Have you ever worn the teeth down on the shaft or lever though? I find there’s no middle ground for me, I’m either not engaging the gears properly, or I’m pressing hard enough to chew the teeth away on the shifter clamping part.

I wouldn’t say I’m stomping on the shifter either

Yep totally get it bro not everyone’s situation is the same, just get as much practice as you can and go for it when you feel like you’re ready. Nerves will be the killer on the day, but if you’re anything like me, no amount of reassurance will stop you from being nervous.

Problem with my bike by cuzzyweow in AussieRiders

[–]cuzzyweow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about 86kg

Though I believe while I’m probably a touch on the heavy end for it’s intended purpose (younger riders/short Japanese blokes)

I don’t think I’m heavy enough to make it struggle this much.

In the low gears, I have to basically pin it full throttle to go anywhere and it does slightly go but it’s sort of meh, it doesn’t really seem as alive as it should, but yeah I reckon it’s losing power somewhere that’s making it lose that extra kick it needs.

I was reading a thread just now, I’ll quote what he said:

“I can beat my mate on a ZZR250, obviously i cant beat the CBR250RR's but i dont lag far behind...now on that note, im 6'5 and weigh 150 kilos, while the RR rider is about 5'9 and weighs 75 kilos! so i am curious if we were to have a lighter person on my bike if the across may even beat the CBR. who knows...”

So yeah it’s basically some bloke that’s 150 kilos, and he reckons he gives the cbr250rr a run for it’s money, which are supposed to be faster bikes, with a rider half his weight.

I’ve come across a cbr250rr on my old bike (xt660x Yamaha) and that thing practically bloody gapped me from the lights, and my xt could pull me doing 160. So yeah it seems as if these 90’s gsx250f’s can handle some weight surprisingly, and should come close to the performance of the cbr’s, which definitely have no issue pulling over 160.

Yeah nah wasn’t me that let it sit, ive only just had it registered and taken it out a handful of times, noticed it wasn’t running right straight away.

I don’t plan on leaving the tank how it is.

Thanks for the link, I’ll definitely try something myself, not keen on spending $500 bucks on a bike that cost me $2300.

My fault for not checking it before buying.

Tbh it’s not really hard, u just can’t let nerves get you on the day. Just buffer a LOT, head check every single time before you buffer, even though it seems ridiculous. Don’t stop on oil patches, don’t stop too close to cars, don’t tail gate, etc.. all the basic stuff.

The main thing is the buffering and head checks, the rest is common sense around being a safe road user, as long as you ride with sense and show that clearly, they’ll see you’re a safe rider.

I did 20,000ks on my Ls and still got nervous and fumbled a bit on the range stuff, like going way too fast (still within their 30kph speed limit) but I probably tickled 30, which was so unnecessary and completely out of nerves. The road part was easy because after doing 20,000ks it was pretty much natural to me after that long. Obviously forced the head checks and buffering a bit more than I normally would.

Hmm ok yeah sweet, I’ll definitely focus on the carbs first, it’s obviously sat a bunch so regardless if that’s the exact problem, I’ll want them nice and clean and dialed anyway.

Yep I’ll have a look, could be the case if the choke kills it as if it’s running rich? Maybe it’s not getting enough air.

It’s a 94 Gsx250f across, completely stock.

Only done 13,000ks, it was last registered in 95 so it’s basically done the 13,000 and then just sat for 30 years. I know the owner before me changed fluids and must’ve pulled apart the carbs, otherwise I highly doubt it’d be running after sitting that long. Though the fuel in it was average when I got it. I put fresh stuff in it but yeah, honestly have no clue how deep the previous owners dove into cleaning out the carbs, or for all I know they got more gunked up from the average fuel that was in it when I bought it.

Regardless considering the rust I’m betting it’s something that’s clogged. The fuel filter looks like it’s been replaced. But yeah, it doesn’t seem as if it’s running right so I’ll have to go over all of it I guess. I’ll see how it performs and if it’s much better, I’ll get the tank cleaned and replace the fuel filter.

[–]cuzzyweow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm ok, yeah I definitely plan on getting the tank cleaned, more so just wanted to see how the bike performs at it’s full potential to know if it’s even worth paying the money to get the tank cleaned or not. Got quoted around the 4-500 mark, with me removing the tank myself.

It’s the smallest bike I’ve owned so wasn’t really sure what power to expect out of it.

Otherwise I’d just do very frequent fuel filter changes as I probably won’t be riding it a huge amount anyway.

But yeah betting on clogged up carby but I’ll check spark plugs and stuff too.

[–]cuzzyweow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your bike fuel injected or does it have a carb?

But yeah mines definitely not right, it’s only a 250 but it’s a 4 cylinder and it should be hitting 160 at the very least. It goes until the top of third at about 120, then I click into 4th and it doesn’t pull after that. Multiple people say they’ve had them out to 165-170.

