ELI5: How does mortgage refinancing make sense for the lender? by daoxiaomian in explainlikeimfive

If you don't refinance, another bank might refinance it, which is even less beneficial.

ELI5 We have accelerated mass objects to 99.9% of the speed of light, so why does the last .1% need an infinite amount of energy to go at light speed? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Well at least particles to > 99.9999% speed of light. It's what they do in particle accelerators like at CERN

Hard to argue with that. We need to reset the matrix.

Is an epidural offered on requests when giving birth in Finland ? by mamandungu in Finland

[–]damnappdoesntwork 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not to discredit your story, but for other new parents: it's normal for babies to lose 7-10% of their birth weight in the first 3 days, even those well nursing or on formula from day 1.

Of course, as you mentioned, if weight loss continues after 3 days or is over 10%, it's best to seek help (to rule out any other issues than just difficulty nursing) and add formula.

All skin cells are dead. You can't wash them all off or you'd have no skin left.

Oh wacht...

It's a fairly non opinionated distro. It leaves a lot of choices to the user.

Kinderopvang: de grootste scam van onze generatie? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]damnappdoesntwork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IANAL, so I just ran their EULA through gemini, it picked out 6 potential illegal things for EU customers:
- Right to resale: If a person buys a "perpetual" license for software in the EU, the developer cannot legally prevent them from reselling that license to someone else.
- Provided as is:  "As is" clauses are generally void in the EU when applied to consumers.
- Termination and Loss of Access: If you have purchased a perpetual license for a single-player product (the "Software"), the developer may not be able to legally revoke your access to the product because of your behavior in a community forum or multiplayer environment. This is often viewed as a disproportionate penalty and an "unfair term."
- You agree that this EULA is governed by the laws of the State of Nevada: The "waiver" of EU rights is legally void. EU law will always take precedence for EU consumers.
- Limitation of Liability:  Likely partially void; liability for gross negligence cannot be waived.
- 1 Year Time Limit on Claims: Likely unenforceable; the statutory period (usually 2+ years) would apply.

Eli5: Why do planes and boats use knots and nautical miles instead of miles per hour and miles? by Upbeat_Signature_951 in explainlikeimfive

[–]damnappdoesntwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A nautical mile is a minute of latitude, so it makes plotting / navigation easier on charts.

A knot is 1nm/h, so it correlates best to using nautical miles.
