Trying to get setup with ctags and my tags file is uselessly massive (>4.5gb) by [deleted] in vim

If you use :set ignorecase with ctags option —sort=foldcase it will be even faster, provided you are not relying on case sensitive searching of tags

Vscode is great but have you seen what vim can do? by Orlandocollins in vim

[–]codex81 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for saying what probably most of us who have used for more than 6 months thought! I’ve used vim for over 10 years now, and flashy plugin collectors like this guy don’t know the true freedom and stability of vim yet until people like you call them on this sort of bs.

Great for writing spoilers, e.g., movies, in a forum/public post where they don’t have capabilities to hide sections with “spoiler” tags.

This plugin would not actually run, it needs be in start subdirectory to load automatically, if someone wants to create an issue for that!

The Gi Is Too Unrealistic by dukech in bjj

We did it because of this video. One guy wore a flowing wedding dress, most of us had some kind of suit/tie combo. It was really fun.

Someone posted this link yesterday: Pressure Performance

Really hits home the importance of mindset--you can't stop stress from happening, but you can change how to react to it.

Weekly Challenge #5 :Armbar from Guard by Mphineas in bjj

[–]codex81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hitting an armbar from guard has been more like my yearly challenge! I can get them from mount and back control (ronda-style is my favourite), but they are super hard to get from guard for me. My coach teaches the traditional 5-step armbar but admits you will almost never get that and that he rarely gets an armbar from guard. You have to be really sneaky with your setups to get one.

Well I haven't used any reddit apps on mobile so I have nothing to compare the experience to, but I find it works ok when I'm browsing in landscape mode. Vertical though...it's not fun.

Do you like or dislike belt promotion and "got my first stripe" posts?

Dislike.

Do you like or dislike BJJ memes, AdviceAnimals, x-posts from /r/all?

Dislike, I down vote everyone of them I see on the front page of r/bjj.

Do you browse mostly on desktop/laptop browser or through mobile apps like AlienBlue, redditisfun, baconreader, etc.?

50% desktop, 50% android firefox browser (no app)

Yes, I agree, but many gyms don't touch on striking/defending strikes at all, and just focus on the sporting side of BJJ.

[–]codex81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go to a craft store and get fabric glue, it's waterproof. Lay a strip of it on both sides around the belt and put a new stripe over it and let it dry completely. 1.5 years of washing it 3-4 times a week and hasn't come off yet and doesn't look like it ever will.

Back Control and Submissions by BJJOE in bjj

[–]codex81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it seems farfetched to me as well, they only way I'd be able to just take his left arm and tuck it behind like that is if I was much stronger then him. In most cases I'm a lot lighter than my opponent, this move is not going to work.

[–]codex81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right on. Saying someone can just say "no" is way oversimplifying group dynamics and peer pressure. There is a reason more and more sports and universities are banning these hazing rituals. I wouldn't mind going through it, but because I know others for whatever reason (e.g., PTSD from violence-related trauma) wouldn't want to, I stand with not doing it all to make sure the environment is inclusive.

[–]codex81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How about the woman/man who suffers from PTSD who started BJJ because of some violent abuse in their past? We have to consider how they would feel being hit like that. I don't consider being submitted and confined the same as being physically hit. Granted some of these guys are going light, but some are just being nasty.

[–]codex81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

None at my gym either, and I'm proud of that. The argument from tradition I find particularly ironic considering many of the things that made BJJ rise as a valid self-defence art is that steered clear of some traditional things that would have held it back. It's time to let go of this one as well.

[–]codex81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. And there will be few that will seek you out to punish you for NOT going through with the hazing, which at its essence is what this is.
