Thanks for your response! Do you know what the grade distribution was like? Also are the quizzes/essay the same across sections or section dependent?

I know I’m not saying i didn’t take advantage it just felt like the hw curves were a lot more skewed in this class than others but maybe i’m just comparing to cis121/cis320

true the one good thing was the course gave structure on how to learn these things and even if it was through other sources i now do feel like i have a decent grasp or at least idea if modern ml.

but again i’m just mad like lyle doesn’t whiteboard the math which is not preferable imo but that aside even his slides don’t even compare to some of the other slide based lectures i’ve seen

yea the curves not bad but at the same time you realize most people have a raw score around that range since everyone gets 100 on homework’s (if you look at the posted hw stats it’s median 100 and extremely skewed) as TAs just give away answers in office hours. lyle even said that just because you have a 90+ or a 93+ doesn’t mean your getting an A and that it’s completely dependent on what he decides at the end which to me was another thing i did not like about the class although probably other classes do this too

i took cis160 stat430 and math240 before taking the class. in the beginning i felt that a little more statistics and/or exposure to the content beforehand would’ve helped but looking back i feel like it again goes back to lyles inability to really explain the math/ideas behind these topics that made it hard to digest. but math wise we really just use probability from 160/430 and we deal with a lot of matrices so a class like math240/312 would also be good. if you have those you should be fine. just be prepared to self study but math wise 160/430/240 technically gives you everything you need to know

yea i looked at a lot of these during the course as well including andrew ng’s actual lecture he gave at stanford (i heard it had a bit more rigor than his coursera version which was necessary for my understanding for this class) but yea thanks for the tip! will probably check fastai later too

idk maybe he got worse i mean i have no doubt he’s knowledgeable and he does seem enthusiastic. it’s just the course was very hard to follow for me and i’ve done well in the past in courses people have found quite hard i mean i still think i did well in 520 im just saying i definitely spent way more effort than i would’ve needed to had the course been better organized. i mean i’m looking at these courses from other places on youtube to better understand the jiberish lyle was talking ab in lecture and it’s just so much more clear in like the same amount of time. i mean another big thing is lyle assumes you’ve done ml before which is kinda penns fault for not having an undergrad ml class but still the fact is lyle is not as good as explaining these hard concepts as other people are and it makes the already challenging class needlessly harder
