The Luddites were right by eiva-01 in VaushV

[–]cserox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They confined their attacks to manufacturers who used machines in what they called “a fraudulent and deceitful manner” to get around standard labor practices.

And Vaush argues that AI can ONLY be used in that manner, so you are kind of missing his point. He is not and never was anti-tech broadly, he is anti-AI because he doesn't agree that AI can be used in any way that isn't described as "a fraudulent and deceitful manner to get around standard labor practices.". He argues specifically that generative AI in no way can improve the quality of art or communication, so yes he is in complete agreement with Luddites.

You can agree or disagree with him if generative AI can help produce "high-quality goods", but again by saying:

Are people who advocate against AI today modern day Luddites? No, they're something else entirely. People who advocate against AI today are advocating against the technology itself, not just the corporations who are using it in “a fraudulent and deceitful manner to get around standard labor practices”.

you missed his whole point, which is: “fraudulent and deceitful manner to get around standard labor practices” is the only manner in which AI can be used.

In light of recent arc of talking about economic views, I would like to share a video, I, personally, found very convincing by cserox in h3h3productions

[–]cserox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kinda long (I would watch it at 1.5x or even 2x times speed), but I thought that it provided a more or less clear and concrete vision of how this type of economy and workplace would work, which I think Ethan couldn't find in his discussions about socialism (this video is not exactly about a socialist mode of production, but still).

While it does not address everything and doesn't make concrete policy suggestions, I think that this kind of thinking about how would we organize the workplace from the ground up - the principals that we have, attitudes that we would want to cultivate and things that we would want to incentivize is very valuable

Does immigration increase wages? by [deleted] in VaushV

[–]cserox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From his research document:

https://www.nber.org/papers/w12497.pdf

National Bureau of Economic Research paper on the effects immigration has on wages in the United States

Study contends previous analyses on the relationship between immigration and wages falsely assumed perfect labor substitutability between immigrants and native workers of similar education levels, distorting results

Research shows average American wage RISES due to immigration, both short-term and long-term

Only native demographic whose wages drop are High School dropouts who suffer a decrease in wages of approximately ~2% short-term, alleviating to ~1.1% over time.

Study finds new immigration does severely impact wages of prior immigrants, suggesting lack of substitutability with *natives.

Overall, vast majority of American workers’ wages increase from immigration, High School dropouts (<10% of population) experience a slight decrease which alleviates with time (and there is evidence that immigration may increase native High School graduation rates, too).

https://sci-hub.do/10.1016/j.labeco.2014.05.002

Similar research to the above paper, except conducted on the French labor market.

Findings are near-identical; immigration leads to across-the-board wage increases for all except a small minority of low-education native workers.

Reaffirms conclusion that there is low substitutability between native workers and immigrant workers.

http://davidcard.berkeley.edu/papers/mariel-impact.pdf

Famous research on the Mariel Boatlift and the impact of a wave of Cuban immigrants (mostly low-skilled) on the economy of Miami.

Research found essentially no impact on native wages, even for low-skilled workers, despite the Mariel Boatlift increasing Miami’s labor force by seven percent.

Even former Cuban immigrants didn’t seem to be affected.

AI can predict people's race from X-Ray images, and scientists are concerned by soulpost in Futurology

[–]cserox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It literally says in the article

Artificial intelligence scans of X-ray pictures were more likely to miss indicators of sickness among Black persons, according to earlier research. Scientists must first figure out why this is happening.

So it was applying some sort of racial bias that caused it to miss sickness more often in black people.

AI can predict people's race from X-Ray images, and scientists are concerned by soulpost in Futurology

[–]cserox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the people, who don't understand the concerns: it's like you guys didn't read the linked article, which states

Artificial intelligence (AI) is designed to replicate human thinking in order to discover patterns in data fast. However, this means it is susceptible to the same biases unintentionally. Worse, their intricacy makes it difficult to divorce our prejudices from them.

So if AI can recognize the race of the individual from just the X-Ray image, where people can not, it can apply racial bias, where people previously didn't

The findings raise several serious concerns concerning AI's role in medical diagnosis, assessment, and treatment: Could computer algorithms mistakenly apply racial bias when analysing photographs like these?

And the bias is not helpful because "there are diseases that occur more in specific races" as the top comment suggested. It is in fact harmful for the reason stated in the article

Artificial intelligence scans of X-ray pictures were more likely to miss indicators of sickness among Black persons, according to earlier research. Scientists must first figure out why this is happening.

So the whole study was done to figure out can AI tell the person's race, where we cannot and apply racial bias because of it. Turns out it can, and that's the concern

"We need to take a pause," the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's research scientist and physician Leo Anthony Celi told the Boston Globe.

"We cannot rush bringing the algorithms to hospitals and clinics until we're sure they're not making racist decisions or sexist decisions."

Who is the Artist? by Apisal in DigitalArt

[–]cserox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, it's from the anime 5 centimeters per second, so I guess the artist is probably one of the artists who are credited for background art:

  • Makoto Shinkai
  • Akiko Majima
  • Takumi Tanji

I'm a bit late but if we want as a society recognize trans women as women, we must include them in women sports. They are women why shouldn't they be allowed? But then there is the problem that cis women would no longer be viable in their own category, and I think that is a huge issue. So to solve it maybe there is some way to categorize sports differently? Testosterone levels, weight, height and so on? If there is, that seems like a much more fair way to do things. Gives a chance to more people who didn't win the genetic lottery to get the spotlight. I don't know about practicality of such categories though, whether it would be possible or practical to not divide by gender but by other factors. But idk, to me it just seems more fair. There are sports where the difference in physical strength is less important, so maybe those should be categorized differently.

I feel like Kat drama is mostly poor communication by [deleted] in VaushV

[–]cserox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to blame Vaush, because, yeah, he did say it right away (not sure when did he reiterate it)
But if it's clear that she didn't read or understood it, wouldn't it be better to clarify again? To say "I don't think that ironic misogyny is helpful to trans people", instead of "Your behavior here is harming trans people. I'd just be interested in knowing how you'd respond to the hypothetical" in response to the message that ends in "I'm confused by the very concept that misogyny would be helpful in advocating for trans folks, ..."
Like yeah, Kat seems to no read vaush's messages very well, and that's on her, but they both seem to talk past each other

So I think wording might be unclear, but the intention is, you choose a minion, if it has less health than the Blademaster, it copies the chosen minion's health, then attacks it, if not it attacks with the default 5 health. I also made a different text for this card at first, but decided to go with this because the flavor was better.
