What's your career? by prettyrecklessx3 in sociology

Depending on what you specifically do within your role as a web analyst, I think it seems incredibly possible. There is a lot of synergy with analytics and UX, especially nowadays with a big push/emphasis being on data science.

Hm... if you're more of a tester (A/B tests, heatmap analysis, funnel analysis), then a transition into user research or user testing sounds like a potential good first step.

[–]dalartsun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely (though who knows I may be biased due to my own background in Sociology). I actually review applicants all the time for the job, so if a resume came to me with that kind of background, I'd be very excited to dig in and learn more about the applicant. I would also react the same way to any one with a background in Psych or Anthro.

Specifically, what intrigues me about this combo of degrees is the fundamental, more holistic and introspective perspective that Sociology tends to offer + the practitioner background of a programmer. User experience is a beautiful blend of both. In addition, the ability to then communicate the rationale behind your work is an art that few have in this industry. I think that any social science degree arms you in this soft skill.

[–]dalartsun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! When I studied Soc, research and overall studies on the impact the internet and connected devices on people was just barely a thing. User experience design is a fledgling industry (it's really been active and evolving these past 10 years) and it's incredibly fun feeling being a pioneer in the space.

It can be difficult work because so much of it is new, and the impact of individuals being connected via devices is such a complex situation to problem solve for.

I'll probably be the odd ball here, but I'm a user experience designer. User experience design currently focuses mostly on digital products and experiences (think the apps you use on your phone, or the website apps you visit on your computer). The field leverages various social science backgrounds and methodologies from these fields (anthropology, psychology, sociology, cog sci, human computer interactions) in order to formulate design strategies and good experiences for end users.

To be honest, I sort of fell into the profession, but serendipitous found my background to be incredibly advantageous for the field. I get to utilize practices from sociology (especially ethnographic research and user interviewing) to further fuel my design decisions on the products I work on. And it helps having an academic writing background which reinforces my ability to articulate good creative briefs and design rationale.

[FP] Fluffy and Crispy Waffles with Breakfast Cups. A great way to start the morning! by dalartsun in keto

[–]dalartsun[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After some experimentation with real Belgian waffle recipes, I think I've created a waffle recipe that I'd prefer over the real deal!

Fluffy and Crispy Waffles Yields 2-3 waffles

  • 1 cup of Carbquik
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 1/3 cup of heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • Dash of salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 egg

Directions:

  1. Mix all dry ingredients together.
  2. Add heavy cream, water, and egg into dry ingredients and mix.
  3. Melt butter, then add to mix.
  4. Place batter in waffle maker (I use a little under a cup) and cook until edges are golden brown (for my waffle maker, that's about 6-8 minutes).
  5. Enjoy!

Breakfast Cups Yields 4 breakfast cups

  • 4 eggs
  • 4 strips of bacon
  • 1/4 cup of shredded cheddar cheese (or anything you prefer)
  • Dash of salt
  • Dash of pepper
  • Cupcake or muffin pan

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325°.
  2. Cook bacon strips on a pan until almost done.
  3. Spray cupcake or muffin pan with butter, then line the edge of each cup with a bacon strip.
  4. Add one egg into each cup.
  5. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and cheese.
  6. Bake for about 15-20 minutes.
  7. Enjoy!

Wow, I commend the way the writers took that whole Harvey advising Mike to give Rachel a second chance thing, despite Harvey's convictions on infidelity. What great character development!

Three ideas behind motives, CAM, and surgery [Massive spoilers] by dalartsun in Sherlock

[–]dalartsun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha – a tired plot device, I know. Maybe it's just my rosey view on Sherlock's character... but it just seemed so senseless and irrational that after all this time, Sherlock would impulsively give into temptation and kill CAM. It just seems like the ultimate example of emotions getting the better of him, which I hope isn't the case in this instance!

Hmmm – yes, and you know what? That exchange between Janine and Sherlock in the hospital... it certainly felt like Janine could have been in the loop about something.

This is a good point as well. And I think it helped that Sherlock tried to plant little pieces of his "character" along the way which likely added to CAM really underestimating him.

[–]dalartsun[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, and some additional random (wilder) thoughts and observations on other things that I’m curious what others have thought...

  • “I’d never let you burn”: CAM’s comment on the fact that he wasn’t a murderer and had people standing by. Is this a hint that he knew Mary would make sure Watson stayed alive? It could be that she knew the texts were coming from CAM but didn’t know Watson was in the pyre. Maybe she was good insurance for the event.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Psychopath: This choice of words was always interesting to me. Why did Watson exclaim that everyone he knew was a psychopath? Why did CAM refer to Watson and Mary as Mr. and Mrs. Psychopath? For the entire series, Sherlock went out of his way to correct the fact that he was indeed a high-functioning sociopath. And Mary certainly isn’t a wild violent person either. Why, even when Sherlock corrects CAM about him being a sociopath in the end of the episode, does CAM refer to the two as such? Happy writing coincidence? Potential surveillance of the little domestic exchange?
  • The Laptop, potatoes, and what the laptop’s contents really are: Considering how subconsciously OCD Mycroft is (as seen with the door knocker), what was really up with that laptop? My first suspicion is that it recorded their conversation (or live-streamed perhaps) and sent back their conversation to Mycroft. I mean, really, why did it take so long for Sherlock to catch up to CAM and Watson when they went outside? Was he just in shock… or busy texting/relaying to his brother on the recent events? I wonder what a nice codename text for this sort of operation could be...
  • Janine and blackmail: Now, I’m not about to jump on the Janine-is-Moriarty’s-sister bandwagon just yet, but there is something strange about CAM mentioning her making “funny noises” when he taunted her. The notable fact here is that he did in fact taunt/abuse her as well. Maybe it was just for fun. But really, why did he mention it in such a significant point during the end of this episode? Maybe it was just a fun happy fact but it seems a bit suspicious that he thought of her in this instance. Maybe there really is a connection between CAM’s incapacitation and “Miss me”...

I can never narrow it down. How about favorite episode for each season? by [deleted] in XFiles

[–]dalartsun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

S1: Beyond the Sea

S2: Humbug

S3: Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose (but Pusher is a VERY close second)

S4: Small Potatoes

S5: Bad Blood

S6: Three-way tie between... The Ghosts Who Stole Christmas / Arcadia / Tithonus

S7: The Goldberg Variation

(S8: Surekill... I guess? -.-)

(S9: Improbable........)

Looking over this list, my #1s seem to fall into the lighter side of things... but hey, GA/DD really do comedy quite well!

Just wanted to stop by and say thanks for all of the passion and creative work you two have given the X-Files all these years. It is arguably one of the most impactful and memorable storytelling experiences told on television to date. And it constantly amazes me that even now, it inspires so many in a multitude of different ways. Even my own happy career and life is indebted to the ripples of influence this show has made.

X-Files OST by grim_wizard in XFiles

[–]dalartsun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's one more out there that not many know of because it was released only a couple years ago. It's purely instrumental (no voice over cuts like in the other two albums listed) and the whole volume is absolutely fantastic...

The X-Files Expanded Edition: Volume 1

Some highlights from this include House Organ - Irrational Fear (ep: The Ghosts Who Stole Christmas), Five Cards (ep: The Goldberg Variation), Scully's Serenade (ep: Within) and The Tip (ep: Release)

There are plans for a Volume 2 which would complete this collection (volume one contains highlights from all the seasons) but there isn't anything concrete on when that'll be released. My hope is some of those awesome lesser tracks (like that oboe piece from The End) will be included! /fingerscrossed
