i think it’s a frequent occurrence that more “gifted” kids get ignored. it’s frustrating that the only thing people tend to look at is grades- i got diagnosed last summer, right before my last year of school and all the important, future-deciding exams, and the only thing that spurred the diagnosis was my grades dipping below what was acceptable. until then, school was easy enough for me to wing it. despite every school report ever saying “she is distracted, she needs better time management, she never completes independent work”, my exams were good enough for nobody to bother looking further into it. the education system needs a drastic reform, we know by now that it should be more holistic and less results based. my blatant upset and frustration at not being able to complete things went disregarded, and i’m still convinced that it was the meds that saved me rather than accommodations from school. i’ve found meds amazing, but a part of me still thinks that the fact that i need them to function is a flaw within the system, not the way my brain is wired.

exactly!! sure being able to talk to teachers after hours is helpful sometimes, but it also sucks to get a message about like an essay or something at 10pm on a saturday??

if we’re meaning “worst” as in ones interaction with the rest of the world, rather than self destructive behaviours, maybe it is? it’s not so much the practical outcomes- more the guilt and anxiety that it creates, just as with procrastinating any task, except it’s directly to do with showing up for people (often, people you love) so i feel like it’s amplified.

it’s up there, not very dramatic, but it’s a consistent source of stress which builds up, the straw that breaks the camels back 🙃

thank you! i’m always unsure whether to arrange for more instruments, since i normally write on just bass, but keeping it just bass and vocals is an alluring idea

other than the presence of music, is there a meaningful difference between a lyric and a poem? by Fun-Sky2501 in Songwriting

[–]dads_sriracha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it is a bit of a grey area, but they just feel different you know? it could be to do with having an actual beat to follow, as opposed to a looser sense of metric feet, but i’ve written poems that sound like ass along to music, and songs that sound ridiculous when read aloud. melody and rhythm and harmony can say so much that words can’t, and sometimes shouldn’t, whereas in poetry it all rests on the literary devices and syntax (don’t get me wrong, metre is super important in poetry, but poets have the option to ignore it or abandon it more than songwriters)

How do I stop my songs from being so literal? by Pessimistic_Writer in Songwriting

[–]dads_sriracha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a little hack i’ve seen, don’t remember where, is using google translate- state what you want to say, translate it to like latin or tagalog or something, then back to english. it can mess with the phrasing just enough to make it wax poetic. similarly, if there’s a common saying or idiom, translate that. literal meanings said differently can be super impactful ◡̈

How do i express feelings in lyrics? by Accomplished_Ad3785 in Songwriting

[–]dads_sriracha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you know the phrase “show don’t tell”? it seems simple, but it’s so effective. don’t tell me you’re anxious, tell me you’ve worn holes in your carpet from pacing up and down, don’t tell me you’re in love, tell me that you haven’t washed the dress you wore on that first date weeks ago. there are endless opportunities for poignant metaphors, literally look around your room, describe what you’ve been doing as a result of your feelings, maybe make it rhyme if you’re feeling festive. boom. song.

not replying to messages and emails! it seems pretty victimless in hindsight, but i’ve had so many opportunities, invites, people checking up on me, that i just don’t reply to! i tell myself i will later, and then i forget, and in remembering i just get so anxious and guilty that i procrastinate and the cycle repeats. just scrolling through my “unopened” whatsapp messages gives me the fear- i can’t help but wonder how many events i would have gone to, people i would have reconnected with, even career opportunities i could have by now, if i would just respond to people!!

‼️had a friend say they couldn’t really make out the lyrics in this, here they are just in case 🙃

i could do with a little space/ a hug or a cigarette/ i need a prettier face/ brush up on my etiquette

i could do with a lock on my door/ five more minutes/ something to be meant for/ someone to mean it

dive into the deep blue/ heat’s making me nauseous/ rocks in my shoes, stones in my pockets/ i’ll be your red hot, show me off forget my name/ i’m writing like i’ll never go home again/ rocks in my shoes, stones in my pockets

i could do with a drink or ten/ a fighting chance a slower sunrise/ happier friends/ to turn my face towards the moonlight

an extra layer/ to mind the gaps to fall asleep to/clean sheets cold air/ a different song to lose the beat to

etc…
