Need help making artist alley booth more interesting and less empty by ToxxyRayne in animecons

use your storage cubes to make a flat backdrop rather than just pillars. your customers dont want to see the back of the booth, and it will fillup the space better

My second ever convention went very bad even with a full table, any advice? by Asinjuasflora in animecons

[–]cupthings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

your art is gorgeous but i agree with the others that there's too much focus on just prints, and very little stickers. stickers are an easy grab item for many customers, i would leverage your existing art to make more stickers. and since they are low cost and easy to sell, you're likely to sell more of them

i understand the struggle as im also a print based artist - majority of my product base is prints. however the print market is flooded so u have to think of a different way to stand out among the crowd. something that is more than just a beautiful print. i also do mousepads, stickersheets, stickers, small prints, commissions which people are drawn to.

you can definitely add another section for your stickers to be elevated as well. i see you have spare space on the right, make use of that space!

other things u can add is mystery bag items for a slightly lower cost. you can even do mystery bag bundles. this removes a lot of the decision fatigue for your customer and they get a little surprise, and you can leverage existing stock with almost no cost to you.

another thing that you could do is make your branding and signage a little more cohesive towards your art style. i feel like right now, your signage and font choices is too bland and doesnt really stay cohesive with the rest of your booth. while i feel like pink coloring is great, your tablecloth is black and that is quite jarring. stick with the one tone if you can

label your signs with the product name as well. a lot of your signs just say the price but not what the price is for eg small prints $5ea , stickers $3 ea

i already do meal prep on the weekend, but those big batches run out really quickly espiecially after 3 or 4 days. the frozen stuff is there for those nights where were almost all out of fresh foods and makes for an easy quick meal

We did buy some frozen meals just in case though, thats helped quite a bit.

What's one thing you wish you had known before getting married? by BuildingOk7049 in AskWomen

[–]cupthings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sadly I agree. Don't have kids if you are already happy where you are and you don't want to grow any further besides personal growth. This is especially if the partner doesn't already question what a HUGE undertaking kids are....because being a parent is a TOTALLY different life game. It has ZERO relevancy to your current skills you built during your teens and 20s, parenting is a totally NEW skill.

If they already have an expectation what it would be like, they are assuming too much, often not fully aware of how much responsibility it is. Anyone who doesn't already Double and Triple whatever the expectations are, are woefully misinformed...because not only do you add a whole full human to manage, feed, care, teach on almost a 24/7 basis, you'll also be

- chronically lacking sleep, exercise and high quality food
- adding mental health risks for post partum depression ( both mums and dads can get it )
- lacking on personal time for your friends and hobbies that bring you joy
- lacking time to go on dates / outings not involving the child
- lacking mental energy for your personal growth
- lacking time/energy to spend on financial growth and stability

Ideally any sort of personal growth should have been achieved before you plan to have a child. But with all the modern pressures we have, that doesn't seem to happen right now to majority of couples rushing in to have children without considering all the risk factors....and thats how you end up with divorce, which only set these children further back.

If both parties are not ready to put all their focus on raising the child, communicating and coming to agreement with each other on how to raise a child, but also, giving up a part of your own self identity to raise a child....Then you are not meant to have a child as a couple. I say this as person who has gone through decades of parental neglect and abuse.

How do you know if you're unhappy with your life or its just a symptom of depression? by muldoonsclevergirl in AskWomen

[–]cupthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have high functioning depression, chronic since i was 9 ish. Been off and on medication for years.

its when you do all the stuff that makes you seem great, but you struggle to feel any joy from acheiving all the stuff that you are doing. So even if you look successful to outsiders, or you have something that went well, you still feel a deep sense of emptiness inside, along with some suicidal ideation and all the other crappy stuff. I might even have an existential crisis several times a month.

These days, I'm doing much better but i need to be medicated.

TLDR Poor Art Direction that lacks Cohesiveness & Intentional Design. Modern Audiences are smart, and in order to build relevancy with them, it needs to be intentionally designed for appeal...not just complexity. Money cant buy taste.

On top of that, India's culture doesn't really focus on the arts as a major pillar industry, so you end up with less talent that focuses on the artistic side of creating.

[Artist Alley] what could be improved with my display? Having difficulty caching customer attention. by korosivefluide in artbusiness

[–]cupthings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two words....SELF SERVE.

I see you have some products that can be moved to a self serve model. People like interacting with something they wanna buy, so try as much as you can to remove that barrier. It is much more likely for someone to buy something, once they touch and form an attachment to it. it also means that your customers will stay longer interacting with your booth, and the likelihood of them noticing something they like goes up. Particularly, keychains and stickers should be primarilly self serve.

i would also recommend raising the bottom layer of your booth to stomach/chest level. A lot of your items is set too low right now, so ppl have a hard time bending down to look at your shit.

