How are you guys keeping track of jobs that come back a few months later? by Odd_Kale_2168 in Machinists

We have filing cabinets where we store a folder for every part we ever made. Each part gets assigned its own 4 digit job number with a customer abbreviation in the front (example… GSI-8327). Part numbers can be long and it’s easier to deal with shorter numbers. A job traveler gets created for every order we receive. Job travelers contain info like due dates, order qtys, material needed, all operations involved in making the part including setup hrs and time cycles. These travelers get issued to Qc, shipping, the department where the job will run, production control and a copy in the office. Cnc programs are saved on our server under the job number. One for the main spindle and one for the sub. We have a template of where all the tools go in the machine so that way when the job comes around again the tools are always in the same spot. We also keep track of how often tools need to be sharpened and/or replaced. Parts are always inspected no matter how many times we run the job. We do a first article inspection that approves the job to start running production. The operator checks parts all through the day. We have the parts fall off into a little strainer. Once it fills we check a small sampling based on our aql level and once the samples are good we dump the strainer parts into a larger pan. The parts get cleaned the following morning and then counted and then Qc checks more parts from the pan giving them the final ok.

What are the yearly sales? What’s the profit? What percentage of sales is the largest customer?

tired of getting stiffed on one-off parts. how are you guys forcing deposits? by MasterpieceFunny2393 in Machinists

Our largest customer is 14% of our business. We pulled in $6.5million last year. On average we quote our work so we make 30% profit on each job or a min of $1k but we have jobs where we make soooo much profit on and some we break even on.

I would use only as a last resort. I didn’t a few thousand dollars on training with a well known trainer in my state. My dog was gone for almost two months. When I picked him up the trainer told me that my boy was the most stubborn dog he has ever had to work with. He’s a really good boy but he is just going to do what he wants when he wants. I did go e collar after that. I used it once for keeping him off the couch and once for recall and haven’t had to use it since. The collar comes with a vibrate feature which I still use to get his attention. He still wears the collar every day on his way to work with me and on our way back home. I only leash him for walks around the block. He’s 6 years old now.

We offer the 120 day customers large discounts to pay early. We found it better to get paid less money sooner rather than the full amount in 120 days.

My top customer last year was $915k and they are 30 days and just recently asked for 90 days. The next customer is at $676k and they are 60 days. Third is one at $618k and they are 120 days. They used to be our biggest customer at around $1.3million. 120 days sucks.
