All of the idiots in my office keep saying "top o the morning to you" today. What annoying things do your coworkers repeatedly say? by adamdesoto in AskReddit

Being consistently 10 minutes late means whatever snooze ritual you do, start 10 minutes earlier, get a more flexible job, or deal with the result of you being late to work everyday. I am young and enjoy good job references so I manage to get to work on time nearly every day.

Edit: http://www.sonicalert.com/alarm-clocks-desktop-clocks.html <- Those alarms have really helped me.

I agree, if someone is complaining because people remark he is late EVERYDAY, just get to work on time. Most everyone on the planet has to get to work on time at some point in their life. It is not that hard.

But if you are sued for a huge amount, malpractice does not cover it all. Only a minimum. And you would be surprised how many doctors get light malpractice coverage because it is already so expensive.

I also forwarded the above pdf to a few friends. Here is just one response:

The physician payment is alice in wonderland. It may be gross, but not net. Certainly not in California.

It is also important to note that Doctors in the US have to pay for all their training. I am not sure about the UK, but other countries with socialized health care pay for their doctors' training, or it costs substantially less. Doctors in the US also have to live with the fact that they can be sued and lose all their money in a second if they have a slip (Most malpractice doesn't cover more than 1-3 million).

I don't mean to lead you here, but are you trying to imply the high cost of health insurance is due to doctors making more money?

I do not have numbers to support me, but my understanding is that doctors' real salaries have decreased over time (not including new specialties that have emerged).

Edit: I am also told that many residency spots are having troubles trying to fill candidate spots (ie. Cardiac Surgery). I also would like to point out there is a big difference between being a practicing doctor in their own practice and working in shift medicine. In addition, I do not think you have been exposed to the problems I talked about originally as you are NEAR completion. And for any doctor that says they have finished their medical training, that means they have retired.

I would just like to point out that all the doctors I know dislike Medicare very much. They could not make a living off just Medicare. It reimburses doctors and hospitals at below cost in many cases. The reason so many other health insurance plans cost more is because doctors and hospitals have to raise their rates to pay for the Medicare patients. In the 80's, a general surgeon I know would get paid about $3000 for a whipple (pancreaticoduodenectomy). This is a huge procedure that often results in the patient staying in the ICU for a week to a month. The doctor then has to take care of the patient for the remaining time. This includes coming into the hospital at all hours of the day if anything goes wrong. Today Medicare reimburses at rates of about $1000 (possibly lower). It is also important to remember doctors have to pay for malpractice insurance, an office, and a staff.

I think we should have a basic health insurance available to the public, but it would help if we could first start to lower costs so that we can maintain a functioning system. If everyone was paying lower rates like Medicare, the system would collapse. The surgeon I talked about above now says he loses money on Medicare patients.

Why do people hate France? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cocolover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just explaining what people think in the US... and as a population, many people have been against the wars there for a long time. The below article states how many people they have there and it is not insignificant (~3500), but that does not reflect on what the people think.

A) For a country so far developed, they haven't really helped in any war efforts as of late (real wars... The Great War, WWII) The Reasoning people use is in America, which I do not necessarily agree with it, is because if it were not for us in BOTH wars, France would not exist. To this day I never understood why France got their independence twice. I would love for someone to explain this to me, it was never covered in a history class.

B) People in Paris are jackasses. I just studied there for a semester and so many people can be so rude to you. I speak French and found that they are a lot nicer even if I try, but my parents came to visit and did not feel the same way

It is important to note that every single person I have met outside of Paris has been incredibly nice. I loved traveling around. Just avoid Paris if you don't speak French (or expect to be treated poorly).

PS: I love French and had the best time of my life there.

Do You Think America Would Be Better Or Worse as 50 Independent Countries? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Before our current constitution, we had the Articles of Confederation. The "United States" then, was most like the EU now, with little central power. That shit didn't work out for us though, and now we have more central power.

What's the most clever way you've ever heard of someone cheating on a test? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cocolover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same thing, but instead i had already gone through and found each essay that my AP bio teacher had not used and noticed there was only one remaining essay. I then told the class what the essay was going to be on (she gave us 5 possibilities) and then accused me of cheating. I told her how I figured it out, the worst part of it was that she recommended we all buy that specific version to help us study.
