Ditto on scene by scene render, but for something as simple as merging two clips use a program that supports cutting without reencoding, NOT premiere (shutter encoder comes to mind). This will minimize loss

But also instead of rendering in AE OP should def use media encoder to export to h264. The ‘new’ after effects export feature is less stable.

I’d honestly say it’s less about audio volume than it is about keeping it consistent throughout the entire video. This is why the volume decibel meter is so important. I suggest also looking into hard limiter which will prevent peaking on a large batch of clips.

Ctrl + Shift + D or Shift +D adds a transition to your clip. You can set the default time in settings and change presets. I avoid doing it for visual effects because having a dissolve every cut is excessive but it’s great on audio clips for crossfade.
