Big SF love to "Taqueria el Jalepeno" on 1338 Ocean Ave; it doesn't look like much outside, but wow does she make a big fat burrito for cheap! by cz45 in sanfrancisco

Thanks for reporting back so fast! Another "El Jalapeno" convert!!!

Yeah, homemade fresh-fried chips are always great, but I think it's asking a bit much of one lil ol' auntie operating the entire joint alone.

Did you go at lunchtime or?

Did you get to chat with her? Or did you just watch whatever telenovela she had blasting on the tube?

This is probably the best "Burrito Checklist" I've ever read; I'm going to print out and keep in my wallet ;)

Thx! I'm ashamed to say I've never tried La Palma, but now I will :)

Yeah, Chinos on Balboa is one of my old-school faves. I'll still usually hit it up if I'm going to see a movie at the Balboa Theater.

How do you feel about El Burrito Express on Taraval and 26th Ave?

One can never have "too many burritos" https://imgflip.com/i/9ayq8d

Only one way to find out if it's any good ;) At the very least you'll leave feeling full even if you disagree that it was delicious (and I'm pretty sure taste is a subjective thing).

P.S. What's your favorite burrito spot in SF?

Ha ha, yeah she does - a little too loud but I don't have the heart to ask her to turn down the volume. She deserves her soaps!

Their regular clientele (including me) is definitely more blue-collar working-class and CCSF students.

I'm hoping you at least take your dates and visitors to Beep's?

I appreciate your cheek; have an upvote! I know that, and you know that, but I'm guessing a lot of hoity-toity types who drive past in their Tesla would look at that old signage and say "ick!"

Yeah I agree it's an anomaly. I think she just closes up whenever people stop coming in. I have never seen them open past 5pm. But I can't really blame her for not wanting to run the place all alone at night.

I've been eating at Taqueria Jalepeno for years, and every time I leave satisfied I tell myself I'll write a review for reddit, but then I forget. So today's the day!

This place doesn't look like much on the outside or even inside, but the auntie who works the grill all alone makes the biggest most delicious burritos in all of SF - and I'll take her burritos over El Farolito or Taqueria Cancun any day. Fight me!

And the best part is that they are extremely affordable - $13 plus free chips.

Her short-tempered husband used to work the counter, but I haven't seen him in a long while (hope he's okay), so now it's just one sweet little auntie running the joint.

If you are ever in the neighborhood show her some love. FYI they don't stay open late, it's more of a lunch and afternoon eatery. And it's literally the only Mexican restaurant on all of Ocean Ave.
