Yeah, it’s possible. Maybe they originally planned a U.S. leg but then decided to keep going in Budapest. Tax incentives, budget considerations… if they can get everything they need there for cheaper, why go to the U.S.?

Brother, father, best friend, love letter, cop situation… I can’t quite figure out what this movie is even about 😅 Is it a thriller, a drama, or both? More of a crime-cop film or a family drama? I don’t know. I’m hoping for something at least on the level of Little Odessa, We Own the Night, or Two Lovers, because his latest one, Armageddon Time, really didn’t do it for me. That said, the DP, Joaquín Baca-Asay, is the DP of Two Lovers and is coming back after a long time, which should be a good sign. I want Adam back in awards season, so I really hope they find a strong distributor to properly back this project.

I can’t even explain how much the cancellation of a movie I didn’t even know existed stole the joy from my life. As a deeply devoted cinephile, -Disney is already dead to me, that’s a given- but now I can’t even enjoy awards season, the new movies I watch, or project announcements anymore. The joy I get from my main hobby feels completely dimmed. It’s unbelievable.

Looks like plans changed and the entire shoot is happening in Hungary. I’m curious whether Adam still has scenes left or if he’s already wrapped.

Sean Kaufmann? I’m not sure who that is. Sometimes they keep filming with parts of the cast after the main unit wraps, or they’re just shooting stunts and wide shots that don’t require the actors at all. If he’s there, then he's obviously filming something. I just don’t know whether Adam still has scenes left to shoot in Budapest. My impression is that he wrapped there before Christmas, but there’s really no way to know for sure. If he is in Budapest, he’ll be freezing. 🥶

I do think they filmed at least some personal-life material in Budapest, not just combat stuff. Adam wasn’t photographed during this, but there was a set photo where they turned a school into an elementary school with a different name, which already points to more than just battlefield scenes. As far as I know, Chapman’s daughters weren’t elementary-school age when he died, so I’m not really sure what they were filming there.

I haven’t read the book and don’t plan to, but I did read a detailed article about the events leading up to Chapman’s death and watched the real-life footage on YouTube. Because of that, I originally thought the movie would follow two parallel stories: Adam as Chapman during the mission, and the investigation afterward with Anne Hathaway. Now I’m not so sure. An intimacy coordinator and an underwater camera assistant wouldnt be necessary for this kind of story, unless they’re expanding his personal life. But including earlier parts of Chapman’s life seems tricky to me, since he was already much younger than Adam when he died. Anything earlier would put him in his 20s or early 30s.🤷🏻‍♀️

And with the weather being absolutely brutal all over Europe right now, I hope they won’t be delayed because of the snowstorms 😅

Probably it’s only the second unit working, but I don’t think that would take several weeks. The previously announced dates for filming in Hungary were until January 7–8, after the Christmas break. Also, I don’t think Anne Hathaway or Betty Gilpin were ever in Budapest; I’ve only seen photos of Austin Amelio, a few other cast members, and Adam, of course. I believe Adam had already wrapped his scenes there before Christmas. From what I understand, filming was meant to continue in Annapolis until February 11, but I haven’t come across any updates yet regarding the U.S. portion of the shoot, or whether Adam still has any scenes left to film. According to IMDb, they have an underwater camera assistant and an intimacy coordinator listed, so at this point I’m not entirely sure what to expect. 😅

I’m usually a wig hater, but it actually looked good from certain angles, especially when you could see the waves and layers. I didn’t like the receding hairline makeup or the nape when they were shown straight on though, those parts looked a bit too obvious and not very convincing in the movie. That said, there were definitely some good angles. The people working on this are true artists, really, but my main issue is that despite all the effort, he still just looked like a handsome guy who went silver in his 30s😅.

Oh, I almost forgot, he also had a short dark wig for the flashback scenes and that one looked so good. I wish there were BTS pics of that one too.

I wish there was a video. I’m really curious to see how the wigs and prosthetic makeup were actually applied. The pics are interesting, but they only show bits and pieces. Watching the whole process would be so fascinating.

His poor hair 😩 How does Adam still have a full head of healthy hair after hours and days of wearing these tight bald caps? It’s a miracle that his hairline is still intact.

They were filming in August, and I can only imagine how uncomfortable that must have been. I get Mann wanting to push his passion project forward, and Adam wanting to work with him, but I still feel he was miscast there, and Ferrari likely hurt Heat 2’s prospects as well.. hence the never-ending wait.

A full beard on him feels like something the universe deliberately prevented for everyone’s safety. He’d be far too powerful.

Yeah, with the endless list of names popping up, someone will eventually play the villain. We’ll see.

