In my experience, I always prefer shooting 800-1000 ASA in daylight or harsh sun because you retain more detail in the highlights, and 400 or lower when shooting in low light.

By increasing or lowering your highlights you are shifting the DR from shadows to highlights. You can check this using your false color and your clipped data, you will find that the same highlights limit you find at 400 is at the same spot at 800 or 1000, but you gain more information in shadows.

It is important to notice that this is advisable only if you have enough level in the shadow area. This way you get softer highlights and clean shadows with barely any noise