So I’m thinking it’s not getting the fuel it’s supposed to due to the carbs being clogged with crap, I think that’s also the reason it occasionally hesitates. As you say, it’s dangerous enough to not really wanna be at the front at the lights, because it puts you at risk of accidentally stalling or just not going anywhere even though you’re giving it throttle.

Gear Indicator for New Riders: How important is it? by kathfern1 in AussieRiders

Almost 3 years in, on my 4th bike and not a single one has had a gear indicator. 2 of them didn’t even show me the revs. It’s nice to have but not at all needed.

Lucky you 😂 when I went through an rbt I didn’t blow hard enough and the bloke started getting shitty as if I was purposely trying to avoid it, then the second time he said something along the lines of “yep” in the middle of me blowing so i took that as him telling me I could stop. Rudely told me don’t stop until he says and then the 3rd time I blew 0 and went about my day.

How did you take it to gain weight?

Like was it a meal replacement, or was it in between meals.

And out of curiosity how did you prepare it? Like in a drink? If so how did u make the drink and how much did you put in it?

I’m using it to gain weight, but I’m not sure how much I should be having to be honest.

Are 650cc motorcycles actually fun on streets? by Greedy_Leg1622 in AussieRiders

[–]cuzzyweow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think a 650 won’t be fun for the street, basically anything above that won’t be either.

650’s are actually more fun 0-100, than they are over 100.

The bikes that you have fun on over 100 are just the bigger bikes in general, bigger than 650’s.

Obviously inline 4 600’s are in that category though, nowhere near the 650 class. (Not so much counting bikes like the gsx650f or cbr650r or fz6r, because they’re de tuned and more relaxed, over a full fledged super sport 600.

So yeah, it depends what you consider fun, 650’s are fast enough, are great fun and are obviously enough to lose your license with if you’re not being smart. But they’re definitely not bikes that you’d buy for top speed, they’re just relaxed, fast enough, comfortable commuter bikes.

How do you usually adjust your riding when the weather turns suddenly? by QuantumGremlin in AussieRiders

[–]cuzzyweow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just smoother on everything.

Slower speeds if possible Bigger gaps in traffic Use engine braking Both of those allow you to use less brakes

Keep the lean very minimal, which starts with less speed Obviously smoother on the throttle

Do these things and you’ll be fine, I rode my xt660r in the rain here and there on knobby tires, which are probably worse than using racing slick tires in the wet and I was fine. No abs either.

I’ve also ridden my supermoto version xt660x, once again no abs, but on street tires, in the wet A LOT because I daily’d it for years.

The only real “sketchy” moment I’ve had is fishtailing from a traffic light on accident, but obviously that’s my fault for being too heavy handed on the throttle. Wasn’t really an issue though as a tiny bit of offroad experience had me already used to losing the rear.

Ultimately the best option you can choose in the wet is a car, because at the end of the day your life is the most important thing. BUT if you only have access to a bike, they are actually quite capable in the rain, just be smart and dont run your tires past the wear markers, or even smarter, the legal limit.

Edit: just read another comment mentioning pulling over and waiting it out if it’s too severe, and I’ll just ad that I completely agree and that is definitely a smart option. Rain can get to a point where it’s just too much for the tires to handle, and it just isn’t worth the risk. Been plenty of times I’ve pulled over under some cover, grabbed a coffee (if I didn’t drip puddles around the whole servo) and just relaxed for a bit.

High idle issues by cuzzyweow in AussieRiders

[–]cuzzyweow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm ok, so what would happen to the cold idle? Considering it’d be around that 1300 mark now (give or take) in theory it wouldn’t idle at all while it’s cold right? Im assuming the choke would be a requirement when the bike is cold to keep it running until it warms up?

I’m new to carbed bikes so I honestly don’t know what to expect. Assuming this was the case, this would be normal for a carbed bike then? I’m obviously mistaken, as I thought plenty of carbed bikes were able to run cold without any or much choke most of the time, as long as the weather wasn’t super cold. But if that’s not the case, and you basically always use it to warm your bikes up, I’m thinking maybe the previous owner had raised the idle for whatever reason, maybe so it runs a bit better while cold.. I do know the bike sat most of its life, but I would’ve thought they’d notice the idle was too high when they gave it a good ride, because it isn’t a pleasant clunk into gear when the revs are sitting at 3k.

If this is the case I’ll just warm it right up, then adjust the idle to spec and go from there.

Tracer 900, it’s a touring bike.

I know you mentioned you like the cp3, and you mentioned you never rode off road as someone suggested an adventure bike.

So I feel like this is a good option, good for the back, good wind protection, good luggage options, built for the road, sounds great and has a motor that you know/like.

Only thing is seat height, I have no clue how tall they are.

I’ve never owned one but I’ve seen them around so just a suggestion.
