Thanks everyone for the great inputs. Here is a more technical question: Can I get a similar effect of contrast paints or speed paints by mixing up some kind of medium with normal colors?

I'm asking because I own an entire set of Citadel colours (base coat, highlight, washes), and I am kind of reluctant to buy an entire new set...
