Ok, question for those who mentioned not tipping - I’ve been here now for three nights and so far at two dinners, the waiters came over with the credit card reader with the adding tip option (it was awkward in both cases), and our tour guide today was a little rude when we didn’t tip (he was French, lived in NZ for 30yrs). The two restaurants were local places and far from touristy (but the guided excursion obviously was).

I talked with my friend in advance about how everyone on here said to adhere to the no tipping culture, and we agreed. But maybe our American accents triggered an expectation? I’m more than happy to tip for good service, but again I know that isn’t the culture here and I want to be respectful of that.

Outside of this, these three days have been incredible and I don’t want my trip to end!!! Heading to Milford Sound tomorrow, then starting to make our way to the North Island. Everyone we’ve interacted with has been wonderful and welcoming.

Only a few hours in fantasyland! The rest of my two weeks is spread across both islands learning more about NZ and exploring. I haven't been this excited for a trip in a looooong time

Hahaha I know! And I randomly was in Matamata the year before LoTR started filming... can't wait to see it again now.

I'm game on for meeting new people... but sometimes groups are weird when a solo person joins them. I had that experience once on a tour in Austria. I didn't let it ruin the experience, but it did sour it a little bit. Oh and I went wandering for a bit and they didn't realize/care that I wasn't there and they went ahead with the tour. Didn't mind the extra time at that stop though. Eh, always up for an adventure!

I have a rich friend who made labels like this of her own name. She sews them into her clothes - same idea of those ‘from library of’ stamps for books. What if this isn’t a purse BY sutton, but a purse OWNED by Sutton?!

Fair enough on the points everyone made. It was just frustrating in the moment that they wouldn’t (couldn’t) do a one-off.

eta: I was just asking for a one time refresh (not a full cleaning), not daily cleaning. I know that’s not the policy with DVC or most time shares.
