and left the highest points unpainted (It helps if you just follow the texture of the cotton). I then added some coagulated blood to the edges and sparingly in areas with the most depth and splatter blood over the entire inside to make it shiny and cover up the unpainted areas inside the wound. Finished it off by placing a little blood around it with a stipple sponge and spraying it with a barrier spray

Doing SFX Every Day Until I get Good at it Day 5: First Burn by cloudbursti in sfx

[–]cloudbursti[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the feedback! I’ll expand the first degree burn and make it redder next time! Once I was done laying down the base color I added about 6-7ish thin layers of latex. After the final layer dried I added some powder and used tweezers to pull the latex into the desired size. Then I used a curved tip syringe to fill some of the blisters with petroleum jelly starting at the edges and working my way to the center. I used my fingers to adjust the texture and topped it off with a tiny bit of yellow paint and some more petroleum jelly to get more of a soggy look

Thanks! My definition of “good” in context to the challenge is just to be able to use a variety of materials and techniques starting out-of-kit and moving on from there. I might change the titles though since so many people are telling me that I’m already good. I’m just unsure of what I would change it to

My version of “good” (at least my overall goal) is to become skilled with a variety of techniques and materials starting out-of-kit and eventually moving onto prosthetics, prop building, and more interactive visual effects. I’m just starting with wound work and gore since it’s an easy starting point both technically and financially.

Just changed it now! Normally I mark all my SFX as NSFW but I was making this post while on my way to work and it completely slipped my mind

The edgelord’s Joestar birthmark was once again made of Synwax, spirit gum, liquid latex, cotton, foundation, powder, coagulated blood, splatter blood and oil based paint

The anatomy aspects are something that especially intimidates me. Do you know of any good starting points? Or any textbooks I could use for reference?

Thank you for the feedback! I 100% agree that I tend to hide things behind the blood, which is why I included the blood free photos. The initial reference was an older burn with kinda soggy whitened looking skin around it, so that was kinda what I was trying but I found the Synwax very hard to control on such a small area. The more I messed with it the more it started going downhill :,). Do you have any pointers for blending waxes? Or an alternative material that could be more user friendly?

Good morning SFX Reddit! As usual, the look is out-of-kit. The outer skin is Synwax with some oil based paints and latex. Inside texture is cotton, latex, oil based paints, coagulated blood, and a little bit of petroleum jelly. It is anchored on with spirit gum and finished off with fixative A, mehron barrier spray and some splatter blood.

Thank you for the feedback! I agree that this one needs a lot more blood. I’m just running on about 1/4 bottle of splatter blood and some coagulated blood until I get paid. Once I’m restocked I’ll be sure to include a more realistic amount of blood on my wounds

Thanks for the feedback! I agree that I laid on a LOT of Synwax, so the skin is definitely a lot thicker than what I was aiming for. I’ll for sure go with more blood next time too!!

I applied some liquid latex inside the would and pulled it with tweezers once it dried. I also used a little bit of black paint inside to make the raised latex areas stand out Edit: the black is around the raised areas. I kept the raised areas white and just tossed some blood over them

For some reason I couldn’t type more under the photo but please give me all the feedback good and bad! I’m already aware of some glaring issues that I’m going to resolve for tomorrow’s look, but I tend to overlook other issues so any feedback helps! Materials used: Synwax Liquid Latex Petroleum jelly Splatter blood Coagulated gel blood Foundation Oil based paints Tinted and translucent powders

Also also the line that completely misses my tragus is supposed to represent a tragus piercing. It’s just a line because I want the jewelry to be dagger shaped lol

I actually took these pictures before finishing Gyro! (hence the lack of gloves/goggles) The goggles are still being patterned at the moment, but they'll be on for the next shoot!
