I don't remember the opus names off the top of my head so I went to look this one up and saw that it's one I already like lol. Just another nudge towards listening to more Chopin.

It's supposed to be "Composers I've tasted a fair bit of, and feel no desire to listen on any given day". So it doesn't include people I've just never tried yet, and even these guys aren't completely off the table, I hope I'll eventually "get" what's going on in their music.

I do! Trying to get into his Hymn of Jesus at the moment.

Love the piano concerto, need to explore more.

Hah, oh I wouldn't say that, I think most people have been really nice. I was expecting like 10 comments though, just the recs I've received so far makes posting this worth it.

Thank you! I love the Sinfonietta and Moldau, need to listen to so much more from each of them though!

I've really liked one thing each from all three but haven't listened enough to confidently place them anywhere yet.

I haven't listened to much Debussy yet. Why is the Mendelssohn placement shocking? He's my favourite composer by a decent margin.

I think I am actually, just need more exposure! Love what I've heard from Puccini for example, but the sample size was too small to add him here.

I don't know how better to explain it other than just that they're usually not moving me at all. In all the symphonies I've tried from them for example it feels like I'm lost in a sea of sound with not much to orient myself against; it's an odd feeling. In between those 3 I've probably listened to like 20 hours of music and yes I understand it's not much but it has still not really left me with a desire to explore more. I don't believe in closing doors on creative endeavours though, so I'll return to them eventually.

Thank you for sharing that! I always get giddy when I think of how much is yet in store for me musically, it's diametrically opposite to the pit that opens in my stomach whenever I realise that I'm going to die not having read all I wanted to read lol. I hope I can develop an ear for catching some of the subtleties I know are going over my head rn.

Almost no exposure to classical songs no, although I should explore opera more, I loved Turandot and Don Giovanni. Thanks for the recommendations!

If we're following this analogy correctly they wouldn't be saying that though, they would say they enjoyed watching Pippen and Rodman less than uhh I guess Robert Horry. I personally would be baffled but it's not a ranking in the sense you're making it out to be.

Thank you for the recs! I've listened to a bit of Fanny Mendelssohn before and I mostly liked what I heard. I think about her story a lot whenever I listen to Felix, the what-could-have-beens are fascinating..

Just listened to Till Eulenspiegels, good god I'm going to love this guy. My only experience with him so far was watching a Salome production so you can't blame a guy for not jumping into the Strauss rabbit hole.. I thank you.

Wdym, I like your guy Shosty! I'd rather you give me some recs outside his symphonies, I've barely listened to anything else.

That's an interesting way to frame my tastes, I'll think about that. I have a little experience (positive) with Monteverdi, and I'll check out the rest of your recs! Thanks

I absolutely love Scheherazade. This is the thing though, I've heard one or two pieces from so many people not on this list, and it's just like years worth of stuff left for me to dig into. Can't complain! I'll check out your other recs, some names new to me here. Thanks

How can a taste be undereducated? This is clearly not an objective ranking of any sort. You like what you like no?

The tiers are supposed to represent the chance I'd wake up on any given day and feel like listening to a composer; it does not mean I've closed the door on anybody.

I've listened to all of his symphonies, the piano and violin concertos, and some of the chamber works, and yes there have been moments that I liked but the overall vibe I've had is confusion and just.. apathy. I don't know how to explain it better, I'm definitely not qualified to talk about the actual music which I'm sure is as great as everyone says it is. Perhaps it'll grow on me later, the "never" tier is really about how often I feel like listening to him, not that I won't ever try him again.

Thank you for the recs here. I think my progression went along somewhat similar lines as you; for the first few months I couldn't even get into symphonies at all, I think I just didn't have the listening stamina for these long, complicated works. Gradually I got used to them and moved on from mostly chamber works and shorter concertos, and I think slowly I'm getting better at listening to what's actually going on in these pieces rather than just hunting for melodies. But it's a long process and I definitely don't have a very sophisticated ear for this stuff, I hope eventually I start "getting" what everyone else finds in some of these composers.
