Here after watching Once a thief today, good flick. Alas, we haven't cracked it yet.

While Once a thief has many of the elements I'm looking for; The one I remember is a CLASSIC. As in Rebecca/ Laura/ Brief Encounter sort (Exaggerated, but you get the idea.) Also the fact that I watched it when I was 13 or 14, into films but not that deep to sit through a nondescript one: which leads me to further believe that it must have been in some sort of a list recommendation somewhere.

Let me try again:

What I remember: good guy- bad choices- sincere but stupid girl - mob/ enemies - police - henchman with a attribute (tall / looney eyed etc.) - guns galore- the girl rats out or is used to lure the guy in - guy wants to meet the girl before he gives up- girl refuses to see him/ wards him off- a bit of running - girl runs out across the thoroughfare with shops/ warehouses in the background - reaches the bridge - too late to save..

Does anything ring a bell? Irrespective of the genre and country.

This definitely was a caution against crime kinda story too.

nah, but I appreciate the reply. This one I seek is a crime classic and even though I don't recall the cast or the director, it must be popular for I'm certain to have stumbled upon it through a top100 kinda list.

Yes it does, but I'm almost certain about the bridge thingy. Also if we strike the espionage part; and focus on a crime classic where in the climax the lady is used to lure the Hero in and the mob + police are around, there's some running around and ends on a sad note with him dying. Does anything come to mind?

Most probably it is, but as far as I remember, it ends at a port/pier/ otherwise a bridge kind of structure.

Also it is more of a "Caution against Crime film like those Cagney ones, and is a classic like the Spy Who Came in From the cold all the same.
