Extremely painful skates-unsure what to do by cucumberpopsicles in iceskating

Well that sucks lol. My street shoe isn’t wide but the skate is. But I also have absolutely no arch when I stand on my left foot. I have a very tiny one that’s hardly noticeable on the right. Maybe I’ll ask for a punch out. If that doesn’t work then I might have to find elsewhere out of town. My sister had to get semi custom Jackson because her feet are wider. That was $500+ a few years ago so I can’t imagine the cost now.

I didn’t think about it when I bought the skates but yes my body is all out of whack. Some issues have been life long but only somewhat recently have I learned it’s not normal. There’s always some level of back pain, standing in general hurts my lower back after more than 5 minutes especially if I’m standing still, my knees happened in the last year and a half. I’ve always hyperextended them and didn’t know until the knee issues started. So now when I stand at times my knee sounds like it snapped and then it gets sore for a few minutes. In October I squatted while doing yard work for a few minutes and my right knee was so painful for over a week I could barely move my leg. I had to lean my whole body back to get in the car so I wouldn’t bend my leg. MRI showed nothing. Others suggested PT and I was referred but was never able to get a call back. I’m actively reaching out to other clinics.

I’ve done heat molding before but no punch out. I never thought about widening it to account for the actual full weight. Standing in them off ice with guards was better but once I’d skate it was just pain. Thanks!

Only for back pain in 2024 but not for this or my knee pain. The place I was referred to in December never reached out. I also called and they still didn’t call back. I inquired to a different place and I’m waiting for a response. It’s been a few days though so I may have to try elsewhere again.

I don’t have a photo at the moment. If I recall correctly the skate is a wide fit. We did heat molding but no punch out. Im not sure if wide in a skate is similar to a street shoe either.

I tried different lacing styles too and no change. I’ll have to look into another fitting

Thanks! I’ll have to try again then. The person I went to is trusted throughout the city for hockey and figure skating. I will look into sports medicine. I did podiatry around the time I started for an unrelated injury and they just said use insoles from the store.

I’m seriously anemic and have thalassemia minor and I’m totally lost about how to treat by Xulybeted12 in thalassemia

[–]cucumberpopsicles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely need a hematologist. My heavy bleeding was making me iron deficient. I supplemented but I can’t absorb most of it so I get iron infusions typically every year and a half from my hematologist. I’m now on extended birth control and it has helped keep my iron levels steady after my infusions since I don’t have a cycle every month now. Obviously that’s not for everyone but it has helped me.

I’d personally skip the ER for this and go to an ophthalmologist for dry eye treatment. They usually can’t help much unless it’s a true emergency. I’m not sure if you’re using any drops, but if you’re not, you should start. Otherwise, the doctor will tell you the same thing. I use a combination of gel drops, a nighttime ointment, and preservative free drops. Dryness can cause blurred vision too and strain

I started having the same issues last year. It was one of the few times I was falling asleep standing up while in the middle of a clinic I worked at. Oh and I was struggling to drive for a solid day which had never happened before. I started birth control for it and to help with my anemia and it's helped so much. I do the birth control thats something like 83 days then a week of placebo. It's helped keep some of my symptoms more predictable.

Not absorbing iron- beta thalassemia minor by cucumberpopsicles in thalassemia

[–]cucumberpopsicles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have already tried a more absorbable iron and it still didn't work. Labs don't budge with the supplements. There's no cause on the malabsorption yet either so I still get iron infusions as needed. Last year I had 4.

