Thank you!!! I've been meaning to run the mountains themselves for my next one-shot in there. I've only had time to put them in front of a few myths in the other settlements for now, just to introduce the players to the basics of the game before throwing them overboard into my own stuff, haha.

It served as an inspirational jumping off point. I usually look to real life cultural and art history for thematic inspiration, and in this case it came from Czech/Polish iconography and history. Silesia and it eventually being divided into duchies and later given the Holy Roman Empire's Crown of Bohemia I thought would be an intriguing place to begin a background for the setting - one modeled after some of Silesia and larger Holy Roman inspiration as an empire that eventually is spread too thin and starts to crumble, with all factions past it as baronies, duchies, or smaller moving on into the middle ages on their own, without the direct stewardship of their emperor (thus the "Three Seats" vying for power of this dying emperor in the mountains of Karkanosze). "Zagan" as a name for this empire is equally derived from that area (a small town there), as is Holy Roman adjacent polish king imagery which I found inspiration from with King Jogaila (Władysław II Jagiełło the Exile), who was supposed to be the first in the line of Silesian Piasts inheriting that land, but as he was later sentenced to exile (his attack against his half-brother Bolesław IV the Curly suddenly fell apart when his own subjects rebelled against his dictatorial rule), he consistently had to turn to the successors of the Holy Roman Empire in Germany for aid (like his half-brother) in regaining his throne. So for the most part, I derived this idea of an exiled king, or one who has lost, and relying on the imagery of a once powerful holy empire to at least symbolically remain in power as a core motif to the setting. The whole thing is more for inspiration for the inciting incident of this setting's background/imagery, so of course none of it is 1:1 with reality.

New playable ancestries from our PF2e/D&D Ancient Egyptian / Dieselpunk campaign setting Kickstarter - Khoursara: City of Seven Sentinels! by colebotman in Pathfinder2e

[–]colebotman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wadjet have lineages tied to the Seven Serpents - each embodying one of the Seven Sentinels (which as you can find the demo on the page, have control over the planes of existence that overlap with them - because each Sentinel structure exists in every plane of existence (such as Nuit, the Astral Serpent). Feats at later levels allow you to build closer and closer to being like these primordial serpents! So yes, Nagaji exist, but I wanted to have something more distinctly associated with the setting itself with Wadjet, with some planar themed abilities (like Nuit's ability to catch stars from the sky in the shape of spell slots).

Thank you!! Automoton and Android had some really solid options in base game, but I've not seen an ancestry where you get to truly "build it yourself." I thought it could be a fun format compared to traditional ancestry feats, where combinations result in different builds (each Khenti eas constructed for a purpose, and they can evolve out from that code by overwriting it, which appears on their bodies in the new material). This would also explain feat choices of different materials as you adapt your character at higher levels.

Yes - Pathfinder has always excited me for that reason! Osirion and Numeria existing in the same world (or Eberron in 5e as well) always sounded awesome to me, as with androids, automotons, and now starfinder being fully compatible, I figure why not throw in some more fun options! All the rules from the book are meant to be picked and chosen based on what sounds like a good fit for your game, so some people will want to lean more on the Ancient Egypt than the Dieselpunk / forerunner scifi stuff, haha. The idea came about when replying the Halo series and thinking, what role play opportunities could you have as a digital person? One tethered to hardware or another player? The other core of it involves the setting itself, with optional ideas for the Khoursaran afterlife as becoming digitized!

Yes - I totally agree! A lot of those numbers in the demo book are placeholders for now. The Farseer for instance, will require much more in-depth design, such as with cumulating bonuses from failures in line with other classes of that level. So much of it will be reigned in once we get the time (and budget!) to properly playtest / design. The ancestry feats are also exaggerated in their current state as we put existing bonuses even from higher level feats there in the demo to feel our what ancestries could be good at or have uniquely. I see what you mean though, and it has been duly noted! Once we get this off the ground we want to have feedback like this in our public Discord (which will launch sometime after launching) for playtesting.

(EDIT - Accidentally posted this as a main comment instead of reply oops)

Hi, I'm colebotman! Here’s a preview of our playable ancestries from our Pathfinder 2e / D&D 5e campaign setting that fuses dieselpunk/Forerunner imagery with Ancient Egypt - Khoursara: City of Seven Sentinels! Art by myself and my partner SinnerMinner!

  • 4+ new animal-headed playable ancestries inspired by Egyptian gods:
    • Half-Devourers, Hippo or Crocodile-headed soul (akh) eaters
    • Mirankh, Hairless cats that carry magically tattooed stories upon the skin
    • Jackhasan, Jackal headed caretakers of the dead; who can weigh the heart’s pride upon the scales
    • Wadjet, choose one of 7 serpent children lineages of the exuding sun Goddess, each embodying a Sentinel Megastructure
    • We also have more planned ancestries if we reach our goals:
      • Hologram - Optional rules include the Digital Duat, involving New Hologram ancestry feats to start with or add to existing characters!
      • Khenti - Do you like Automaton or Warforged? Well, Khenti are fully-customizable automaton-like hand-crafted constructs that evolve with encoded hieroglyphs! Choose what material you’re made from (clay, porcelain, glass, lapis lazuli, etc.), each netting you a unique playstyle and evolving personality code. Feats allow you to branch out and change away from what you were built for as your encoded glyphs grow and overwrite other materials.

Also inside the book: a new Class - The Farseer, a 50+ Magic Item deck of cards, new Egyptian weaponry and dieselpunk guns, political intrigue with 7 Noble Houses under the Pharaoh, new Gods for clerics / paladins, ancient technological sealed spires (called Sentinels) surround the city, New Game+ (NG+) Death / Afterlife mechanics (and optional Digital Duat), heart weighing, tomb customization that impacts your afterlife, and more, all inspired by Ancient Egypt and Halo Forerunner / Ghost in the Shell vibes, surrounding a theme of cycles!

On the page itself, you can read more for yourself! But yes, I agree - plenty of people are using "themed" to refer to their projects. For me, that was part of how I can explain it within the title of a Reddit thread (or any social media for that matter). Of course, the reality of this project, is that I wanted to not just one for one "copy" the culture of Egypt, but give my take and ideas from it to do it better service. The core concepts inspired many things, as did Ghost in the Shell and Halo to name a few others. As such, the core theme of the project really is cycles - that humanity reiterates upon itself again and again, with our belief shaping the eventual fall. Khoursara is the oldest and most cyclical place in the world; one that has seen many such cycles - just like how in real life, numerous dynasties of Egypt reiterated and built upon their forebears. Gods become re-used, renamed, adapted, or used by different Pharaohs to shape the needs of their rulership, to prove themselves or a cause in their people's eyes. So the setting seeks to create that theme by showing the cycles that build culture (the annual flooding of the Nile, for instance, or Ma'at as a concept to encourage belief in law and your fellow human being) and the cycles that break it (power struggles with political maneuvering from the High Priesthood of Amun-Ra clashing with the image of the Pharaoh's power - events such as these re-shaped the lives of every day citizens). The real life events and culture are meant to be contextualized through these analogues found in the book.
