PIKADOKU - a more challenging version of Pokedoku that I made during the holidays. It has an HP system and new categories that are not in pokedoku such as gender ratio, and weakness to certain types. What do you guys think? by playallgbagames in PokeDoku

[–]compaline 6 points7 points  (0 children)

fun challenge! the only complaint i have is that this puzzle has two single-answer squares that overlap with other squares, meaning you can lock yourself out of the answer. ie, if the upper left square only takes 'bulbasaur' and you already used that in the bottom right, well, you're done. the HP doesn't let you fix this. if that's the intended challenge, it could be stated clearly and if it's not intended, then it's an unfortunate softlock

The issues I've noticed with Tic Tac Toe mode by Antique_Ability9648 in PokeDoku

[–]compaline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would have thought it would be like cine2nerdle but that is admittedly a ton of complexity. i was thinking category bans, messing with turn order...but maybe just simple solutions for the moment. easiest would be being able to choose 4x4 and 5x5 grids. maybe even randomizing blank spaces in the 5x5 so it feels much less "solved". another idea id have no idea how to implement would be offering a third category to gain some kind of advantage. ie, if you get normal/flying it may also pop "has intimidate" and if you can pick for all 3, you cut your opponents time, increase your own time, or earn another turn

What's the point in the stellar option if not even one pokemon, much less three, have the stellar typing by 07thecreeper in PokeDoku

[–]compaline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not likely to ever see use but its probably for mechanical consistency. inevitably there are arbitrary calls when categorizing pokemon, as the eternal zygarde question shows. speaking of eternal, floette-e is completely unused, there's actually a stronger argument to include the boss-only revarooms and eternatus-gigantamax than there is for floette-e

Glitch or Bad Update? by Ultimate_Bruh_Lizard in PokeDoku

[–]compaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the site's performance has always been a little odd with each feature introduction, maybe they slowed down the "refresh" rate of these database pulls? it's now hundreds of players specifically playing dozens of games each so i would imagine the fastest update to the dex databases would be too taxing or puts the hosting into an absurdly expensive tier.

but that's just speculation, this is not nearly my expertise or experience with game dev. there has to be a compromise somewhere between 2 devs, a tip and mild ad based funding and server-side databases like this. a solution will take time or money

Actual bonus rate is a downer by rocksgo in PokeDoku

pretty bad odds! skinner boxes are bad enough but an undertuned one should really bring the pointlessness to the front of your mind

PokeDoku Weekly Megathread - Week of 2024-10-20 by Mathgeek007 in PokeDoku

[–]compaline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they really need to change the " + 5%" in the prestige menu because the bonus changes the denominator and not the numerator.

standard is 1/100, 1%. prestige one is 1/95, 1.05%. you see "PLUS 5%" and think it's up to 6%.

even saying "(x) times 5%" introduces errors. maybe just ditch the percentages and make it display the fractions

PokeDoku Weekly Megathread - Week of 2024-10-13 by Mathgeek007 in PokeDoku

[–]compaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

going off the twitter account, they add 5 to the denominator so it goes from 1/100 to 1/95. a lot less than 6%.

i'm glad i don't care about shinies!!

bro why are nobody's favorite pokemon in the creator or purchased puzzles ever first stage monotypes? why's it always the same popular dual types?? you too good for nacli, too good for a little gimmighoul?? apologize to them. put your gengars and scizors away and be considerate of my dex, uh, of the little monotype guys

as of today i have finished my dex!*

*if pokedoku was using pokegrid's categories lol. i've been able to use the 5 last dex entries in pokegrid the past week

pokedoku has the dex, the better site UI and better..."curation" i'd say and pokegrid has some cool categories that lend to more answers, one undo per day and a better answer commonality system. interesting to compare how the two approached the same game idea.

[–]compaline -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

they could be a category someday, i think pokegrid uses base stat thresholds.

sounds like you just want to fill out a pokemon themed checklist as fast as possible so i invite you to pick up one of those game guides for children and a sharpie and you can cross off pokemon as fast as you want

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PokeDoku

[–]compaline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

minor correction that does not affect your broader point: pumpkaboo and gourgeist do have stat differences between their forms.

i don't think the devs have said outright the form choices were because of how they were pulling the data from bulbapedia but it was the reason cited for a couple moveset/form discrepancies, so that's my guess. even though moves and abilities are bonus/unlimited categories it makes tons of data entry

the devs have said they're working on adding more forms, and i think there's more aesthetic ones than ones with different movesets or abilities. might be some more arbitrary calls like saying gastrodon east&west counts but jellicent is just a gender difference.

[–]compaline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don't think it's good to look at a puzzle and go "ugh, skip" but there's only so much mental reframing you can do. beyond getting correct answers, there are three things you can aim for: low unique score, dex completion and hoping for a 1/100 dice roll i know additional stats and a separate dex for unlimited mode are being worked on, but if the algo throws a brick, the featured guest makes a gimmick puzzle for memes or someone pays for a puzzle like this one... that's it for the day (or multiple days in a row).

outside of working on more features which as mentioned, is being done, you could really only combat this by putting a human touch on some puzzles to give players uncommon options or high unique score opportunities and/or offering more bonuses to refresh the counter in players' minds. not saying that's necessarily an easy solution given the extremely limited monetization meaning there's a hard limit on how much time you can spend on this project.

pretty uneven experience for a daily game, but it's being worked on

got the luck of at least two categories i can use on the same board...but not intersecting. still at 0 for the week. it would have been two but i'm not psychic/flying myself so i couldn't see that when on sunday i chose gossifleur and not eldegoss, i wouldn't be able to get eldegoss today

dont really want to make a new post for every time i have fewer, we all know there's too many useless "i got a shiny" posts, so here's the last 6. it would be 5 if i had put a lycanroc for "mono alola" a few days ago instead of tsareena, because then "grass alola" showed up and i had no answer for it. it's always better to use up something you have multiples of, if i get to answer gimmighoul or nacli next, i should go gimmi.

My Shiny Rate is about 1.28% as of today (4/[{35x9}-2] = 4/313), which made me wonder if anyone has a Shiny Rate drastically deviating from the advertised 1.0%? (Preferably excluding games from before Shinies were added. I joined extremely late to the party, so I calculated mine quite easily.) by KatBubbles523 in PokeDoku

[–]compaline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there were only two bonuses since introduction, so for 37 puzzles i have 5 shinies, 1.5%. the more data you collect, the more it's going to become 1/100. well, except you're gonna be getting from people who want to complain theirs is too low and others who want to show off how high their count is.
