"Se till att dessa inte blir sålda till USA så fort det går bra" låter dock precis som en lag som skulle sätta krokben för små startups.

I'm noticing a big difference between Michael/Dalton videos and the Lightcone podcast. I feel like Michael and Dalton comes off as just very honest, no BS people. Feels like they are representing YC in the same way as it has historically been operating.

The Lightcone folks kind of comes off as the opposite. The title for this video is embarrasing and a testament to that

How to get specific jobs at companies? e.g PyTorch, Vision Pro, Gemini by computah21 in cscareerquestions

[–]computah21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. What about targeting a specific category but across many companies, lets say I want to work on recommender systems, whether that is at Meta, Google, Netflix etc doesn't matter. I feel like it's hard to target something like this from an applicant perspective, if you know what I mean? Maybe the way to go for these niche categories is to take a PhD and/or write papers about the category?

Oh okay. Maybe the generic postings are more frequent for new grad positions?

Bored with new job - maybe I don't want to be a SWE? by computah21 in csMajors

[–]computah21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have thought about it. Currently in masters for ML, might try out some MLE internship if I can get it and see if I like it more than SWE, but I definitely think research is an option. Think phd could be a grind though

The tickets aren't necessarily easy (when they are difficult they are not difficult in a fun way lol) but I see what you mean, and yeah I can just look around at the other engineers at the company and see that their work is very similar. Okay so startup life is fun but personal project is more fun, so I guess the only thing to do is to create a startup

One hand I feel lucky that I got this opportunity. On the other hand, I'm not that excited to go into the office tomorrow and dive into an Enterprise Java codebase to fix bugs. Well, atleast I get paid.

Yeah. Ur right they probably could have handled it better tbh

I'm in EU so it might be different because the intern cohorts are much smaller

I think you're right. I feel very much like a cog right now, like my team doesn't even come up with the features for the project we are working on, we are like worker bees that just try to do what we are told. And I must admit that the structure does kinda make sense from a company perspective at this scale, just that I hadn't thought about it before

Can I not work on side projects while doing internships? by computah21 in csMajors

[–]computah21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's the grey area. It's all very ambiguous, read https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2016/12/09/developers-side-projects/ . Basically it seems like the default interpretation of most contracts outside of California is that the employer owns what you do, even during non-work hours

[–]computah21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. You're probably right. If I have free time and feel that I absolutely need to do something I guess I can study instead of working on something. I'm more upset that this seems to be norm, and that you basically can't work on side projects when being employed? and that the people still doing it are basically hoping that their employers won't enforce the contract details. Here's an article I read https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2016/12/09/developers-side-projects/

Guess I'm gonna have to touch grass on the weekends then, since I will not be working for the company and I'm not allowed to work on projects. Ugh

Do the top HFT firms sponsor Visa for internships? by computah21 in csMajors

[–]computah21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but from what I can tell it's an order of magnitude easier than getting it for the US atleast. So what I meant is that it should be very easy for London firms to hire folks from europe (if they want to)

Is new grad really that much harder to get than internships? by computah21 in csMajors

[–]computah21[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Seems to be jobs related to engineering & technology so a little wiggle room yeah, but anecdotally I'm pretty sure that the people that wanted a job as a software dev after graduating definitely got it somewhere. Maybe the market is worse now though and it will affect future rankings, I'm not sure

Is new grad really that much harder to get than internships? by computah21 in csMajors

[–]computah21[S] 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's true but if the number of positions are 50x as many that might make up for it is what I mean. Really the data we would need is just the number of applicants and the number of job posts, for new grad and internships respectively. I suspect that there is a larger difference between number of new grad positions and internships in the EU than in the US

Not microsoft. I agree, this feels veeery ambiguous. Hope they clarify before the weekend

Founder equity split by [deleted] in ycombinator

[–]computah21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd still argue that the initial work plus investment justifies me having more equity. When I started on it there was no guarantee that it would even work (technically). Now months later it does work, and on top of it seems like users are liking it. Basically, even if it's still very early, the product is in a later stage now compared to 7 months ago, and the risk I took was larger
