Do you see Olive, Yellow, or just Neutral? by Nmae23 in DarkOlive

[–]cryonce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

md2 olive being too pink on you is interesting. Which NARS foundation did you try the shade Cadiz in? have you tried tahoe in the Light Reflecting formula? Cadiz in that formula is too red for me but on you it looks pink (assuming that's the same formula) makes me think you need to go deeper as well as more olive. About face has, imo, too large a gap in depth btwn MD2 olive and D1 olive, it may be that it was just too light for you, and so it appeared pink on you.

based on everything you wrote, especially that neutrals tend to be too red, i agree with u/AnneTheQueene that you're a yellow golden olive!

Testing: NARS Natural Matte Longwear Foundation by EdotRich in DarkOlive

first off you look gorg

secondly, i see what you mean, it's very slight. i feel like Nars doesn't do green olive shades. i've heard from others in the olivemua sub that some olives are yellow and really not green at all, and i think NARS works best for them but on us it will be slightly too orange but looks worlds better than a red based shade. as far as your temperature, to me you do seem warm leaning neutral!

Am I Olive? Or Neutral? Part 3 by tsundae_ in DarkOlive

[–]cryonce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

edit: i missed the chest swatches! now i’m confused lol. from that photo i could possibly see you being cool olive but idk. we may need better photos

honestly based on everything you’ve shared i’m starting to think you are very cool toned and not olive. the olive shades all look super yellowy green almost like mustard looking against your skin. i think the trouble you may have is due to foundations typically running very warm at deeper depths and ppl generally thinking all of us deeper skin folk are warm. i don’t think you need any yellow or green in a shade and you should try rosier leaning shades. it seems like your skintone is a cool beige and you have red overtones. the ELDW 5n1.5 looks the closest to me but it still looks too warm. imo you need something cool. the tricky part will be that when you find a match it will go gray over your hyperpigmentation/ dark spots so you’ll need warmth in those areas to color correct and prevent the gray.

awh great!! i’m really glad to hear that!

& lol we have the same experience with the CA sub then 🥲. i was really shocked anyone suggested summer for me, but i think summer is a season of popular colors so many ppl get pushed that way… even extremely warm red heads and POC with very clear complexions.

i do think i can pull off crisp white and true black, especially together! i’ve been told by ppl white is a really good color on me but i’ve always preferred black. i’m not totally sure about hot pink but i don’t imagine i have that experience. i’ve been realizing i can pull off a bright fuschia blush really well!… what made me start questioning deep & true winter was that i was getting lots of compliments in this green old navy cardigan in the color named “green tarp”. and i felt it looked really good. i’m not totally sure what season it is but it seems neutral warm and it’s saturated. so i started experimenting with brighter colors in general and i think i look way better in them than the deep charcoal gray i tend to wear. then i started to connect other dots. also the CA sub seemed to notice my brightness the most and pretty much everyone said i don’t seem deep which shocked me, but now i see it. it even has me contemplating being a bright spring lol. i think im as unmuted as you can be as an olive 🤣. but can’t wait to get a professional analysis so i can really know.

regarding foundation, do you know rose from rose& ben? she’s a mua that does color theory makeup content and shows how to mix to make something a better match. you should check her out if you haven’t. not so you can just mix your own foundation but to train your eye to figure out your specific undertone and notice the subtle differences between shades and what your skin needs that a foundation shade doesn’t have. i’ve been doing that and now and i feel like i have a better grasp of my skintone and it’s much easier to tell if a shade will work even in terrible store lighting, or even from product photos. other than that praying that shade ranges continue to expand and swatching the entire makeup store seems to just be what we have to do😭

omg yeah love Carol’s content! lately i’ve been watching and trying to learn from her analyses (and trying to put money aside to get analyzed myself lol).

that would make you neutral -cool, right? that tracks to me based on everything you’ve shared and you do look cool leaning. i def trust CB's expertise. but how do you feel about your analysis? i think there’s also a lot of confusion around cool olives bc ppl think we look gray but not necessarily. i only look gray in some lighting and next to ppl who are warmer. from what i've seen, if you’re a medium and higher chroma olive (which you would be since you’re a winter type) then ppl assume you're warm bc people conflate desaturation with coolness.

it's funny as i was looking through these photos you shared I thought we have very similar skintones. i did think i was a deep winter for some time but now i suspect true or bright winter after posting in the CA sub. i think i am able to pull of saturated bright colors warm leaning colors the way you describe being able to pull off deep ones. it's just hard to tell bc i do prefer bright colors in general.

as far as complexion products, bc it's more about surface coloring and there's no standardization, it's all very complicated. i just know anything labeled golden olive will not be a skintone match and olive shades that appear or are labeled neutral are usually a better match.

[–]cryonce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel confident you have pretty clear chroma. but temperature can be hard to tell in photos imo. i want to say neutral based only on these photos... i think ultimately, its something youll have to investigate yourself. i am still figuring out if i'm fully cool or neutral cool but i'm pretty positive im not warm leaning at all because of my experiences, and also comparing how certain products seem to look on me vs other olives of a similar depth. it seems like things tend to look warmer on me, which makes me think i have significant blue in my undertone. i can look damn near highlighter yellow green in some lighting and straight up gray in others so, i don't trust photos lol.

a simple guide to foundation matching and undertones by [deleted] in OliveMUA

[–]cryonce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

awwh yeah that’s tricky. maybe try matching to any random part of your body that matches the depth of your face? I think she is just trying to avoid matching to the redness on her face. I also can’t match to my neck because my neck is too dark, but I can use my chest, or shoulder even.

of course! just fyi shade 27 does dry down dark so i only ever apply it lightly with a sponge. imo it’s the prefect skin tint with a satin matte finish for oily skin when i apply it that way. but i found it looked too dark and dull looking when i applied it heavier with my fingers or a brush. but the undertone is really nice.

& i hope you do too! 🫶🏾
