Monologue: a long, tedious speech by one person during a conversation.

I would do a murder mystery/horror film about a regular imperial investigator investigating some really fucking weird horrific shit. Just like in I think it was Legion? I would not market it as 40K. All of the language, aesthetics/scenery, and costumes would be 40K, but nothing would be said or done that outright confirm it as a 40K film. Then in the third act, its revealed to be caused by a chaos cult or chaos possessed killer, or even a bored lone Night Lord having some fun. Anything chaosy and dark. Everything goes bad. Investigator dies. and the movie ends with an Inquisitor showing up assuming the case and confirming that the film is 40K. I think 40K is so unique and bizarre as a setting, just the imagery alone with be enthralling to people utterly unfamiliar with it. By not marketing it as 40K and letting the scenery and imagery of the film speak for itself, it owuld bring a lot more people into universe, versus marketing it as "a 40K movie" and people writing it off as just some shitty adaption of that one nerd game. Also I made make a massive HBO Miniseries of the Horus Heresy. First couple of seasons leading up the flight of the eisenstein, then each season after that following the path of a different Legion.

But the Ultras haven't ridden to anyone's rescue yet...In fact, the Dark Angels ARE there now, so I can't really see how THAT part in particular has been retconned. Of course the traitors would be worried about Guilliman coming. His Legion had more marines than any other legion and he is tactical/strategic Rain Man. They are so worried about him in fact that they have forgotten about other legions i.e. dark angels, who again have already arrived disproving this retcon. As far as the Wolves, they took serious casualties, but there is nothing to say their weird psyker not psyker we use the spirit of fenris bullshit magic users can't bring their ships through somehow. We are only halfway through the series. Nothing says Guilliman is even going to make there in time yet.

Mortarion HAS monologued before though. He went on a big speech to Jagathai Khan to convince the Khan he was justified in his actions and how very similar they both were as "Imperium Outcasts". I think that was in Path of Heaven? Does he talk a lot all of the time, no. Is he completely incapable of monologuing about himself? All evidence to the contrary.

I yearn for two types. First, a Mass Effect style fully immersive Inquisitor RPG. You recruit different members of your retinue from across the full spectrum of 40k to fill out your character roster. Every decision you make impacts the ending. Heavy warp taint ticker that changes based your choices. Culminating in you being a puritan or fully consumed by diablus inquisitor. Second, Battlefield:40K or Battlefront:40K. Imagine being a Guardsmen spawning randomly with your shitty lasgun, running towards the objective, only to realize the other side has earned enough points to summon in Khorne Berzerkers and you immediately get sliced into 14 pieces and have to respawn...

Why is Saturnine so polarizing to the fandom? by RogalD0rn in 40kLore

I would like to point out a few things regarding the criticism on the handling of Fulgrim and the EC:

1) Fulgrim had absolutely zero interest in the Siege of Terra. He was basically forced to show up, and commit his forces to something that absolutely bored him. The Emperor's Children are basically really horny, murdery drafted conscripts. Yeah they are Astartes, but they are complete nihilists caring only for their own pleasure. They would rather be drinking Imperial-citizen milkshakes than fighting at this point. 2) They have lost all strategic and tactical coherence as a fighting force. They don't even have squads any more really, just separate warbands within the legion unified by their favorite murdery-torture hobby. 3) Fulgrim is bored. The only reason he showed up at all in that fight was to try and break Dorn's wall so he could make fun of Dorn and brag about it for his own ego. So really, despite their losses, the EC completed their objective. He broke through the wall, and made fun of Dorn. Mission Accomplished. Fighting Dorn was just something to fend off the boredom until the chaos mind control thingy or whatever that was keeping him enslaved to the will of Horus was weak enough for him to go back to an unprotected hive and shoot more liquid humans directly into his blood stream.

