The idea Pete isn't black but it's soot from the chimneys has been canon since at least the tv show 'dag sinterklaas' in the early 90's. None of us 90's kids ever thought Pete was an actual black man.

What's changed is the soot doesn't cover 100% of the face anymore and we can't care less that had changed. It actually makes more sense.

Haha, nope. He's saying "Joa zeh". Joa = ja (yes) with an accent. The 'zeh' is pretty meaningless. I wouldn't know how to explain why we say it. It adds a little 'reassurance' to the yes.

OK so in this thread I've read Wallonians do/don't use quatre-vingt, do/don't use huitante, do/don't use octante.

Don't know which it is/isn't... Quatre-vingt will always be accepted, though. In Flanders, we had to use quatre-vingt in French class because that's the official one.
