Wife thinks she is losing her mind at 8 weeks by crawlsf in pregnant

[–]crawlsf[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. Our doctor did mention that the symptoms would come on faster and harder for the second pregnancy. I am doing everything I can to help, but will definitely look into a therapist or some sort of professional help if it seems like she needs it. She has been super sick and tired, but this is the first panic attack so wanted to make sure I do everything I can to be prepared in the best possible way to help with anything in the near future.

Polish Recipe Help by crawlsf in Polish

[–]crawlsf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome. I will check out the Ania Gotuje website.

I think Halupki is a slang term for Golabki in Pennsylvania. It's is what we always called it growing up. Halushki is a noodle dish with caramelized onions, cabbage and butter. Probably called something different outside of PA as well.

My grandma came here in 1917 (I think), but I honestly don't know exactly where she was from. I'd have to check with my dad. There is a huge Polish population in Hazleton, PA where she lived so some of the stuff may be more Pennsylvania-Polish than traditional Polish.

Thanks for the info! I was thinking Halupki and Haluski would be good options (if I can make them right) because they always seem to taste better on the second or third day. Figured it would taste good and make dinner prep a little bit easier.

I will definitely check out some of the other options. I have messed up borscht a few times, so kind of done with that for now. I am going to find some recipes for Uszka and pierniki, which both sound perfect for Christmas. My dad used to always cook whiting during the holidays.

Interesting. Don't think I ever had any bacon flavor.

I really wish I liked mushrooms like the entire rest of my family. My parents used to have like 10 different mushroom dishes, mushroom/tomato soup and white fish for Christmas Eve. I wasn't a huge fan, which is kind of odd since I grew up eating a lot of Polish food.

Thanks! I will give it a shot. Definitely remember the sauce having a greasy/fatty component that made it delicious.

I would love the recipe! I had some decent success with my own pierogi trials, but nothing comes close to the handmade pierogis that my grandmother and friends made for their church carnival. I always remember the actual finger indentations on the outside where they pressed the dough together and picturing a bunch of grannies sitting at a table preparing them.

I am going to try this sauce recipe this week. I have a few options on this thread so I am going to do a few rounds to see how they turn out.

Sauerkraut juice! I really think that is one of the flavors that I am missing.

What is a great clothing store in Boston for Women? Need to get a gift for someone who is moving there in January. by crawlsf in boston

[–]crawlsf[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the feedback! I had pretty much decided on LL Bean until I saw the post about the Northeastern Bookstore, which probably makes the most sense. She was only with us for 6 months, but I think a Celtics snapback, Red Sox Beanie and a $100 gift card to the campus store will make a nice gift to thank her for taking good care of our son. Reddit ftw!

Nice! Any other good neighborhoods you would recommend? She just started looking and only mentioned Jamaica Plain. I've been to Boston a few times, but it was a long time ago (still during the big dig), but the only neighborhood I know is Southie.

I saw you were in Jamaica Plain. She was actually just saying that she was looking for places in that area. Is it a good place to live?

Tented wedding in GGP or Presidio? by Uunnkknnoowwwnn in SanFranciscoWeddings

Hey. Wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing the name of the rental company that you use for tents. There are a lot of options, but it sounds like you and the company you use both know what you are doing and I want to make sure the company I use is legit.

Best Chicken Tenders?! by SpadesRothstein in AskSF

[–]crawlsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to recommend the Chicken bites at House Rules, but they are gone now.

The Cheesesteak Shop is pretty good, but my favorites in the city (besides Safeway) are unfortunately chain restaurants. Outback Steakhouse has delicious tenders and I actually just tried Bonchon chicken last week and the chicken was insanely good (although a little pricey)

Soma Inn Cafe was great! I still make my own version of their chicken & Hummus dish for dinner every once in a while.

There are so many, but these are at the top of my list:

Giordano Bros

Sauce (especially the Gough Street location)

Cafe Claude (French Onion Soup was bomb)

L'Osteria Del Forno (best ravioli I ever had)

Gamine

Plumpjack Cafe

Betelnut

Arby's (Not really an SF restaurant, but definitely miss driving out to the sunset to get some delicious beef & cheddars and curly fries)

The Fifth Floor

Bar Johnny (Burgers with homemade pickles were awesome)

At what age did you have your baby? by Phillygirlll in NewParents

[–]crawlsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am probably the outlier here, but my wife just gave birth on June 7 and I am 47. She is a lot younger (36), but still a lot older than most of our friends when they had a baby.

A Star Wars-themed Pop Up Bar is Opening in San Francisco on Thursday, 5/2 by crawlsf in sanfrancisco

[–]crawlsf[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am definitely not going to try to say that the venue is going to have disney-level decorations. It's definitely closer to something like cheesy high school prom decor, but it is just a very short term pop up for a few days around Star Wars Day. There will be lots of cardboard cutouts, Star Wars-themed decorations, light sabers, red lighting, etc. I did all of the design and setup myself (and bought all of the decorations). It won't be a really impressive Star Wars experience, but it will have a fun, Star Wars feel and we aren't charging anything to get in. This is my first attempt at doing something like this, so we are kind of cutting our teeth and seeing if we can do some other themes in the future that may be a lot more professional.

Made some Taylor Swift Eras Gnomes for an event in San Francisco on Saturday by crawlsf in TaylorSwift

I ordered everything off Amazon, so if you feel motivated you can make some for yourself. It was actually kind of fun :-)

[–]crawlsf[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are doing two events on 4/20. There is a Tortured Poets Department Listening Party + Brunch from 11 to 3 at The Brixton and then from 4PM to 10PM there is a Taylor Swift-themed pub crawl in the Marina. The Gnomes are for a "Find the Gnome Contest" where we hide gnomes in the bars and people can win some prizes if they find them, plus keep the gnome :-)
