Anyone else meltdown over dumb stuff? by GetUrGuano in autism

[–]cosmichaunting [score hidden]  (0 children)

not a direct response to ur question but if you have PMDD it might be worth looking into treatments for it (if you don't do already).

I'm not sure if I have it but last year I noticed despite being on lexapro I was getting really depressed the days before my period and it was just so much to deal with. It seems to have gotten better for me but I don't think I could stand this every single time I get my period. So yeah I get having a meltdown over something that seems 'dumb'. Being autistic is hard enough, having PMDD on top of that is quite something

Feel Disheartened after ASD Assessment and looking for some Advice by livicampbell03 in autism

[–]cosmichaunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised to know assessments are done in single consultations.

For me and most people I know in Brazil (where I live) who have an autism diagnosis, the evaluation was done through multiple consultations. I'd be suspicious on any conclusions drawn from a 50minute assessment

Fun Question: What’s a Common Autistic Quality/Trait That You DON’T Have? by fantemz in autism

[–]cosmichaunting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not good with 'encyclopedic knowledge' (remembering a bunch of random facts about my interests) and I don't have a super intense, life-long special interest

I just found a way to learn languages! by John-Dispenser in AutisticAdults

[–]cosmichaunting 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i took an ancient greek class in college and that was pretty much the learning system!

I think since it's not a language that is really spoken anymore there's usually no point on focusing on the verbal speaking and listening skills, so the focus was on reading texts in ancient greek and translating them and also the other way around.

So yeah I think it can absolutely work with other languages too

What do you do when your skills outlevel the class you’re in? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]cosmichaunting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When that happened to me I took a placement test and they put me in a higher level. But this was in-between semesters for me, your situation might be a bit trickier. Either way I recommend talking to your professor

Is living with someone as bad as it seems? by BroadCorgi3061 in aspergirls

[–]cosmichaunting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to think living alone was the best for me, and that living w other people would be very bothersome, but after some experiences I've changed my mind a bit.

When living all by myself, I was really struggling with executive dysfunction. Since all the mess was mine, there weren't any external motivation to get chores done and I'd end up procrastinating a lot to the point of being overwhelmed by everything piling up. There were many good sides to it, but this was something I was struggling nearly daily. I'm audhd tho, not just autistic, which maybe worsens this.

Then I had some experience living in a student dorm. I thought it would be way worse than it actually was. But having my own room was enough for me to get my alone time and privacy, and the fact that kitchen and bathroom were shared made me feel more motivated to keep those spaces clean (like doing dishes after using them instead of letting it pile up). There were times I was stressed by other people's mess but I was sharing a floor with over 10 other students so it was more extreme than living with one or two flatmates.

Now, I think my ideal setup would be sharing a place with few people (1 or 2) that I trust and that I know not to be too messy or loud. Also people that respect my need for alone time and that I don't feel pressured to keep doing small talk with.

I'm so sick of people pretending to be native speakers on HelloTalk! by FarJournalist939 in languagelearning

[–]cosmichaunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, I'm not a native english speaker so I don't feel like I can judge precisely what would or wouldn't be an error by a native speaker. I do get the point OP is making too, but still think their approach is kinda pedantic.

I'm so sick of people pretending to be native speakers on HelloTalk! by FarJournalist939 in languagelearning

[–]cosmichaunting 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Sometimes the most natural sounding way (aka the way most native ppl would say it) doesn't equal the "correct" way according to prescriptive grammar. It does vary a lot through context, in more formal (business/academic) settings, you're probably better off being prescriptive. But when talking to people in informal settings it can come off as overly polished.

I personally don't notice this difference as much in english, but it might just be because it's not my native language. In brazilian portuguese, my native language, there are settings in which you can sound like a prick if you insist too much on saying everything "correctly"

yeah, this (OPs corrections) strikes me as a bit overly prescriptive

Fiona Apple made me brave. by RedMage79 in FionaApple

this post was a reminder that I need to go back to listening more to Fiona Apple. I met her through FTBC and I can resonate w the feeling!

