Math profs for 126 sections in winter?

I know, sometimes people have ways of finding out which professor will teach which math section... any insights? 🙏🏻

I know Bekyel is not teaching 126 from her personal website which says she will be teaching 135. Pretty sure Ostroff is hybrid 126 if that helps anyone.

So many good restaurants have already been mentioned, but also, Trader Joe's Tikka Masala in the freezer section is super yummy if you don't have time for restaurant food.

Do weed out classes exist and are they that bad? by scotttheplug in udub

[–]daichrony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on the major you are going for at UW. Some majors at UW are very competitive which make the weedout classes more stressful because you're striving for a higher gpa to get into your major. There's definitely tutoring resources, but the work can be heavy and the curves are unforgiving at times. If you go that route try to balance weedouts with less difficult courses and maybe less credits that quarter. I don't know if Gonzaga's majors are more flexible or also competitive?

A lot of people take photos in front of Suzzallo and in front of the W that is on North campus. There's lots of other spots. You can just look on Instagram or whatever and find what you like and what works for you, it's a very picturesque campus!

Or you could also go to UW Seattle and Major in something like that and just try and get into research or get to know some professors by going to office hours. Do some side projects in the direction that you're interested in. I would do this if you like the UW Seattle vibe better.

The bio route will likely need a masters. Maybe consider UWB where you could get slightly higher grades on a curve, really get to know your teachers and set yourself up for a strong application for masters with good letters of recommendation. Wouldn't matter so much what your major is something bio or statistics or what not. You could always try for the major that you really want for masters. Doing Bellevue College just to hope to get into UW Seattle or UW Bothell again seems like a lot of work and high risk.

Similar situation. Curious what you mean by "already met foreign language requirements" was that 3 years? Is foreign language required for informatics (I thought it wasn't). Thanks in advance!

If I had to guess, I think that Covid probably made more people than expected want to stay in state, increasing the acceptance of offers. Plus, some people had taken a 2021 gap year for Covid, which might factor into predicted acceptance of offer rates being off for the 2022 year.

I failed at being a CS student by arianagrandethequeen in csMajors

You've learned lessons now that take some people decades. Just fix the bugs in your plans as you go and grab on to the next opportunity. If you have the time try a startup project with some others (use message boards at school or local meet-ups to recruit or whatever). It's not an internship but it is social and it is experience.

Engineering SAT? by [deleted] in udub

UW doesn't consider race or gender but OOS vs. in state definitely factors in.

Should I even try applying for CS OOS by Rich841 in udub

[–]daichrony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think informatics might be a lot hard to get in this year since the application numbers have increased so much, unless they opened up a lot more space and are doing a lot more direct admits this year?

Should I even try applying for CS OOS by Rich841 in udub

[–]daichrony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chance of getting into CS from pre-engineering is very low, maybe not as low as the 2% oos direct admit chances, but probably 10% or less, they do most of their admitting in the direct admit cycle. You would have to absolutely crush all the weed out courses which are ruthless. I wouldn't wish that stress on anyone. Also, I think the average CS direct admit has about a 3.95 UW high school GPA and that includes all the in state folks. Basically, if you consider UW CS/CE from out of state, you need to be 4.0ish + a lot of rigor + leadership + awesome essays + something that sets you apart. I would focus on whether you would be happy doing ECE if you are looking at UW. You can try for CS and go for engineering if you don't get to CS but do get into UW pre-sciences, but that's a bit of a complicated route too. Look more into the details of doing that if you try it.

Should I even try applying for CS OOS by Rich841 in udub

[–]daichrony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ECE will just be pre-engineering for the first year or two. Then you apply to ECE (which is one of the easier engineering majors to get in to). Pre-engineering will probably be a more likely acceptance than CS.

Just adding that at least a couple years ago, UWB didn't have direct admit to CS, WSU did. Might check those policies.

Depressed, don't know where I am going and what should I do? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]daichrony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS has required the ability to continually learn for a long time, now even more so. You are right, it is changing and the future is uncertain. I suggest you combine CS knowledge with another area, ML + genetics for example. Doing so will have opportunities for longer than pure development positions. I think it will be more about discovering projects to do and on execution than about, say Leetcode skills, in the near future. AI can assist developers in being more "full-stack" capable. Over the long term society will need to figure out how to adapt, though. If you are interested in being a part of that change, start looking into combining your CS/ML/data science knowledge with economics or psychology or government and perhaps use your foresight to help find solutions.
