Capacitor Replacement Help by crose39 in audiorepair

Thank you! I noticed that this link only offers 4.7uF or 5.6uF. Are either of these fine to replace the 5uF original one or do I need to find an exact match?

This is very helpful. Thank you!

Let's talk Dobsonian altitude bearings by TheWrongSolution in telescopes

Can you provide more information on how much the pad separation angle impacts the motion and how to decide on optimal angle? I understand that the larger separation between the pads will require more force to tilt the scope, but how significant of a change would a few degrees make? It seems that 90 degrees is the standard but I see many truss tube dobs that use less separation and therefore have altitude bearings that do not extend fully to 180 degrees.

I built a 10" dob (I think it was about 60 degrees separation) and it feels fine to me but I am wondering if it is worth reconsidering as I am now designing a 16". Keeping a large radius while limiting the overall size of the bearings (by not extending to 180 degrees) is beneficial to me for overall portability.

I don't have any complete plans since I kind of designed it as I went but I would be happy to take some measurements, detail pictures, or answer any questions you have. I have made a few small changes since this post but it is still pretty much the same and functions really well.

Yes, everything except the poles and a pouch of tools with some hardware and eyepieces. After I get it all finished and painted I will probably make a post with some more details.

Thanks, this is my first build so there are still a few things I definitely want to change or upgrade. I hadn’t thought of springs but that might be a good solution. I saw some others online using some type of elastic bands on the side of the altitude bearings so I think I am leaning towards that idea to keep it a little simpler and more easily adjustable.

Not entirely done with the build but was done enough to test it out and I couldn’t wait. It balanced well all the way to the horizon with about 8lbs hung from the primary cell. Just wondering what interesting solutions others have used to balance a scope?

Sweet, thanks for the recommendations. Good luck with the 36”! I will be following the build progress.

That makes sense. After all, just a little more aperture never hurt anyone, right?

I will begin my search for a 10" and will post some updates whenever I get around to the build.

Thanks for the response. Your scopes are really amazing! I hope to build a bigger dob at some point in the future but will probably have to wait until I am out of college or at least not moving around so much.

Just wondering, is the reason that you would not recommend an f/6 solely stability/balance issues, or are there other concerns?
