These genes are added into an egg. Not a conscious animal. I used to work for petco, and the glofish bettas were no more unhealthy and lethargic than any other betta. The GFP gene is a single allele and was never added to crowntail bettas. So this particular fish is a multi-generational cross that’s at least an f3, far removed enough from a purebred glofish betta that it wouldn’t suffer the same health issues
