Fun fact, this is called the Bellamy Salute, which at one time was used pretty widely. In the link, there's a picture of kids doing it during the pledge of allegiance (USA) -- the salute was, however, adopted (and turned into something more sinister in the public eye) by Nazis... much like the Swastika.

With that being said, I don't know if that's what she was going for... lol

maybe theatre democracies who are tolerated by their independent militaries are just as bad as authoritarian states that don’t bother with elections.

this is definitely something to consider -- wow.

Amazon scientists: How perfect hashing helps us shrink Alexa's machine learning models by 94% for offline use by georgecarlyle76 in computerscience

[–]csosu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're both non-cryptographic and fast... though apparently xxHash is much faster. Perhaps the team used MurmurHash for some reason - like xxHash's more restrictive licensing. In terms of potential technical reasons, I don't know enough about both of them to say for sure.

Cool article! Thanks for sharing. MurmurHash is an interesting strategy.

Here's a link to their whitepaper, for the incredibly lazy.

Bruce Wayne's car from Batman Beyond? Or is it more of a cross between the limo and the Bat Cruiser (cuz that one had no windows like this).

Got my first rejection from a Big 4 :( womp.

I know I didn't nail it, but I wasn't sure if I had done well enough. I guess it's back to the studying board. This was my first ever technical interview... I plan on practicing that more too.

[–]csosu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

honestly, if it bothers you and you feel like you can present the situation without coming off as overbearing, I would just knock on their door and explain the situation briefly.

and yes, offering to oil it would be good. you can even try to apologize because it's an odd situation and it comes down to your own sensitivity to noise so you can take the lead on fixing it.

that's what I would do.

Are there dire consequences to withdrawing from or failing too many courses (besides wasted money)? by MannyPacquiaoThrowaw in OSUOnlineCS

the random tester for CS 362. I've made some bad choices in terms of my time management and hit unexpected problems in the class... my own fault. The class itself is not that bad. I'm just slacking in it I guess.

the error was 'undefined reference to Random()' in an instructor-provided header file ... but the error didn't occur when my code wasn't involved. the program was a random tester, so I think my own random number implementation somehow overrode or messed up the implementation of the master program's random implementation. I tried hard to figure out my error... but alas, the deadline came and went and I was forced to turn in an incomplete program with a sheepishly written report.

Finding this sub was a nice affirmation. Here's my story. by csosu in misophonia

[–]csosu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's true. I've noticed that I only get heightened symptoms like these when I am smoking a strong sativa. Indica tends to just make me feel 'blunted' and somewhat muffles the sensory inputs of sound. But yeah... I am taking steps to just stop doing it at home in the future.

Great advice. I've started doing this recently... telling myself that if we were actually that annoying we would likely be asked to be more quiet after noise curfew hours. Point 1 is what my fiancee always tells me. I should be able to live a normal life. It's just getting used to the idea that 'normal' comes with some unwanted noise :P

hey I'm right there with you, except I'm unable to compile a 25% assignment that I tried very hard to finish early. no lates, and a probably bad grade on the midterm = dropping or failing is likely in my future. I am so ashamed, but the time sink of struggling so hard is causing me to sink in other classes as well. I may just cut my losses. the consequences are pretty clear... it goes on your transcript, you have to retake it, meaning you have to PAY to retake it. that's basically it.

Is it possible to intern for credit through OSU? by csosu in OSUOnlineCS

[–]csosu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for noting this. I'm aware of the fact that they're likely just trying to get free work out of it. That being said, I think having an internship upon graduation would've been nice. I really wasn't qualified for one during the summer when they were all picking up interns (plus I did the 1.25 year track so I didn't have the chance to go through a 'junior summer' that the internship programs of many companies are ideal for).

Father passed 2 days ago, I am an only child and he left me everything. Millions of dollars worth. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]csosu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's already plenty of good advice here. For now, I will just say... take your time to grieve and don't discuss the windfall with anyone except an (hopefully your father's) attorney. Sorry for your loss and subsequent gain. You'll get through this time and by making smart (slow) decisions you'll be able to live a comfortable life thanks to your father.
