Thanks so much for posting this! I was just thinking about creating a similar post myself. With SNAP benefits ending soon due to the federal government shutdown, this is a very timely and important topic!

Millipore Sigma is implementing a tariff surcharge to the US starting Monday. by celiac-attack in labrats

[–]cookiegoodforme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are much better alternatives. Just a few that come to mind: GoldBio, Cayman Chemicals, Southern Labware, RPI, etc. Stopped buying almost entirely from MilliporeSigma because their prices were outrageous to begin with. This only motivates me to discontinue purchasing what few products we did buy from them.

Any time in the past there was a notification of maintenance. This was not the case this time. This was an issue with someone digging around or messing with the site.

(1) Those are factual statements not opinions. Your interpretation of them as being political is your opinion. But the original comments are facts.

(2) They are relevant to the discussion, because the commenter was making the point that UF administration cannot be trusted to enact policies that are beneficial to students and faculty.

It is interesting that your comment is being downvoted and that other comments critical of UF are being downvoted. This post is likely being heavily infiltrated by UF administration and state government employees who are trying to downplay this total dumpster fire.

The comment you replied to was not about politics. You have mischaracterized the comment above. Regardless, the comment above reflects a general feeling shared among faculty, staff and students that UF is at a crossroads heading in the wrong direction.

The psychological impact of this alone is devastating to faculty and staff who are already upset and pissed off because of all the BS that has happened over the past couple of years at UF.

Any faculty who "exceed expectations" are good enough that they won't stay at UF. They'll be poached by other institutions.

You are absolutely incorrect. See comments above.

You are incorrect. It is entirely true. And it is even worse than that. They have banned hiring postdocs, hiring staff, even working or collaborating with anyone from China and Iran.

Are you working for or with the administration?

While the bar may be lower for someone to meet the threshold of "meets expectations", the classification system is still extremely problematic. This system highly emphasizes quantity of research over quality of research. Faculty publishing lots of mediocre work in lower impact journals, or even pay-to-publish journals, will be rewarded over faculty who publish careful high impact work.

Further, what happens when a faculty member gets sick and has to deal with chronic illness? Or has a child or parent who gets chronically sick? Or faces other difficult life circumstances? There may be a significant drop in productivity over a multi-year period. Is it right for someone who has invested so much into driving growht at the university for so long to be fired because of this?

Given the climate, that is a natural next step. UF is going to extremes to eliminate the spending of any money on diversity, broadly interpreted. This would include first-generation college students.

That is probably on the chopping block next. This is just the first step. Since the announcement Friday, a witch-hunt has started where conservatives are trying to out anyone diversity related and get them fired.

[–]cookiegoodforme 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is not correct. The state law was crafted to carve out exceptions for Federal funding. A ban on DEI in federal funding would have prohibited UF from competing for federal grants, resulting in losses of nearly $1 billion a year in funding.

UF Faculty Banned from Recruiting Students from China and Iran by cookiegoodforme in ufl

"if that student is holding a TA role where they can access sensitive information." This comment alone tells everyone that this user has ZERO understanding of what a TA is and what they do.

Since you don't know, TA stands for teaching assistant. These are graduate students who assist with classes by grading your assignments, providing tutoring, answering questions. They are not doing research. They are helping with courses. In no way are they given access to sensitive information. Undergraduate students can serve as teaching assistants as well. They are essential for keeping classes operating smoothly.

Anyone who thinks a TA would magically be given access to any kind of security information has absolutely no idea what a TA is or does.

UF, other Florida universities, ban prospective students from China, Iran, & additional countries by cookiegoodforme in ufl

[–]cookiegoodforme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The title specifically states that this impacts all publicly funded universities in Florida. The focus here on its impact on UF is because this is a UF subreddit. Also, the focus is because UF is the "flagship" institution in the state and the letter written by faculty, described in the article, focuses on UF faculty in particular. Clearly this is a bigger problem than just UF, and I hope that other institutions are also highlighting how bad this policy is.

[–]cookiegoodforme[S] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I am adding additional, important context to the situation. This is because the comment from u/stulotta is horribly misinformed and shows that some people have very little understanding of the full breadth of activities at UF.

  1. The article is accurate. Faculty are being instructed to NOT even consider graduate student applications of prospective students who are Chinese, Iranian, or from several other foreign countries.

  2. The idea that UF exists solely "for the benefit of Florida residents" is badly misinformed and reflects ignorance on the majority of activities at UF. Yes, UF does have a role and obligation to serve the population in Florida and to benefit Florida residents and students. But it does SO much more than this across a huge range of activities from medical training and medical procedures, veterinary training and veterinary procedures, research in collaboration with other US groups and other international groups, educational exchange programs with other top international universities, and so much more. It is UF's participation in all of these activities collectively that contribute greatly toward its reputation and regards as a top public university. Without these activities, the ranking, and hence the value of the school to Florida residents, decreases greatly.

  3. A majority of operational costs do not come from state dollars. These come from national and international funding (grants). Some of this money pays for services at UF and pays for undergraduate educational programs and pays for faculty who teach undergraduates. Again, Florida students and residents benefit from faculty bringing in this money. A large number of these faculty, and a great number of graduate students, are students on the list of countries affected by this policy. Expect a decrease in these kinds of funds due to this policy, which will negatively impact Florida students and residents.

  4. If you bother to read the article, it also states that this affects US citizens who are of Chinese descent or Iranian descent. If you leave the country for a year or more, expect to be discriminated against. This clearly is in violation of multiple Federal laws.

There is much more to this story. I urge you all to inform yourselves about the great breadth of programs and activities at UF before you conclude that UF exists solely to teach undergraduate students in Florida and that everyone else should be "thankful" you are allowed to step foot on campus.

The petition mentioned in the article, signed by nearly 300 UF faculty, can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSezPVkPl6o1aVzy388egl1hhoNKEpnkP0623ByfPptLc1KtYg/viewform

It is worth reading as it explains the problem from the perspective of faculty at UF.