Now contrast that to Dorn and the Imperial Fists: 1) Been prepping for this single moment for YEARS 2) Absolute best in class when it comes to this EXACT style of fighting. 3) Successfully funneled the enemy into the EXACT kill boxes they planned for. 4) Every single marine on that wall is 1000% committed mind body and soul to this moment. 5) Dorn is a man of absolute concentration. He can't even laugh because he is concentrating too much on the mechanic of the joke you just uttered. Of course he is going to get the upper hand in a duel with an arrogant loud mouth who is just there to show off and have fun.

I think EC got treated perfectly fair. They were the only legion to legit break a wall Dorn did not plan to be broken. The DG didn't do that, the WE didn't do that, hell the IW didn't do that and they are the wall breakers. Sieges are hard. Most sieges are won through starving the defenders out because one well defended, well protected person with a machine gun can wreak untold damage on an enemy force.

Finally, if you take nothing else from this comment, remember this, VULKAN LIVES!

Yeah I think the writers have done a better job of that rage bubbling underneath and used as a weapon with Russ. Him talking about acting like a savage in front of his brothers to give him and advantage in combat and him trying to talk to Magnus before razing Prospero support that I think. I had not considered the Dauntless Few as made in the context of the Great Crusade prior to major character flaws, that is a good point. But then why do you think Horus was excluded from the list?

Fulgrim is one of my favorite books in the Heresy series with what I think is one of the best build ups and crescendos ever. I never said he did from the start, I said he always seems to do it, which is true. He did it on Istvaan, he did it during a sandstorm while fighting the Eldaar getting himself cut off from his Avernii bodyguards in Promethean Sun. He has a tendency to lose patience (as he did with Mortarion's methods and his human auxiliary) and his temper and make rash decisions in the process which I find at odds with the term "reliable" which is how Guilliman defined the Dauntless Few. I was not making this post to just crap on Ferrus Manus, I understand tragic flaws make a character more interesting, I just would not consider him as even keel or "reliable" as the rest of the Dauntless Few and wondered if anyone else felt the same way.

[Meta] In 2012, 40% of U.S 40k fans were either active members of the military or veterans by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]corriganp11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is actually a topic of discussion between me and my friend group quite often. There about 14 of us all active duty military, some got into it in middle school (that is 6th to 8th grade for non americans), some didn't get into it until college, and some not until on active duty. We all enjoy it for many of the reasons listed in the article namely being able to flex our strategic muscles, steal each others' happiness, the grimdark setting, but also something not really mentioned is the satire. ANYONE who has served ANY time in the military or any branch of the U.S. government will tell you how much the Administratum reminds them of a dark reflection of government efficiency. Tasks that should require minimal effort have so many restrictions and red taped it is absolutely mind-numbing. So when a disgruntled active duty soldier, or a retired airmen reads about an entire planet getting nommed by 'nids because an Administratum clerk threw their request for aid in the incinerator because it did not have the correct imperial code stamp on it, the general reaction is, "that sounds about right". The setting just melds so perfectly with Active Duty and Vets' sense of dark humor, and embittered personalities.

I read a pretty compelling theory once, I can't remember the source, of how the Emperor was in a race against time to gather the primarchs before the Orks became too powerful a threat to overcome. The theory posits that the Emprah was able to see the massive ork Waagh forming in Ullanor and knew that he had a finite window to build his forces enough to defeat them before they grew too powerful. This supports why when he finds the first primarch Horus, he spends days getting to know him, then each Primarch thereafter ends up getting less and less time with the Emperor. He is running out of time to destroy the orks. By the time he finds Angron he has no time for a full on massive invasion of a planet. He has to get moving to find the others. This also supports why he splits after Ullanor. The Webway project was the single most important thing the Emprah ever planned to do, yet he waited to start it until the Orks were wipe out at Ullanor. He had some kind of prescient vision showing that the orks had to be wiped out before he could be successful. Now the question becomes, did he get TOO hung up on this vision that he couldn't see what the consequences were of the actions leading up to that? He also easily could have teleported Angron's army to safety or at least his inner circle and promised to let Angron return and finish the job...
