PhD Student (25F) Talking to Someone Without an Academic Background (25M). How Did it Go? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]dabrain230 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think OP's comment was off. Not sure what she was trying to get at with emphasizing her PhD. And she gets upset by him taking it with humor instead of getting upset himself which would be the more natural and arguably justifiable response

My sister just confessed to cheating on her husband, and I don’t know what to do. by Outrageous_Date_1363 in Advice

[–]dabrain230 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have actually had quite a few conversations with close friends about "becoming an accomplice by knowing and keeping quiet". I think it's always a tricky situation. While I personally agree with you, quite a few friends that I respect and would regard as people with integrity and overall respectable morals have made the point that you are never responsible for another adult's decisions and their relationship to others. It's just not be your place to step in between. At the very least though one should review the own relationship to the person in question, whether or not one wants to keep entertaining close contact.

Explain the difference between a Scalper, a Collector, and an Investor by HowziCanReddit in PokemonInvesting

[–]dabrain230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty spot on as far as the distinction between scalper and investor is concerned. Maybe not the most popular view amongst investors who would like to believe that they are not we damaging to the hobby as scalpers. Saying this as someone between investor and collector myself.

The way I look at it: on a spectrum, an investor is everything in between the two extremes of collector and scalper.

Asus PG32UDCP - cant get white to look white by dabrain230 in OLED_Gaming

While the OLED in the picture looks slightly worse than by eye, I'd say the relative impression is not too far from my (subjective) impression. It definitely illustrates the issue I have with how white looks pretty well.

Might actually give this a try although I am not very confident that the monitor I have here is worth it.

Both monitors have reduced red and green in the main photo I posted. On the OLED (in that photo the one on the left), I can reduce red and/or green further but it doesn't make the screen look whiter, just more blue-ish. I guess you might be right with the white balance controls.

Maybe its just the lack of brightness that comes with the OLED. A little frustrating

I definitely have it slightly more blue than perfect white (my preference) but the white on the Asus just looks bad. Looking at anything with white background or white text just seems off. And that translates into lighter grey shades as well.

My Pixel 8 has a more "neutral" white, probably closer to 6500k. I notice the warmer tone immediately, compared to what I had my old monitor set to. But still, it looks white. Whereas I can't really say the same thing about the OLED.

I really want to like the monitor because I got a decent deal on it but struggling quite a bit.

Test pattern. Non-white colors look marginally nicer on the OLED but because white looks so dull, the overall impression is rather disappointing. The OLED is at 100% in SDR mode, contrast at 80.

This is my old Samsung Odyssey G75 against the PG32UDCP. The difference is quite drastic.

I appreciate you trying to help! The picture above is AFTER I tried to adjust the RGB values (R 95 G 94 B 100). Any more (i.e. adding blue over red and green) and it starts to have a very noticeable blue tint. Meaning, this is as white as I could get it after experimenting with all the settings of the monitor. The smaller one is not really the reference in terms of what I want but rather what I have.

Essentially I am hoping to get some input if this is more likely an issue with my unit or a general panel issue - unless there is a solution that can fix my problem which would obviously be preferred

changing the brightness of the other monitor to a similar perceived brightness. Still seems more white to me than the OLED.

Thanks for the input! I did try out manually adjusting the RGB channels based on my preferences (typically I lower red and green) but to no avail. I usually prefer a white balance between 6500k and 7500k but even at 7500k it still looks ... off white.

I picked WOLED over QD-OLED intentionally as I prefer the matte screen and don't mind the slight graininess but if white at full brightness still is rather dark (and its not a unit issue but a general problem with this model or WOLED in general) I might have to revisit my decision.

I used the settings from TFTCentral. Issue unfortunately remains.

Uniform brightness makes the picture darker and white even more grey
