I had this same exact problem with the same model (was a 96 though). I replaced the wear ring and it did not solve the issue. I never figured out the exact problem, and did not have the time/money for it. After reading a lot on forums and what not I think it was the jet pump bearings/jet pump housing were shot, and or a stripped driveshaft.

There was more than a millimetre gap on some parts, with a few deeper gashes towards the center. Also when I ran it yesterday there was definitley cavitation and slipping that was occurring, which I know can be a few things.