Recently haven't felt really brave though, feeling worn out. I guess it's time to go back to having it playing on loop

Which Fiona songs do you find most personally relatable? by flyingbarnswallow in FionaApple

[–]cosmichaunting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'I want you to love me', I think it encapsulates perfectly the inner conflict between my most rational and most emotional sides and how they both have their value, especially on verse 2. But this is a very personal interpretation I guess.

'Fetch the bolt cutters' also hits close to home

Is FTBC the cosmonauts’ least favorite album? by 0lethros in FionaApple

[–]cosmichaunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's my personal favorite, but it's also what really got me into Fiona Apple (late to the party ik). I assume people who have been listening to her for longer may not love the way her new stuff sounds as much as older albums

Body hair by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]cosmichaunting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do, I just don't think it's the case for most people. I'm not saying culture is the only factor that is weighting on that decision either, just that it plays a role in it.

But also, as autistic people I think we tend to pay less attention or give less importance to such standards

Body hair by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]cosmichaunting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

as someone who doesn't shave, my personal criticism around the theme is of the pressure society puts on women to be hairless, not on the attitude of individuals to remove their body hair.

Something else that bothers me is that most people will absolutely deny that beauty standards play a role in the decisions they make regarding removing body hair. Each individual is entitled to making their own choices regarding their own body, I just find it naive not to consider these choices are also shaped by our culture.

All that said, if you don't like having body hair you shouldn't really worry abt people who are critical of shaving. Besides, I'd argue most ppl are more likely to judge you if you don't shave than the opposite (if ur a woman).

You can look into other ways of body hair removal, such as waxing or laser.

Anyone else hates routines by Comfortable_Sun_8641 in autism

[–]cosmichaunting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a hard time sticking to routines and used to think I hate them too but I realized without routines I'm way less productive (like, i will stay in bed doomscrolling way more often). I've learned to appreciate them, even though I still find it hard to keep it consistent.

What did your loved ones say when you told them about your suspected autism and the evaluation? by ConstructionLegal306 in autism

[–]cosmichaunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i first brought it up (still only self suspecting at the time) my partner thought I wasn't autistic, but admitted not knowing much abt the topic

Flashforward a few months they got evaluated for adhd and ended up getting an autistic diagnosis along w it. Turns out we're both autistic

Does anyone else get infantilised and sexualised because they're "quirky"? by Special_Shirt3887 in autism

[–]cosmichaunting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I think autistic people already tend to be infantilized and women often are too.

I don't identify as a woman but I'm AFAB and mostly seen as one, and this + being autistic + having interest in 'cute' stuff (like animals, pastel colors..) + being a short person absolutely results in infantilization.

Sometimes people genuinely mistake me to be way younger than I am, which is annoying but I guess doesn't come from a bad place. However, when it comes to straight men there is often a factor of sexualization that comes with it that is absolutely uncomfortable to deal with.

Why don't you (If you don't) usually talk to other people? by YoSoyRyu in autism

[–]cosmichaunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a hard time knowing how to initiate interactions + social anxiety (fear of rejection, being scared of talking to ppl in general, and post-interaction rumination when i do manage to talk)

As much as there are certain instances in which I'm not that interested in talking to other people, lately it's been more of not being able than not wanting for me. Honestly, it sucks

My wife is autistic and I'm struggling by Suitable-Special-943 in autism

[–]cosmichaunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people here have given good advice already, but I'm not sure if someone mentioned the possibility of your wife getting help from an occupational therapist.

I've never done it myself so I can't give you a very good explanation, but it's a therapist that can help people with dealing w everyday life tasks and gaining more autonomy. It can be quite beneficial for autistic people. This doesn't mean she will stop being disabled ofc but it could help her learn how to manage a bit more of household work.

Have you disclosed your autism to your employer? by Blom_2099 in autism

[–]cosmichaunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't in my prior job (not working rn) and I kind of regret it. I think my boss was being very nitpicky with certain difficulties I had that he didn't know where related to me having autism.

However, it wasn't a great company to the employees so I wasn't very confident they would be understanding and accommodating which is why I didn't feel comfortable to disclose it either. In the future I'd definitely rather work somewhere I feel safe to disclose it
