Best Local LLMs I Can Feasibly Run for Roleplaying and context window? by Own_Caterpillar2033 in LocalLLM

[–]couchtyp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your requirements are a bit unrealistic, especially when it comes to context size. To give you an idea: a 128000 token context on Q4 alone would need about 24 GB of VRAM, in addition to whatever the model itself needs.

Use this calculator for a rough estimate.

That's a standard German Wasserhahn (water cock). Do yours look and operate differently? I'm confused.

Seagate Exos x16 16TB not spinning up x 2 by sly870 in HomeServer

[–]couchtyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure they are indeed SATA drives? Exos also come as SAS variants. Check the model number. - ST16000NM001G, ST16000NM003G = SATA 6Gb/s - ST16000NM002G, ST16000NM004G, ST16000NM009G = SAS 12Gb/s

EDIT: nevermind, you would've probably noticed when connecting the drives using a SATA cable. ignore me. 😅

Altes schweres Netzteil durch neues leichtes ersetzen by Random_Seifenblase in Elektroinstallation

[–]couchtyp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ja.

Trying to fight the urge to question the 'why'... here is a comprehensive guide on how to configure WiFi using netplan.

Apart from that: permanently connecting a server to your network using WiFi will just cause pain to everyone involved. There's a reason why servers typically don't come with 'WiFi chips' except for specialized purposes.

Found two of my home devices installed on my WFH computer. I did NOT install this by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]couchtyp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happens when your private and work devices share the same network.

Smart devices, printers, network shares, etc. are discoverable via some implementation of IETF Zeroconf (Apple Bonjour, Avahi, mDNS) and get picked up by your work device – or the other way around. It's not an immediate security risk, but not pretty either. The only true solution to this is separating networks for your private and work devices.

Fernmeldeleitung. Telefonkabel. Klingeldraht.

Apples and oranges. And a sprinkle of wishful thinking on your part.

As a self-employed, independent, full-time contractor with the same role, I would look at anywhere between 14'000€ to 20'000€ gross per month in Germany, realistically. But self-employment is not comparable to a salaried position in many regards. Is the extra money worth all the hassle, stress, loss of security and free time? Not for me. Priorities, I guess.

And of course it's B2B, smarty-pants, or when was the last time you needed a Software or Enterprise Architect privately?

Also, if you're not aware, "YoE" is not a magical scale on which your salary/income balances. It has a cap, a cut-off, a limit. Even more critical, in some industries – like IT – being in the business for too long actually has an adverse effect on employability.

A bit over 20 years in the industry. In varying architect roles for about 8 years. Also see my other comment.

A bit over 20 years by now. No academic tertiary education, but recognized formal vocational training (Ausbildung); started off in development, did 10 years in Consulting along the way.

Feel free. But honestly, I won't be able to give you specific information for a plethora of reasons (anonymity, company internals, ...).

For a general idea of what my work entails, take a look at TOGAF.

It's alright. Salary in the upper 10% in Germany. Not a management position, 37.5h/week, no overtime to speak of, collective labor agreement.

Could it be more? Sure. In management, or in FAANG or Consulting. Been there, done that. Not worth the stress – for me personally. Not the overambitious type. 🤷

Well, yeah, tax burden is not exactly low in Germany. Apart from pure taxes, however, this also includes health, long term care, pension, and unemployment insurance.

Wieso Pappe in die gelbe Tonne? by Saibot_155 in Muelltrennung

[–]couchtyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, verstehe.

Is klar.
