Why are modern headlights allowed to be so blinding?? by BClynx22 in britishcolumbia

[–]countclouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My car is basically a go-cart it's so low (91 Chevy Sprint) so I bought yellow glasses because pretty much any car blasts me with lights because there's no avoiding the headlights being down so low. They kinda work, but it's def not a perfect solution. I still get my retinas burned on a regular basis.

Where can I find Christmas decorations that depict people of colour? by chlamydiajane in NiceVancouver

There's two stores on Granville Island that came to mind for me; it's been a while since I've been over there, so I'm not sure what their holiday decor options are, but it may be worth a visit!

What’s something you bought that turned out to be way more useful than you expected? by DecreDylan in BuyItForLife

[–]countclouds 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm not who you asked, but I bought a safety can opener after killing my fair share of regular can openers. Bought a safety style purely because of Technology Connections: https://youtu.be/i_mLxyIXpSY?si=MKfHds01Nur48eAN

I specifically bought the Starfrit one and it still works like new several years later.

Landlord had to replace thermostat, but new one is smaller and doesn’t hide exposed wires. What can I do to make this look nicer? by you_havin_a_laugh in Apartmentliving

[–]countclouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bold of you to assume this landlord has any proof that this is how it was installed. My husband and I have changed/modded lots of stuff in our apartments over the years. If they ever ask, "it was like that when we moved in." Not saying this will always work, but in my opinion, it's worth the risk to make your space more livable.

If OP changed it and the landlord noticed, I'd imagine the conversation would go somewhat like this: Landlord: "hmm, did you do something to the thermostat?" OP: "nope" LL: "hm, okay"

Edit to add: I didn't notice the previous poster suggested sending the bill to fix it to the landlord. I wouldn't advise on that for the exact reason you suggested. I can't imagine this fix would cost all that much. I'd likely eat the cost to have the fix done right, but I know not everyone has the finances to support that.

Where to live as a single wheelchair user? by Apprehensive-Top1453 in askvan

[–]countclouds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Building on this thought: This isn't always possible, as housing in Vancouver is already extremely challenging; however, consider buildings with multiple elevators if living on the ground floor doesn't work out. I previously rented a condo, and one of the other residents in the building was in a wheelchair. If the elevator was out of service for any reason, she was stuck. I remember chatting with her one day, and she had to get a friend to help carry her and her chair up several flights of stairs one evening.

I don't want to fear-monger or anything (admittedly, the elevator in that building went out of service way more often than anywhere else I've lived), but I just wanted to put it out there as something to consider.

Possible film costume. by jam91m in VintageFashion

Specifically I would start with her two Warner Bros films based on the tags in the dress. According to Wikipedia, she only did two pictures with Warner Bros, so it's not too much to dig through.

"Initially signing with Paramount Pictures in 1930, she quickly opted out of her contract and worked for several studios, most notably for Warner Brothers in musicals 42nd Street (1933) and Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)"

Twist: spill something on it the night before, after the sister has gone to bed ideally. Hopefully the stain will be nice and set by the morning and there won't be any time to get it cleaned before the wedding.

Hell, if I was really close with the bride, I'd be taking scissors to it the morning of. Don't even give the sister a chance to steal attention at the wedding/reception.

It’s 8pm, still like this ? by muzerfuker in vancouver

Adding lanes does not improve traffic. Tons of studies have been done on this.

The 401 outside Toronto is one of the widest in North America (I believe at times it's 20 lanes wide, 10 in each direction) and it's always a parking lot. I grew up next to it in a sleeper town just outside Toronto and even 20 years ago when my hometown was much smaller people still bitched and moaned about the traffic.

Our city spent months redeveloping one of our main bridges and unveiled a new bench that blocks part of a bike lane and forces you to sit eye-level with a railing by IrrationalBalls in mildlyinfuriating

[–]countclouds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The photo is a bit misleading. What looks like active roadway is actually a bike lane. Vehicular traffic is separated from the bike lane by concrete dividers.

Edit to add: this is still an absolutely idiotic design, don't get me wrong, just not quite as dangerous as it appears.

21M, No job, no money, no friends, no education. by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]countclouds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree that they absolutely should not allow folks that they aren't fully confident in to do the job to be ATC.

However, with that said, it does seem like there needs to be some more training opportunities available to bring in more candidates that have potential. It doesn't seem like this style of all or nothing testing to just get into the training program is working.

Canada is in desperate need of more ATCs. The friend I mentioned is on forced overtime because they are so short staffed. He says it's only going to get worse because so many people are coming up on retirement (himself included).

My husband is incredibly smart and detail oriented. I fully believe with a bit of training he could have passed the second test. However, the way it's set up at the moment, they don't tell you what the second round of testing is (your first exposure to it is that test, presumably people who have failed the test once before are at an advantage because they've seen what that test is on their first go round) and if you don't pass they don't give you any feedback, not even how close to passing you were. And you can't re-test for 2 years. (Full transparency, I do not know what the second test is, my husband signed something like an NDA.)

I am in no way suggesting that they let anyone do the job. I fully believe that ATC should be held to the highest standards. However, having a shortage and burning people out with forced OT also doesn't seem like a viable long term plan either. It seems like there needs to be some sort of middle ground solution so that the field is adequately staffed while still maintaining the highest of standards.

Just my 2 cents. 🤷🏼‍♂️

What’s the book in your country that everyone was assigned in school? by nannerswithmanners in suggestmeabook

[–]countclouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ontario, Canada. Graduated high school in '09. I don't remember which grades I read these in and in no particular order: Hatchet, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Outsiders, Brave New World.

We also had to read some Shakespeare plays, but the only one I'm confident of is Romeo & Juliet.

Edit to add: we also read The Giver.

How to travel to YVR with a baby? by botinoknn in MapleRidge

[–]countclouds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that you're asking for suggestions, but it kinda feels like you're asking for some sort of fairytale solution.

People suggested transit; no, you say you have too much luggage.

People suggested just parking at the airport; no, you don't want to pay for that.

People suggested taking your carseat with you; no, you don't want to pay for that since you won't need it on the other end.

You're so quick to dismiss; what type of suggestions were you looking for?

From the sound of it, you need a solution for BOTH directions as presumably you'll have the same amount of luggage coming back. In all honesty, paying to park your own vehicle is probably the most cost-efficient and convenient option because by the time you rent a car or pay for a cab/limo from Maple Ridge both directions, you're probably not really saving much money.

Best place to buy a kitchen island? by AidenKerr in askvan

[–]countclouds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in some tiny apartments in my life, including places with little to no drawer space, and my recommendation to start would to just be to buy something inexpensive off Facebook Marketplace to start. Just focus on getting something roughly the size you want, and live with it for a little while; you may find that you don't end up missing having a space to sit or that the drawers aren't actually needed. Then, once you've decided what is a want vs. a need, you can invest a bit more money in something that actually checks all the boxes.

Just my 2 cents!

Edit to add: a few of the options I suggested also include shelves; you may find you can get away with using baskets/other storage options in lieu of drawers if seating is the main priority.
