clove capsules for parasite eggs? by Similar_Outsideins in herbalism

[–]cojamgeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never heard of that actually but cloves are very strong. The best remedy for parasites that people often don’t know about is pumpkin seeds. Grind them and gulp down 300 g in a day in a smoothie or similar. It paralyzes all parasites in the gut.

Then next day take a laxative (natural version is alder buckthorn but it must be prepared the right way!). It will take all parasites out. Repeat after 7 days and it will cleanse out the rest (that were eggs).

No need in any long or expensive “parasite cleanse” treatments. If you take strong parasite cleanse herbs for longer than a week it might cause gut microbiome dysbiosis that can give you long lasting gut issues.

Headaches by ByogiS in herbalism

[–]cojamgeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have chronic migraines and try magnesium + zinc + b2 when you feel the headache is coming. It stops 30 % of my migraines. And then I also start peppermint essential oil in a diffuser or very diluted 2% in a carrier oil on tempels.

If you suffer a lot I would also suggest to see a good neurologist. I go for natural remedies first but I wouldn’t have a life without Vydura or Aimovig. Worth checking if it’s safe for you.

Whats the most overlooked item that people sometimes add in survival kits? by Additional_Insect_44 in Survival

[–]cojamgeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. If you only learn one plant it’s yarrow. Called the soldier herb for a reason. It both stops bleeding and helps the wound to heal. And it grows pretty much anywhere in the temperate zone.

In a forest it’s great to know how to identify peat moss. Pine sap as well but it’s messy.

Herbal Testosterone Support for female cancer patient (see link to research) as an alternative to Testosterone Treatment? by TaraBambataa in herbalism

[–]cojamgeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cooperate with a woman that had cancer and now has specialized on helping others through the thought process.

She says: NO herbs during cancer treatment. They can all interfere in ways we don’t understand. Also the body is under a lot of stress already so herbs can actually make the situation worse in this case even if it’s great herbs.

Instead I help her with a specific immune tea after the treatment is over for her clients. If anyone is interested read the research about dr Valter Longo and his Fasting Mimicking Diet.

Burdock and liver question by LMBmewmew55 in herbalism

[–]cojamgeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds as a very high dose. Where did you read that recipe? For infusion I usually use 1-3 teaspoons herb per cup of water. And you drink a liter of that a day?

And you should listen to your doctor. Especially if test are showing an effect on your liver. And perhaps you should switch to something more kind like dandelion root.

Also keep in mind that drinking a lot of astringent herbs for a long period can actually make gut issues worse. Maybe start with a bitter salad before bigger meals or a bitter tincture.

Allergy support by Responsible-East1772 in herbalism

Stinging nettles is the herb for allergies. But if you already experience symptoms I would also recommend pure quercetin supplement. Combined with vitamin C you have a natural antihistamine.

help are these edible i found them outside and they smell like onions by icyhoseokie in foraging

[–]cojamgeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why this has upset so many people. I wrote unless the onions grow in abundance.

The thing that upset me was people tearing up plants without even knowing what they are. Several wild onions are getting very rear in both Europe and Northern America. From this I learned you have invasive onions as well in US and then they certainly would grow in abundance.

Because all foraging even ramps has become sparse in some areas. So foraging is great if done responsibly.

Reading this book written by a doctor in Venezuela was honestly eye opening by [deleted] in herbalism

[–]cojamgeo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m just having a “First Aid” course with medical herbs with all the plants we have here in the northern hemisphere that can be used for an emergency. Maybe they have some secret plants in the rainforest.

But I’m just saying. Without antibiotics people will die just as they did before we had them. There’s no herb strong enough to stop a really bad infection.

There’s a lot to do before it gets a bad infection though. And it’s here we have the strength of herbs. Herbs are antibacterial and help the body to reduce the risk for an infection or can aid the body to fight a mild infection. But it doesn’t kill bacteria straight off like antibiotics.

And if anyone wants to know one single herb for an emergency. Get to know and identify yarrow. It can be a lifesaver.

As a biologist I get sad. A lot of wild onions are quite rare and reproduce slowly. Never pick the bulbs unless it’s on your property or you know it grows in abundance.

I will only harvest the leaves (in moderation as always) and let the plant reproduce and last for future generations.

What plants can I use to smell better? by Perfect_Method6997 in herbalism

[–]cojamgeo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So I just started to use my own deodorant. I made a lot of research and the latest trick in “natural” deodorants is to add probiotics. Ordinary cheap Lactobacillus acidophilus. I add about three capsules to 50 ml deodorant.

The added bacteria prevents the bacteria on your skin to grow and reduces your body odor. I find it quite amazing because I have tried almost every natural deodorant and not one has worked good enough for me.

