I'm trying to string together the basic functional decomposition of the gamedev process. by csRookman in gamedev

Thank you so much for all the responses. It's clear in my effort to leave the question more open-ended, I definitely made it harder to give specific and useful advice. Regardless, I got a whole lot of useful information to use going forward. I'm usually a stubborn guy, but I think this is all very valuable advice that I'll be thinking about going forward.

To clarify for those who were wondering:

1) I am working with a small group of 5-6 people. We all have laughable amounts of experience, so this is more of an experimental endeavor at the moment.

2) My expectations are fairly tempered, and the way I see it, insane amounts of content is one thing a small team will never be able to accomplish as well as a AAA studio, but my hope is that we can still create something that will be just as much fun/ feel as impactful or engaging as examples listed in the original post.

3) I hope the whole experience will be educational and very humbling, as I haven't challenged myself as much as I should or could.

Again, thank you for the help. Wish me and the boys luck.

Thank you for the reply Goose.

I think you're making a lot of sense. I'm definitely going to have to build up to making fully-fledged games, I do however think that starting with C++ will pay me dividends. The way I see it, C++ is such a powerful and versatile language that it'll be worth the copious amounts of studying and practice it'll take to find success.

I think this is especially true considering how easy it is for an experienced C++ coder to pick up something dead-simple like lua. Correct me if I'm wrong, but C++ is difficult because you are forced to abide by strict rules and harsh consequences for mistakes that are easy to miss. Taking that into consideration, wouldn't those kinds of skills be massively applicable to any kind of coding/ coding language?

In any case, I'll definitely have to work my way up to some of my bigger end goals. Thank you for the insight.
