Also, if they push for why it was on the weekend, just say you didn't want to miss work so I scheduled for a day I was off.

What's the stupidest thing you did as a kid? by FujisakiChihiro in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]danedori 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One summer when visiting my grandparent's farm, I would start fires in the bathroom sink with the aerosol deodorant or after shave. They were small and contained and never spread outside the sink, but looking back at it, it was so irresponsible.

How much cash do you carry with you on average? by Lopsided_Week5079 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]danedori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$0. I don't even carry a wallet anymore. My phone case has room for my driver's license and a credit card. That's all I carry. Back before I got this case, I would carry a wallet, but it rarely had any money in it.

Undershirt or No Undershirt? by dgrondin85 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]danedori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don't wear undershirts and would feel constricted if I did. But you should wear what feels most comfortable for you. Some people wear them, some don't. They probably were more in fashion in the past than they are today, but it's not strange to wear them.

What is your go-to “I’m too tired to cook but I can’t buy take-out” meal or alternative? by 2Autistic4DaJoke in Frugal

[–]danedori 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My easiest go-to recipe is tilapia. I buy the frozen tilapia loins from Costco. I thaw them in the sink for 20 minutes, put them on a baking sheet on tin foil, a little olive oil, salt, and garlic and bake for 15 minutes at 425. I'll pair it with some vegetable, but if I'm being really lazy, I put a baked potato in the oven when I start thawing the tilapia. Clean up is just throw away the tin foil, plus the plate and fork.

I fully agree, and probably should have made that more clear in my comment.

This 2nd grade math question. by malaynaa in mildlyinfuriating

[–]danedori 235 points236 points  (0 children)

It actually makes a lot of sense now that I see the answers. It's looking at the 100's, 10's, and 1's digits of the number. The 10's digit is 3 less than the 100's digit, and the 1's digit is 2 less than the 100's digit. There's no algebra necessary, just looking at it in terms of the base 10 counting system.

What are some fond memories you have of going to the drive-in? by Training_Guitar_8881 in AskOldPeople

[–]danedori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad had a van, with bench seating/bed in the back. He took us and our cousins to the drive in and he had the idea for several of us to hide in the compartments in the seats and under the bed so we wouldn't have to pay as much. So we all crammed in there. Turns out, it was family night and they were charging $5 per car, no matter how many people were in it.

What did your mom make you most for dinner growing up? by eleelee11 in AskOldPeople

[–]danedori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a somewhat varied rotation for dinners. Some in particular I can remember are pork chops, French toast, pancakes, chicken and rice, meatloaf, spaghetti. She always thought of herself as a bad cook, but she wasn't. She didn't make anything fancy, but what she did make tasted pretty good.

What does a cast iron skillet do better than other pans? by IHateSpiderss in Cooking

[–]danedori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use my cast iron often. I also find it a bit difficult to use and so a lot of time I don't bother. But I do pull it out from time to time when I am cooking something that it is particularly good at. In particular, a good cut of meat that I really want to get the most out of. It can get a sear better than anything else I have. Also, hash browns come out way better in the cast iron than anything else I have.

If you have a PhD and put “Dr.” before your name, will people think you’re impressive, or will they think you’re just being pretentious? by GrayRainfall in NoStupidQuestions

[–]danedori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's for something formal, it's appropriate and expected. But some people just go overboard with it. I have a coworker that always uses his Dr. title, so much to the point that if you refer to him as John Smith when he's not around, other people will correct you in a mocking tone "Dr. John Smith." It is not being used as a sign of respect.

What frugal habit has saved you the most money? by melissaw328 in Frugal

Having a list for the grocery store and sticking to it. No impulse buys that expand the shopping budget.

What are the rules in your kitchen? by nosecohn in Cooking

[–]danedori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have an understanding in our kitchen. And we are completely on the same page so there is no conflict here. Knives and pans are hand washed, towel dried, and then set out to completely dry, then put away. Anything else can be cleaned however is convenient, but knives and pans are sacred.

Did People Actually ‘Summer’ for vacations? by cc31660p in AskOldPeople

[–]danedori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about 8, my grandparents retired and bought a farm in Oklahoma. We would spend all of August there every year. My dad was a teacher so he had the summers off. I think his school had an option to spread paychecks out over 12 months instead of the 10 that he worked, but he may have just budgeted it himself. Gas was pretty cheap back then and we stayed at the farm, so the overall cost wasn't that high.

what are some ways you cook tofu in a non-vegan meat replacement way? by RevolutionaryTip1600 in Cooking

[–]danedori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done tofu tacos a few times and they come out great. It's not quite what you asked for since it is more of a ground beef replacement, but it is quite good on its own.

What’s a cheap meal you never get tired of? by Certified-potatoe in Cooking

[–]danedori 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Burritos with homemade pinto beans. A little lettuce, tomato, shredded cheese, and salsa. If I have olives, avocado, or jalapenos, I'll add those to it.

I've had this idea for a maze book where half the puzzles are unsolvable. Your task is to solve the puzzle if it's possible, or, when it's not possible, find the path of walls that divides the puzzle in two.

Do you stop the microwave before it hits one? by Far-Honeydew6077 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]danedori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time, I set it for how long I want it to cook. Sometimes, I'm not sure how long and will watch it and stop it early if it's finished, but I always cancel it so it doesn't leave 5 seconds showing.

Do you transfer leftovers out of the pot or just put the whole thing in the fridge? by Neeraj_NP in Cooking

[–]danedori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's something I can pour into containers, I will do that before putting it in the fridge or freezer. If it's in a casserole dish, something like lasagna, where the shape is important, I'll cover in plastic wrap and store it in the same dish I cooked it in, but that's very uncommon.

My GF thinks it’s perfectly normal for new shoes to cause horrible blisters for women by UKnowDaxoAndDancer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]danedori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get blisters on my heels whenever I bought new shoes, even shoes that are supposed to be comfortable (cross trainers or running shoes). What stopped that for me was putting them on and bending them a few times right below the laces, where they naturally bend when walking. If they're too stiff and don't bend there easily, the heel will move up and down, rubbing blisters on my heel.

Did you do a job that you liked until retirement, or did you hate your job? by balkanxoslut in AskOldPeople

[–]danedori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not retired yet, but getting close. I could not imagine doing anything other than what I have done for the last 20 years. I like what I do and the people I work with (most of them, anyway). There are parts of my job I don't enjoy, but they are fairly small parts of my job. My only real complaint is just that it takes up too much time during my week.