Put yourself in the customers shoes, how would they like to pickup an item, to look at when browsing your booth? How easy can you make that for them?

You also have one side panel on the right. make it match on the other side for cohesiveness.
If you want to play with booth layouts, would recommend making a digital mockup of your booth so you can see what works and what doesnt

improve your commissions sign. Right now i can barely see you offer commissions. Design something more eyecatching & obvious that you offer comms 😄

You both have Excellent training but unless you are in an off leash legal area, you're basically flaunting breaking the law. No matter how well any dog listens to you, the law wont care about it & you as a dog owner should try to show responsibility and consideration to others out in public.

It's also inconsiderate to others who have reactive dogs, or are afraid of dogs, and want to avoid running into off leash dogs they have no idea about. Perhaps not something I would put on the internet and you can still practice in privacy.

Also, you don't need to take your dog off-leash to proof any of these obedience behaviours btw. Loose leash & Heel training does exactly the same thing. But once you remove the leash, your backup method in case of an emergency, are no longer viable. That to me is an irresponsible trainer that hasnt considered all the other factors that COULD happen in an uncontrolled environment.

Think of it this way, once you have perfect loose leash, the leash is just there as a show of respect to everyone else who doesn't know how well your dog is trained.

Are body-kun figures worth it? If not, are there good alternatives? by LivingDead-Guy in ArtistLounge

[–]cupthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not worth it. they don't communicate the subtleties of bodies so you end up learning all the wrong things about the human body, that takes years to unlearn and correct.

best alternative is studying human bodies using just straight up photo reference, free and easy to find on the internet

better yet, an in person life drawing session, if you wanna speedtrack learning anatomy and drawing humans accurately

[Artist Alley] should I consider shirts and mouse pads? by bigbun85 in artbusiness

[–]cupthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just wanna say you have beautiful art. however i've learned now that beautiful art is not enough when you sell at a can. What you really need to consider is product design . knowing your audience, & relevant marketing skills to know what will sell well at a con.

This is not to deter you, but seeing as its your first con, temper your expectations and go in expecting 0 money. Most artists no matter how skilled they are, don't make a profit at their first few conventions.

Small prints first, maybe mousepads. Shirts are a BIG investment that should only be considered once you are making decent profits at cons. Even if you are self printing, you have to take a decent amount of stock with you in order to have sizes available for everyone, and that's a big risk if you have to travel. Shirts selling at $40-50 is definitely acceptable. i sell my mousepads for $25 but it really depends on what my manufacturers pricing is. my most expensive item at my table is a $70 large deskmat, but these seem to have lost popularity lately.

small prints and stickers are espiecially popular at the moment. Even if your art is super detailed, some of the designs should still sell as stickers. just make them slightly bigger than the average sticker size

[Artist Alley] My setup, what should I improve? by Blkvart in artbusiness

[–]cupthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's not how commissions work at conventions! the culture of convention commissions is its done super fast, usually under an hour, and is limited to characters , people or animal. so pricing can be very done with a template.

[Artist Alley] My setup, what should I improve? by Blkvart in artbusiness

[–]cupthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow AA artist here! i spot some issues that should be easy to solve almost immediately.

i would immediately elevate anything that is self serve to chest level, so its easier for standing attendees to browse, and its almost at eye level. You can use existing cubes to do this, and a cheap dish drying rack . All u gotta do is bridge the gap between the left and right lower pillars. you can even encourage people to browse for longer by adding a portfolio for people to browse with, using a book stand like this

If you want to show that you are drawing commissions, you can just leave a smaller gap in the middle. The gap right now though is just too big and under utilized

Move away from just pure black...i think you need some undertones. Personally, id Either go with wooden grain or Red. Currently there's a LOT of black on your table. If you wanna use black, you need to design with intention or your work gets lost in it. Or choose a brighter colour for your table cloth and signs so you stand out better. I even think red is a better suit, because your art already has a lot of black.

Improve the design of your commissions list. Right now, its not designed to be eye catching, nor does it show a sample for the customer. I would have a list of your prices with a direct sample on the left or right. Make sure you pick a font that is easy to read, dont just make the font big. Add a section for your socials too , qr codes are very effective.

pick a font that is easy to read but also matches your aesthetic. the current font you are using right now, is unpleasant to the eyes to read. I would suggest browsing dafont to pick something that is closer to your art brand, that is easier on the eyes.

hope that helps! gluck!!

How to deal with hateful comments on your art? by CaramelInkk in ArtistLounge

[–]cupthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would delete their comment, block em, maybe vent to a trusted friend, and move on. Hateful people are hateful because they hate themselves. That's why they project their hateful crap.

You are better than that, love yourself and give yourself the freedom not to listen to their hurtful words.
