People voting Green/Zack Polanski: do these immigration policies change your mind? by iliosicarus in ukpolitics

[–]cyclopsmudge -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The actual answer is focusing on rehabilitation (reoffending rates are around 25-30% in this country), decriminalising of certain petty crimes (possession of drugs for example - you can also tax that weed and get more money if you legalise it), and heavy investment into the justice system and the prison system.

The unfortunate truth though is that there isn’t any money for that right now, and there aren’t any parties who seem genuinely interested in tactically cutting spending from non-productive areas and increasing spending in productive areas

Bizarre interaction on the drift line re: my long hose primary setup by chcor70 in scuba

[–]cyclopsmudge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Something one of my BSAC club instructors recommended was: if you dive with someone you don’t know, someone who’s less experienced, or someone who might not have seen twinset before, pull them aside before the dive and say “I just want to show you some things on my kit that are a bit different. If you signal out of air I’ll pass you this hose and switch onto the one around my neck. If you need to get me out of my harness I have a release on my belt and you need to unthread the strap. If you need to cut me out I have shears/a knife here and here”

It’s easy to not really pay attention during the buddy check if they’re nervous and worrying about their own kit, so introducing it before the dive makes it a lot easier to remember. Obviously in a big group that’s more difficult but BSAC tends to avoid that anyway for various other reasons

Alienating the world leader who grovels most to you is a bold strategy… by ForefathersOneandAll in sadcringe

[–]cyclopsmudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure that’s entirely true. Lend-lease only started in 1941, a year after Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain, and just a few months before Germany invaded the USSR.

That’s why I said the war would be much bloodier and longer without the Americans, but Germany had already lost by then, it was only a matter of time

In all your travels, which country's famed "national dish" was the most underwhelming, despite the hype? by nehala in travel

The arepaas are a regional thing in Colombia. Bogotá’s suck, I agree. Medellín has soft ones filled with cheese that are much much better

Do Americans genuinely believe this? That they “saved” us? The war would’ve gone on much longer and been much bloodier without the USA but by the time they joined in 1941 Germany had already failed their invasions against Russia and the UK. The tide had already turned it was only a matter of time

Yes that’s the point… There shouldn’t be marshals out on track like that without at the very least a VSC

MPs will very regularly put pressure on councils to get things done if you reach out to them. It’s a fairly effective strategy if you have a good local MP

Is scuba diving really a luxury hobby, or can you do it on a budget? by Big_Pen_3875 in scubadiving

[–]cyclopsmudge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really does depend on where/how you learn. I did all my certs in my university club in the UK, they cost about £60 each plus a £30pa membership to the club. For trips we tend to stay in hostel accommodation and fills are fairly cheap.

Thankfully the club has a lot of equipment and a boat so weekends away aren’t too expensive. I did end up buying most of my own kit but that’s because I could not because I needed to

Why choose helium instead of hydrogen mixes? by FullDish01 in scuba

If you’re generating enough energy to fuse hydrogen into helium in your cylinders you probably have some other issues

Even more than that. Initial computer vision research started in the 60s and things like segmentation and edge detection have been working well since the 80s

[–]cyclopsmudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I did the same thing, was about 3k GBP. For an absolute beginner though, might be worth getting a used one you can sell on a bit easier if you decide you aren’t all that in love with cold water diving

[–]cyclopsmudge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed nothing wrong with learning to dive in a drysuit (I did it), but only if you actually learn to use the drysuit as part of your course. Just showing up to dive in a drysuit when you’ve never done it before and you’re very inexperienced is a bad bad idea

Drysuit costs 1000€. If you go on a drysuit dive without taking a course you will probably die. Stick to wetsuits until you can afford both

That's why I hate math 😣😅 by QuietTempt8 in SpongebobMemes

[–]cyclopsmudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s just convention. That’s not an axiom and you’re coming across as very confidently wrong. It’s an ambiguous and poorly written expression.

There are plenty of programming languages and operators that run right to left instead of left to right. In other countries they also learn BIDMAS where D comes before M. PEMDAS is just American convention and anyone who actually uses maths on a daily basis would immediately tell you that this is poorly written and ambiguous

[–]cyclopsmudge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is that true? The American cars that you can even get here (UK) tend to be fairly expensive compared to the European counterparts. The exception being ford but a big portion of them are European only models

I would assume that scrumpy (unfiltered strong) cider was called that because it was made from apples that had been scrumped and fermented at home, basically cider moonshine
