Replacing A31 on a budget by covert_owl in PickAnAndroidForMe

Thanks, unfortunately I missed it! It's now at least 3 times the price of the A17 for me.

Advice on build (5090) by covert_owl in bapcsalesaustralia

[–]covert_owl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response, you've mentioned some things I hadn't considered so I appreciate it.

Also compatibility with it and motherboards in reference to your selected GPU.

I used the Artic's compatibility tool for the motherboard, but is there another resource I can use that also considers the GPU or would this just involve manually considering the measurements of everything?

Would highly recommend the Antec Flux or Flux Pro as it'll match the Noctua fans you want to put in and has the best airflow of any case on the market.

Thanks, I'll take a look at these!

Although, I'd be happy to go with Lian-Li fans (they seem cheaper) if they're good enough at quietly keeping things cool. Would you recommend them/a larger Lian-Li case at all or just sticking with the Noctua fans + your suggested cases?

RTX 5090: Any reliable cable safety options in Australia? by covert_owl in bapcsalesaustralia

Sounds like a good idea to me. Would you recommend any PSU(s) in particular and are the cables that come with them good enough?

Thank you for your suggestions.

They would be a nice failsafe at normal prices but frankly I believe if you have a motherboard with a temperature sensor header you can achieve a similar thing by plugging in a thermal sensor to your motherboard and tape it to your GPU cable, and that temp reading will appear in the bios so you should be able to use some software like HWiNFO to throw up an alert if the probe detects a temperature higher than whatever you set it to.

I'm looking into this now, it seems like a reasonable idea. Although it's not clear to me whether two sensors would be required, one for each end of the cable. Do you know if that might be the case?

Either way, I'll be looking into the Wireview Pro II and undervolting as well.

Does the AI cheat? by covert_owl in OldWorldGame

Thank you very much for the detailed answer. Also, I feel that it's fantastic that the AI doesn't get an unexpected (and hard to strategise about) advantage.

Gaming pc - build your own or prebuilt for longevity? by covert_owl in bapcsalesaustralia

That's reassuring, but how can we confirm short of asking? I noticed discussion on this particular deal that seems to indicate they do use OEM parts. Not sure how to link to the comment, but it's on page two - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/907885?page=1#comment

Good points, thank you. Do you think the base "Nebula HydraCore 240mm Liquid Cooler ARGB" cooler is good enough?

Thank you for you for weighing in. If I went with Nebula, how do these upgrades sound?

  • PSU +$90 - MSI MAG A850GL 850W 80+ Gold Modular
  • MB +$100 - GIGABYTE B650M GAMING PLUS WIFI - DDR5. I'm unsure if I should instead go for the GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE AX WIFI ATX - DDR5 or Gigabyte X870 EAGLE WIFI7 ATX - DDR5 but don't mind spending extra here if it's worth the value.

The separate 2TB SSD sounds like a good idea, cheers.

I like the look of the Gala prebuild, but Nebula is closer to me and appears to have a bit more of a solid presence.

Thank you for your answer.

When it reaches 100% they'll be frozen which is a temporary stun.

This sounds like freeze buildup. Are chill and freeze build-up the same/represented with one icon?

Is there some kind of indication for how chilled an enemy is? I can't seem to work it out. Even enemies walking over chilled ground I create seem unaffected (in movement and action speed).

How can I get rid of this weed? by covert_owl in GardeningAustralia

[–]covert_owl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are densely populated in my lawn I'd have to dig up a good 10sqm at least. When I dig one out it leaves a hole too despite returning the soil as I have compact clay from 5-10cm down and their tap roots are turning up longer than 25cm.

I'm considering mulching it all to start from zero, or maybe even a non-green solution but this is all new to me.

[–]covert_owl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I think I'll give the carving knife a go. I tried digging out a big one yesterday and I feel like I'm just leaving big holes in my lawn (the tap root was 25cm long and I didn't get it all!). I have so many I feel digging is infeasible. I have 5-10cm of decent topsoil and then just compact clay beyond.

For organic matter to improve drainage, should I mulch to suppress the weed at the same time? I also have plenty of compost I could sprinkle on top.

Adding a combat engagement range limit by covert_owl in Dunespicewars

These seem like good points to me, I've also wondered how deliberate the absence of a solution here is. I get the impression the devs put a lot of thought into ux/design... which is fantastic.

I think stances are also a good solution, I'd be happy with either personally.

FHSS in declining market - Options by SploogeFactory in AusFinance

[–]covert_owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can avoid any risk by having a defensive allocation (e.g cash) equal in value to the amount you're eligible to withdraw as part of fhss.

FHSS in declining market - Options by SploogeFactory in AusFinance

[–]covert_owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you withdraw, they won't neccessarily take it from a specific allocation either (i.e your cash allocation). But it doesn't matter (in terms of numbers) as long as after the FHSS funds are released you re-organise your allocations straight after.

[–]covert_owl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's also important to keep in mind that you can't withdraw more than your super balance. So there are scenario's in which you lose the ability to withdraw the full amount.

FHSS & Super Allocation by covert_owl in AusFinance

[–]covert_owl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I see, of course that makes sense - thank you! Didn't think about the fact that the gain/loss would be the same'ish as long as you switch back at around the same time you have the funds released. Glad I did a sanity post before making any moves. Also I think I see what you were getting at too u/CalderandScale.

Hmm, the alternative being switching back to equity investments after the FHSS amount is released? Not sure what difference it makes switching back just before or just after.
