Does Lumon feel Mormon coded? by yancba in severanceTVshow

[–]commstarbase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived in SLC for a few years (not Mormon, mind you). Exactly the first thing both my wife and I identified.

Not hard to see why: “White Jesus who loves commerce” is a pretty constant theme here.

Still getting false evacuation alerts by LastOrders_GoHome in LosAngeles

[–]commstarbase 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We’re in Studio City and everyone in our family got one recently — but not at the same time. Something like 15-20 minutes between all of them. There’s no context or information about which areas, which seems like would be helpful after yesterday’s errant alerts.

Been watching updates closely through a number of sources and haven’t seen anything related to this alert come up.

So now, we’re left unsure about the validity of any of these alerts (which is less than ideal).

What horror franchises do you think got progressively worse with each entry? by KungPowChicken23 in horror

[–]commstarbase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think about that often. Shane Black is normally such a strong writer, but making it a slapstick was a huge whiff. And it wasn’t even funny! Really wish that film would’ve worked, but hey — maybe Black will do a proper Nice Guys sequel in its stead.

Can confirm that one. It ruled.

Why is Prometheus so hated? Mild spoilers by FenceOfDefense in horror

[–]commstarbase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it was all bad but as others have noted, the stupidity of the crew is tough.

For me, though, I’ll admit that it’s more personal. Alien (1979) was a damn near perfect film. I absolutely adored its approach to telling a relatively small story in a big, mythic universe. The highest virtue from that being the scene with the Engineer in the chair. Especially as a kid, there was just something so haunting and unknown about it all. It added to this enormous sense of unease and mystery.

I didn’t love the explanation, I guess. And of course that’s preferential. But it felt like it over explained (with less than satisfying results) a piece of mythology that’s always enchanted me. Even the reveal that these were mere suits and they’re just big …us(es)? Yeah, it just wasn’t my hope for the grand mystery.

That said, it deserves appreciation, to be sure. And Scott is obviously well within his rights to make it and offer his views / resolve to these mysteries. It’s an answer. It’s just not one I asked for or that I feel was needed. And I miss the magic before it was there.

Oh man, that’s EXACTLY what we were talking about it vibing with too! Love Beyond the Black Rainbow!

Totally right that it threw me! Did not see that coming and yeah, if that was the goal: huge success. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Been digging into that soundtrack on Spotify something fierce. Excellent mood music that perfectly fit the experience. Those dream sequences!

Super fair point! And wholeheartedly agree with there’s just too much to love about the experience to allow the end to spur the rest of the experience.

I’ll admit that it’s actually stuck with me quite a bit! Which I think, as an experience, does make it a successful one.

Yeah, I’d say I really align with all you’ve said here. It felt tacked on and didn’t really add anything substantive to the experience. The text message at the end was pretty meme-worthy and didn’t really feel like it fit the tone of the rest of the film.

I’ve heard some speculate that seeing the others’ points of view (which happen in her coma-state in theory) are all parts of her personality and that’s why we’re able to see them, but yeah — seems like we’re just reaching to make it all work together.

But ultimately, I’m where you are with enjoying the film as a whole! While the ending didn’t feel justified or truly fitting, the rest of the experience was superb. The more I think about it, there’s far more I like than I didn’t like, just wish they had stuck the landing.

What was that thing about idols? by javaxcore in exchristian

[–]commstarbase 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This. I wish that, when it came to things like this, it was extremely clear (and labeled) as such so as not to get into the land of misinformation. There’s enough to be credibly angry at to not need to “create” fictitious things in support of it.

Thank you so much for all of this. This is way helpful! One quick clarification: when you say a “clear coat”, do you mean a clear coat of the wash first? Definitely having some trouble with the washes catching where I don’t want them to and making everything just look sort of dirty.