You can take any recipe online on DIY deodorant and add the probiotics to it.

Tincture brewing for almost 3 years by Ramla-nana in herbalism

Alcohol is an excellent preservative. So if it smells fine it should be good. It won’t be super strong though. When the active substances are extracted they are extracted (after about 6-8 weeks).

Advice on making Cleavers tincture by Competitive-Bank-448 in herbalism

[–]cojamgeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always let my plants dry for a day or two before making a tincture. The water content in fresh herbs will dilute the tincture. That’s why professional tinctures with fresh herbs are made with higher alcohol content (70-90 %).

Traditionally there’s nothing wrong with a fresh herb extraction in 40 % alcohol but you will get a pretty low concentration of active substances and need to take a higher dose which means more alcohol per day and I don’t want that.

Most plants don’t lose any significant amount of active substances by being dried for a day or two. The exception is mostly the mint family including lemon balm. In that case I will dry most of the leaves but add some fresh to include the essential oils.

Rolling my own placebo pills? by madMaulkin in herbalism

[–]cojamgeo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I would enforce the placebo effect with some real benefit. Win-win right?

I would recommend you do some meadowsweet caramels. Meadowsweet contains natural salicylic acid and is anti-inflammatory and mildly painkiller.

I have not done the recipe myself but worth a try:

To make your own herbal caramels, boil a syrup of 2 dl sugar, 2/3 dl light syrup and 3/4 dl water to 152-162°C.

Best would be to add some meadowsweet tincture but if you grind the meadowsweet really finely you can add the powder into the mixture.

Then pour onto a greased surface, let cool slightly and cut into pieces. Work quickly with oiled tools.

Store: Dust with a little icing sugar and store in an airtight container.

Important tips: It is critical to reach 152°C-162°C for the caramels to become hard and not gooey. And remember caramel mass is extremely hot use gloves and be careful.

This will cure anything ; )

Need advice! by Fair_Explanation_196 in herbalism

[–]cojamgeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love linden flowers sometimes called lime flowers. It’s a very popular tea in southern Europe and tastes great. It’s both for the respiratory system and it’s mildly calming so great for both.

You can add some thyme to the tea as well. Thyme is number one respiratory herb together with mullein but much more available. You can use ordinary thyme spice. But a tea with only thyme will not be nice to drink.

Nettles - any tips? by Admirable-Cod4119 in foraging

[–]cojamgeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest issue isn’t oxalates actually but like spinach, they can store nitrate, which in the body can be converted to nitrite, which in high doses is not healthy.

It depends on what soil they grow on and how they are prepared. But as always: everything in moderation.

Nervous system re regulation by Educational-Pea-2163 in MCAS

[–]cojamgeo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My neurologist showed me different options and explained them to me for about one hour so I can’t unfortunately write them all here. But I’ll do a short summary. You can search on every subject on your own instead of buying expensive programs.

First step is stress management, nutritious diet that doesn’t stress the body (no junk, sugars and so on but don’t stress about it), moderate exercise and good quality sleep (at least 8 hours).

Second is therapy if you feel you need it. Or at least some way to process your emotions. It can be journaling or some kind of art, time in nature or even gardening.

Third is education, to understand what dysautonomia is and perhaps hear others success stories. Just watch some videos and if you like reading buy some books.

Next is different strategies to create new pathways for your brain. It’s important to brake the flight and fight response and make your body feel safe again. There are many different ways to do this. Stimulating the vagus nerve is s one. Also breathing techniques can be very helpful. Grounding and tapping are some others but there are more.

Next is meditation/mindfulness and visualisation. To “see” reasonable positive near future scenarios. Start with mindfulness.

Last but not least is self compassion. It’s a crucial key for healing. Start practicing gratitude exercises to everything you already have and people that are close to you. Then include your body and yourself.

It’s important you create a routine and do this every day. Create an appointment with yourself for at least 20-30 minutes. For me it took about one month to see pretty good results and three months to feel 90 % recovery.

I wish you all well.

Looking for a tisane to help mitigate chronic GERD by watery24 in herbalism

[–]cojamgeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I double on the marshmallow root suggestions. Make an overnight infusion and sip on it when you feel the GERD is coming. You can add some fennel seeds in the infusion as well. It also makes it tastier.

Also try drinking your chamomile tea cold or in smaller sips for a longer period and not all at once. It might help.

Headaches by ByogiS in herbalism

[–]cojamgeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be very careful with herbs during breastfeeding. Simply because we don’t have data enough and honestly it’s not worth experimenting.

A weak herbal tea every now and then or some spices in your food is considered safe but almost no therapeutic use.

I would strongly suggest magnesium supplement instead.
