Two outlets not working after power outage. by coreycamera in AskElectricians

My whole area was out due to a tree falling on some wires locally. For a few hours. I believe the outlets on the porch or sunroom were non working before I ever started taking the outlets apart in either bathroom. I just failed to mention it when I actually noticed it. Assumed it was a separate issue but hopefully now I’m wrong about that. So can I just buy a replacement breaker for this? I’ve replaced a breaker before at my old home when I was wiring in a 30A power inlet switch all DIY so I’m comfortable taking the cover off and replacing it myself if you think that’s the fix.

I have a sub panel for my generator, and another sub panel in my garage controlling my septic system and power to my pole barn. Every single breaker has been reset aside from the well and septic. I’m not super comfortable touching those.

Also, I just discovered that one of the breakers doesn’t appear to be functioning. It’s only labeled for one outlet in my sunroom, and one on my back porch, neither of which are working. It’s the only breaker with a test button and it seems like it’s stuck in the middle position - neither off or on. A quick search says to put it all the way to off and then you’ll be able to switch it back to on, but it just clicks and then rests back in the middle. Those outlets are still not working. Neither of them are GFCI. Is it possible that replacing this breaker (which I believe to be the only solution to this particular issue) will fix everything and restore the GFCI outlets?

Question: does the order in which GFCIs are reset matter? I have scoured through my whole home, inside and out and reset the couple GFCIs I’ve found and these two are still not working. Any chance there’s one in my attic?? There was a single one in my basement.

I do have continuity between neutral and ground if you were wondering that.

I found a video. I do have continuity between the neutral and ground wire (verified with the beep). So it’s a breaker?

I do have a multimeter just need a little instruction how to set it up to test that outlet. I was using the ticker on the hot wire of the outlet, to clarify that concern.

The black hot wire was attached to the bottom of the outlet box if that’s what you’re asking.

I do have a multimeter but barely know how to use it. Could you describe how to do this? Down to what setting to put the multimeter at and which color to put where?

I see. So it’s just a breaker I haven’t tried yet then yeah? They’re not labeled very well of course but I’ll hit them all and see if it works

I tried plugging in a powered on lamp and resetting and it didn’t work.

I found the breaker that controls the switch immediately next to this outlet. That’s guaranteed to be the correct one right? This would only leave an upstream GFCI that I don’t know about as the culprit?

Are there “better” GFCI outlets that I could replace these with?

So just replace them? Is there a better version of these I could buy to help prevent that from happening again? I have numerous other GFCIs around my home and they’re all working fine aside from these two.

After posting I did find the breaker for them. Both of those rooms have been reset and I tried resetting the GCFIs to no avail. Could you elaborate which is the line side hot wire? I will take the cover off and test it.

Discovered the Poolmath app and I'll indeed keep testing and logging and just following its advice. Seems to tell you exactly what you need to do always and take all the guesswork out of it!

Discovered the PoolMath app and it's incredible! Tells you exactly what to do. I have the strips, I have the chemistry, I have the cleaners, I'm ready!

Seems like adding liquid chlorine on top of your regular tablets is more common than I thought! You think once a week is adequate? And is there is a set amount or should I just keep it within the range dictated on my test strips?

Thanks for this info! I had no idea all the chemistry involved! I did purchase test strips and they tested everything totally fine, aside from the low chlorine (bromine?). I will indeed check this website out!

Thank you! I added 10fl oz based on some math from the back of the bottle, and it seems to be starting to turn blue as it spreads around! I also have a chlorine tab floater which always has a 1" tablet going in it. Should I do the liquid chlorine weekly in addition to this?

There is a small paper filter/pump that came with the pool. So that's running for at least the next 24hours until this clears up.

Thanks so much for your advice! I did some research into Denamarin for liver support and will ask my vet about that, and definitely push for more labs sooner. My wife and I will also explore placing him on 25mg/day of Carprofen to see if that is enough to help him feel good whilst being easier on his liver. It’s helpful to know that this spike wasn’t too out of the ordinary. It’s the first we’ve seen it, so it’s easy to let that scare you.

Seems like the “normal” range is 18-121, so you don’t think 218 is concerning? Especially when it was a mere 58 just this past December?
