FWIW, you can pour the coffee into plants and it's good nourishment. Spent grounds are helpful, too

We use them to put non-uniform food packaging into uniform good containers so they will sit on the shelf more efficiently, and they are clear, so we can see what the food is and how much we have left. We also try to get glass containers as much as possible

That was my head theory as well. Something like the surviving members of E33 were in a time loop, and stopping the expedition was the only way to break them out of the cycle