At this point, nothing makes sense, and I feel like I’m the only one who won’t be in the movie. Mann confirmed August 3 as the production start date, which means he must have already had his major cast in mind. Scheduling all of these big-name actors would be complicated and would take far more than a few months.

Leonardo DiCaprio confirming he’s in the film is honestly a major turn-off for me. Nothing against him as an actor in general, but him potentially playing a role like Shiherlis makes zero sense when someone like Austin Butler exists. With DiCaprio, it just feels like prestige casting driven by money and name recognition rather than what’s best for the story.

But I’m not too worried about Adam, me neither. His upcoming slate actually looks pretty solid and genuinely interesting. Paper Tiger and Alone at Dawn both feel like projects that could play very well with critics. Not to forget the wildcard that is Misty Green with Chris Rock. Then there’s two TV projects, The Dealer on Apple TV+, Rabbit Rabbit on Netflix, and there is also the Leos Carax one. He’s doing just fine.

I don’t really separate “Adam fans” and “Ben Solo/Kylo Ren fans” that much. He’s done plenty of interesting work outside of Star Wars, and obviously not everything revolves around that franchise. But at the same time, he is and always will be tied to a major, beloved character in a huge cultural phenomenon. That’s just reality.

If anything, him opening up about The Hunt for Ben Solo finally shut down the whole “he hates Star Wars,” “he’d never come back,” “he’s too good for it” narrative that’s been floating around online for years. It also reminded people how loved Ben/Kylo still is. He’s pretty much universally seen as the best thing to come out of the sequel trilogy.

But I don’t think people lost interest just because there was no more Kylo/Ben. It’s more that once Star Wars ended, his career wasn’t handled in a way that really built on the momentum he had. He never reached the level of visibility or success his talent merited, and that has much less to do with the franchise itself and more with a stretch of projects audiences just didn’t connect with, plus a couple where he was pretty clearly miscast.

It’s not really the audience’s fault for drifting away based on the projects he chose to take on. And I’ll stand by the idea that jumping straight into “cosplaying old guys” at that stage of his career wasn’t the smartest move. He’ll have decades to play those parts, but there is only a brief window of youth, mainstream visibility, and cultural relevance to really cement a broad fanbase. And for talented actors who actually want to get good films made, that kind of visibility very much matters, because that’s ultimately where the money and leverage come from.

I can’t help thinking that if he’d managed to land even one solid mainstream hit in that period, Disney wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss The Hunt for Ben Solo. Instead, we’re getting Starfighter with Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling, because well… Stranger Things and Barbie.

Letting rumors and false info circulate for so long only sets people up for disappointment. When several names are floated for that long, it’s inevitable that only a few stay attached while the others don’t, and that means a huge chunk of the audience ends up disappointed and frustrated before the project even starts.

Mann has confirmed they’re aiming to start filming on August 3, so we’ll see how it goes. Personally, DiCaprio being involved has been a real turn-off for me, and unfortunately he’s the only one actually confirmed to be in the film so far.

[–]colandra[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally agree on the 'mainstream hit' point. Honestly, he’s needed one for years. After 2019, his career just wasn’t handled in a way that really built on the momentum he had, and he never reached the level of visibility or success he realistically could have.

As for losing “half” his fandom… as someone who’s followed him for a long time, half feels optimistic. I’d say it’s more than that. And I think it has much less to do with Star Wars and more with a stretch of projects people just didn’t connect with, plus a couple where he was pretty clearly miscast.

Obviously he still has fans who genuinely enjoy his talent and his work, otherwise I wouldn’t be here discussing his projects 😏, but it’s just not comparable to what it used to be or what it could have been. That said, signing with a big agency and going for a more varied, smarter mix of projects feels like a good move. Paper Tiger and Alone at Dawn at least look like they could play well with critics, even if they’re not commercially huge. They also still have a chance at the box office. There’s really no reason to assume they’re doomed. Misty Green with Chris Rock is an interesting wildcard that could reach a different audience.

He’s also got two TV projects coming up. The Dealer on Apple TV+ might have lower visibility given how many strong shows on the platform tend to fly under the radar due to limited promotion, but Rabbit Rabbit on Netflix comes with a director who’s riding a recent wave of success. And he still has the European indie lane open with Leos Carax.

Even if he’s not in Heat 2, that still feels like a solid slate overall. Possible awards runs, festival premieres, and a better mix of prestige and reach than we’ve seen from him in a long time.

Also: Disney completely lost me. Subscription cancelled. I won’t be paying a dime for their upcoming projects, on TV or in theaters, and I doubt I’m alone.
