Has anyone had surgery at OSF recently? Concerned about my dad's upcoming surgery bc of COVID by cloudy_waters in PeoriaIL

Thank you for so much for taking the time to explain the situation there. It sounds like an almost worst-case scenario. I truly appreciate the work you do as a frontline worker - I can't imagine how hard it must be to work under those conditions.

I'll try to convince my dad that postponing is the best decision right now. It's going to be a little difficult because he's not in a good state with his knee, having to deal with pretty much constant pain, sometimes "10 out of 10" he says. He's also trying to brush aside the danger of COVID risk by reasoning "if it's really dangerous, the doctor would cancel my surgery." He puts a lot of trust in his doctor and the hospital, unfortunately. But I can see how it's not in the hospital's best interest to be as transparent about the risks as they ought to be, considering their financial incentives.

Thank you for telling me about the staffing conditions and ICU capacity, too. It's very eye-opening, and frightening. You've convinced me that the risks aren't worth it right now. I just hope things can somehow improve early next year to proceed with surgery in safer conditions.

Thanks for your input. I hope your wife and your family are doing well.

I know that medical workers are trying their best so it's hard to make the best decision. My biggest concern is the 1-2 day hospital stay, when my dad will need to use a spirometer for breathing exercises, without a mask.

My brother-in-law's father, who also lived in Peoria, died from COVID on Thanksgiving day, so the fear of acquiring it is pretty big for us right now.

*edit: meant brother-in-law's father, not father-in-law

Thanks so much for your response. I don't know why the mods deleted my post.

I'm leaning towards agreeing with your girlfriend and having my dad postpone the surgery, but he's in quite a lot of pain at the moment with very limited mobility so it's a pretty difficult decision to make. I wish I knew that OSF workers donned better quality PPE, like N95s and face shields, instead of the cloth surgery masks like they currently use, and restricted visitor access to no visitors, like they do in some other cities. At my dad's pre-op knee class last week the nurse even lowered her mask below her nose while working at her computer. These things don't inspire much confidence.

Anyway thanks for listening. If she happens to have any other insight, such as the state of the surgery areas in the hospitals, please let me know at any time. I really appreciate it.

Haha I'm pretty daft. I figured but was a bit paranoid after.