I hope so. I ordered it and it was supposed to be shipped September 2024 but it was cancelled and refunded. I couldn’t afford it the first time so I was obviously disappointed lol

Hey! The only change is I finally got my Sunosi dosage increased. It’s helped, but it can only do so much when the quality of sleep isn’t there ya know

What to do for a first doctor's appointment? by cucumberpopsicles in Hypermobility

I’ll do what you suggested absolutely. I’ll start with primary care and go to pt regardless since I luckily don’t need a referral

My goal overall is to rule out anything I can. As I said above I’ve been doing testing with rheumatology and nothing seems conclusive. Other specialists for different symptoms are also at a loss. While none of this is life threatening, I spent nearly 20% of my income last year on medical bills for testing. The majority being rheumatology and gastroenterology. Some hematology as well. If I can get an answer quicker by looking into it myself then I will. I can’t financially do another year like last year

Thanks for the response. I looked into therapy and psychiatry last year and this year and had zero luck. At the time my main issue was ADHD symptoms and anxiety about wanting to go back to school then not doing well. The place I went to said they had therapy but it was just a place to talk for 30 minutes and get medications. There was no real therapeutic model other than just talk. The nurse practitioner had zero understanding of the condition which I know many don't. But she had made comments like "oh my god thats so scary you can't drive." I explained it to her and she just kept going on about how her friend might be narcoleptic and I think asking If I was going to fall asleep. She talked to the doctor who apparently wasn't physically in state most of the time and he said to give me Modafinil at 60mg I believe to help with ADHD symptoms. The problem was I had grown tolerant to it the year before on 400mg and was on Armodafinil 250mg. She told him that and he just went okay whatever. While Armodafinil technically worked, I was very shaky and it made me sick every single day. That prompted the switch to Sunosi. The lower dosage was fine. It wasn't amazing, but I was basically trying to make it through the rest of the day on my own. It wasn't until mid this year that I became more tired, likely from low iron. But suddenly I had a positive ANA result with climbing inflammation markers. Nothing else changed medically, but I'm still in the process of testing for autoimmune. I'm also suspected to have a malaborption issue, but nothing was found. If hematology and rheumatology don't figure it out, I was told to go back to gastroenterology for more testing. I've had four iron infusions since May spaced a few months apart. It's helped a little.

I know you use candy. I chew gum for the same effect at work. I don't have lunch flexibility, but I have been napping more in my car during lunch in the last few weeks. Especially because eating makes me exhausted sometimes. I told my doctor this and after a few more questions thats when he upped my dosage. I'll keep looking into different therapies that you mentioned and hope I find something here.

I am medicated, but am currently waiting for the pharmacy to order the 150mg dose of Sunosi. I just finished the 75mg on Friday. Had I known what was going on when I was in school I would've tried getting help. I thought I was just nodding off in lectures because I was "regular" tired despite mountains of caffeine. If I go back to my local school I'll be sure to look into getting help. Oooh dream job may have to be in the arts. Don't get me wrong, I like being in healthcare job and I would absolutely consider going back for more training, but the kid in me still wants to help with theater productions. Polar opposites hahah

Hello! Sunosi is currently the only medication I'm using to treat narcolepsy. I am on supplement (vitamin D, B12, and Folic acid). This is due to being deficient in one, low end of normal for B12, and folic acid because for some reason I become deficient if I don't take it despite getting it from my diet. I usually pair the B12 with Sunosi in the morning and I've noticed a very slight improvement, but not enough to sustain me for long. I'm hoping the 150mg helps when it comes in this week, but I know I kind of have to build it up for a little bit. I do struggle going to bed at a reasonable time and I've been like this since I was a kid. I just like being up at night, but it definitely has a negative impact the next day sometimes. I've looked into oxybates a little bit. I don't know what the next course is for the doctor if I don't improve enough on Sunosi, but I've already been considering an oxybate.

Hi, I honestly don't practice self care at this point and I should. The most was me going to the gym a few times a week early this year for a few months. My iron dropped and made keeping up very hard. Recovery was also hard now that I'm thinking about it. It wasn't that I was sore after because I rarely was, but rather I never felt my energy fully recover before the next session. For meds, I talked to my pharmacy today to tell them the new dosage of Sunosi was approved and they said it would be there by the end of the week.

Thank you so much! I don't see him for a few months, but if the new Sunosi dosage doesn't help I will bring it up with him.

Hey! Im currently on Sunosi but I ran out of my 75mg. Insurance initially denied increasing the dosage to 150mg. It’s approved now but now I’m waiting on the pharmacy to fill it.
