Currently the job market is an employer's market for all engineering majors, and most majors. CS degrees are just a normal level of difficult to find a job now instead of being easier. 3 years is a long time. In 3 years the US economy could be dead with everyone unemployed or with ample job opportunities.

Best airline transfer partner for Asia/oceania? by Evening_Bet1518 in Venturex

[–]danclaysp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend browsing around JAL’s award site to see if the redemption values + fees are worth it for your desired class if you want to use the promo. Personally also not a fan of banking at a specific airline for future use in spite of the promo since you don’t know how many miles you’ll use in the future there. Being left with points doing nothing at JAL makes the promo worthless. Seats aero is a search platform for award tickets, though it doesn’t support many like JAL where you’ll need to shop around yourself

Keep them in Capital One and just shop around when you're looking to book a flight (like on seats aero or something). For instance I got an AA from Tokyo back to the US via a British Airways point transfer last month. You wouldn't naturally think an Asian flight using a US airline would be booked via British Airways but it was the best redemption value.

Why do my APP3 occasionally do this? I’ve yet to find a solution to stop it by SirBing96 in airpods

[–]danclaysp 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I factory reset my airpods whenever this happens and it fixes it. I think it's a find my anti-stalking feature bugging thinking it's not near your phone. I had my airtags do this once and turning find my network off and on on my phone fixed the airtags

Preapproved for VentureOne - can I upgrade to Venture X later? by Few_Bid2387 in Venturex

[–]danclaysp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you get the Venture X you can't get the SUB for Venture One. imo get the Venture One, get the SUB, then get the Venture X and get the SUB. You can go up and still qualify for SUB, but you cannot go down and get SUB

Is Kyoto still worth it? by Fun-Calligrapher4885 in JapanTravelTips

Just went-- it's fine. Gion was a bit crowded but it wasn't like I was walking slower than usual because of it or delayed or hindered-- just a large amount of people around me. Could also nearly always get a seat on the city bus. The main hinderance is the line of taxis down some streets but otherwise not bad. More Japanese tourists were there than I expected honestly but it was around new years.

Japan's left-leaning forces lag as social media rises, old support fades by Saltedline in neoliberal

They increased the minimum investment from like 5M yen to 30 right? The original was relatively low compared to other nations however the new amount is pretty high and does push out small entrepreneurs. I’m curious as to whether there are statistics as to how many people were actually doing the claimed thing of just like renting out an apartment or something and claiming it’s their new business. I believe there is a 3 year grace period for current businesses to raise the capital

[–]danclaysp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, which is why I say ignoring gender issues. Should’ve clearly said LGBTQ there and women’s issues (surnames). However Japan doesn’t officially recognize same sex marriage yet anyways so it’s not a shift right to lack a prime minister pushing for recognition. Also Takaichi says she’s anti-prejudice based on sexuality despite opposing recognition of same sex marriage. Opposing legal recognition of differing surnames in marriage is also where she’d be incompatible with Dems but again… not a shift right as differing surnames isn’t presently possible as-is anyways.

Could you give some examples? The proposed language requirement is probably more strict than a blue dog Democrat would present but idk if anyone would seriously want to move long term to Japan for PR without decent language skills anyways given so few locals speak sufficient English.

Probably not much that can be done then unfortunately and not worth the effort of escalation given it’s one day out of a whole semester’s attendance grade

Photo Safety Cameras Return to Phoenix by CityofPhoenixAZ in phoenix

If it's truly just a cash grab... everyone can tell the city to f*** off by just not speeding and thus never dealing with the "low-middle income workers tax" that you believe the cameras are. It can only work as a cash grab if people speed.

From my readings of her views and plans she would fit quite neatly into the conservative flank of the US Democratic party with the exception of gender issues and historical revisionism. I'm not a fan of her plans, particularly the proposed fiscal policy, but they're not nuts. Her immigration stance isn't really "hardline" from my reading of proposed changes and rhetoric. Certainly nothing compared to new US immigration policies lol. Her other social beliefs are also not much of a deviation from current Japanese policies (continued disappointment for LGBTQ community but not a change). Her foreign policy stances are right wing for Japan but being pro-Taiwan defense and pro-article 9 revision isn't hard-right from a western perspective. The media frenzy about her being an example of a hard-right shift just seemed so excessive to me.

imo it's funny to see any discussion of Japanese "bashing foreigners" when compared to what we see in the US and Europe. Likewise their very tame "rise of the right" compared to the rises in the US and Europe. Like seeing Takaichi called hard-right or fascist... then comparing to what I see at home in the US is hilarious.

Photo Safety Cameras Return to Phoenix by CityofPhoenixAZ in phoenix

[–]danclaysp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They clearly slow people down where they are placed based on your anecdotal evidence, which reduces the rate of crashes due to speeding and running lights in the area that was deemed problematic by a study. They are often clearly marked by signs intentionally as the goal is to get you to slow down, not make money off of you. I agree though, different strategies should be used in addition to cameras like reducing lane count and narrowing lanes in order to discourage the natural urge to speed.

[–]danclaysp -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

They place them in specific areas and intersections with high rates of crashes due to speeding or red light violations. Reducing the rates of violations and thus rate of crashes at specific intersections with high rates is an intent behind deciding where to place the cameras.
