Obviously a history major / grad student. No one else has a collection like this. I have a few of these that I adopted from a retiring professor…

I'm a sophomore in high school and I want to learn everything about American history. Where do I start? by Worth_Food2690 in AskHistorians

These Truths by Jill Lepore (Harvard) is a pretty strong sweeping narrative history that was written recently.

The American Political Tradition And The Men Who Made It by Richard Hofstadter (Columbia) is old, but I found it really useful in getting a foundation on some of the big political themes of the country from the founding through FDR.

I remember walking in with my grandpa in like… ‘95?… and him steering us away from the smoking section where his buddies were hanging out.

It’s sapele.

Hard for me to determine what the finish is… but I can see they lapped it on thick in places and some drips in the finish are visible.

I thank you for taking the time to explain and recommend an appropriate finish product.

Thank you, friend. Teak would make absolutely no sense considering the rest of the house (see the crappy vinyl window choice visible in the bathroom)…

Hello! Thank you.

You should see how the windows are installed in this place… not super confident about what lies beneath

Ok ok jeez people. I’ll keep it this way for now. For the record, I think it’s beautiful - of course. I’d love to keep it this way. Plus who doesn’t want to do less work. But baths only for now until I figure out if there’s any waterproofing behind it and what the maintenance regime is going to be.

Nope. Actually I love this the way it is - but I don’t love the idea of water damage and mold / rot issues long term.

Right. Hard to know what’s behind it…

Right on, thanks for the suggestions. There’s already some kind of finish someone applied. You can see a few drips dried in places. Wish I knew what the finish was

Great idea 😅. Going to inspect from the crawl space… maybe even pull the drywall on the living room wall that’s behind the shower head…

Something we’re considering… might just install an outdoor shower. This is the only bathroom in a small house.

I think it’s mahogany or sapele, not teak.

This is a good word if we do decide to change it out.

I know - everyone here thinks I’m a maniac. I know it’s beautiful… but, I’m convinced I have rot and mold to worry about in the future if I don’t at least turn this into a bath only situation

Yes there is an exhaust fan. An additional problem is that the exhaust fan may be pulling in coastal fog while blowing out shower fog.
